'Grecian' style evening dress for a really posh do - not black - any ideas?

designerbaby · 09/05/2012 20:43

I need anew dress for another of DHs 'do's'. We're generally the youngest there by 10 years or so (and we're not young!). The older women we all be in ballgowny type things, which I WILL NOT entertain.

I have the idea of something Grecian-y. Minimal, drapey, relatively bling-free...

Anyone seen such a thing?

Pleeeeeeeaaase?

I thank you in advance...

P.s I'm 5ft2", size 10, slim but curvy, if that helps. Of course it may lead you all to tell me that I've lost my mind even considering the above and it will look TERRIBLE...

This is the one I was thinking of- I haven't clicked all the links here, so apologies if I am repeating someone. I got this one on eBay for fifty quid for dd1's prom. It's very Grecian, and a gorgeous colour.

Really like the LeBOF one. Not very Grecian, but how about this one ? It's on at a good reduction too.

LeBOF · 09/05/2012 23:33

Ha! We need one with double the impact Grin

MrsLettuce · 09/05/2012 23:35

The coral TH one is beautiful. I think I'm in love with this one though

MoonlightandRoses · 09/05/2012 23:39

LeBOF, my eyes! Drinks more Wine to get over the shock.

MrsL, yes, it is stunning in a simple way (and so is the price Smile).

Sleepwhenidie · 09/05/2012 23:40

French connection too daytime and too navy (as in almost black)

Ted Baker blue pleats very nice, worth trying but I suspect only really works if you are teeny tiny...

Would you go shorter length, if so how about this Halston bargain?

MoonlightandRoses · 09/05/2012 23:40

Oops. my comment to LB should have had brackets around the "Drinks more..." statement - that's what shock does you know, knocks out any sense of grammar...

NovackNGood · 09/05/2012 23:45

Grecian Implies tall and lithe. If you are not tall and lithe best avoid and maybe pick something more suitable.

designerbaby · 10/05/2012 00:08

Dammit... The purple grecian leBOF one is out of stock.
I really like your blue one though moonlight... Good price too...

MrsLettuce I am cursing you. I clicked your link and thought Yes! Yes! That's the one!

And then I looked at the price... Gah!

So if someone can please find me a dress EXACTLY like that, please, for under £150 I will love you forever.

Novack, I am small and if not lithe, certainly lither than I was a few months ago. I'm prepared to give it a whirl... So shoot me!

I want a lovely fabric, and minimal, really. And long, probably... having worn short for ages.

Try eBay- as I say, I got it in a size 8-10 for fifty quid on eBay. It didn't use the name of the dress in the listing though. If your event is after June 28th (I think), I am happy to send you this to see if it fits, for thirty quid if that appeals?

designerbaby · 10/05/2012 00:16

Bless you leBOF... But event is next Friday! I'm a last minute larry, always...
I will check out Ebay though, good plan

I've PMed you Smile

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2012 00:26

Sorry, I'd stared at it lovingly seen it before and it was so obviously what you meant...

maybe

almost, a bit With cream / rose sash??

pink, not strictly grecian

( WTF )

MoonlightandRoses · 10/05/2012 00:31

Ok, there is one other way to get a Grecian dress - how are you with a needle and thread?

Reason I ask is that it took me only about three hours to turn a v.basic, fitted strapless prom type dress into a Grecian style gown for a ball once (and yes, it got lots of compliments and no, I am not renowned for my sewing skills).

Basically, find a strapless, side closing, cheapo short prom dress, go to a decent fabric shop, find the material you want, and ask them to cut you enough to make a full length gown with some over.
Take material home, drape over self toga style,
have DH safety pin where you say, adjust until happy (this took the longest...),
take off , use running stitch to sew the material onto the base, with occasional extra stitches in the drape to hold the folds where you want them
leave gap to one side to save sewing a zip in,
get into dress on the day, do final stitches to sew self in.
It will be a looser pleat than those on the links, but it really does work.

BHS Shock

The colour is maybe a bit much. I forget what these dresses are actually called but they are simple to make...

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2012 00:45

Ah. Infinity dress. Here in lovely fabric (and over budget). Sure a dressmaker could make you one in budget.

MoonlightandRoses · 10/05/2012 00:58

Ok, I know it is a maternity site, but it claims this dress works for non maternity too - similar to the one MrsL linked to, but quite a bit cheaper.

lashingsofbingeinghere · 10/05/2012 05:19

this or too casual?

this available in different lengths. The mink colour looks gorgeous.

Have you looked at phase eight's dresses? They have quite a few styles and colours that may pass as Grecian, and most are within your price range.

I looked at that too - lovely! Certainly not bridal and bridal only but it is more than double the budget. Less the half the price of 'my' dress though Wink

What about this?
