I have no clothes

Ok I do really, I'm not sat here naked but I do seem to have fallen into the pit of frump

So I have a few hundred pounds to get myself a basic wardrobe. Not much to some, loads to others (including me)

So will you help me? What do I need for a basic mix and match wardrobe?

Yes it's helpful. I think reiss and whistles websites give model height and the size worn too.

mysteryfairy · 09/05/2012 18:56

I've just looked up all your items. I think the cheap Monday top looks fab and a a great shape. The green skirt is really lovely. The Vila tunics look very promising as tops and good price. Both other items from asos are lovely but I am more dubious about them fitting as knitted tunic looks like an inverted triangle shape and motel top looks very wide. I have just disposed of similar motel garment in an 8 for being unflatteringly broad. Hope they do fit okay though as they are lovely.

I can see you have tried to build up a good stock of basics from littlewoods and understand why you have done that given your wardrobe situation. Please don't take this the wrong way but some of it is straying a bit into mumsy. You are only 31 and even though you are self conscious about your hips you really have a figure lots of people would be envious of. If the Asos stuff doesn't work out for whatever reason you are not leaving yourself with much young or funky. If some stuff is going back I hope you might be a bit more adventurous! I would send the boyfriend tunics back - if sleeves are dubious no way should you keep 3. Also send the leggings back and invest in one pair that is better quality or more jeggings. Thin on bum leggings is a terrible look on anyone after all regardless of posterior size.

I think the LTS dress looks like a bit of a find. Potentially fab shape and if it is properly long will look stunning on you. Not sure why they called the shade prune - hardly aspirational!

bronze · 09/05/2012 19:48

I been mulling over sending the tunics back. Tempted to keep the green and now conviced to send them back. Oddly the green felt slightly different sized anyway, I even checked they had sent the size I had ordered
I have found myself drawn to bright stuff on the page so its just finding it in the right shape. For instance I have this and adore it
Leggings are going back too but I did order an extra pair of the dp jeggings (different colour) so lets hope they all fit.
Think the green dress is going back as well. It's too short to go without and looks a bit odd over stuff.
You're right I need to be more adventurous. Was talking to my best mate from when I was growing up (Those teenage years Smile) and realised how much I miss being that fun slightly quirky person I used to be.
So need more clothes Grin more shopping... especially summer stuff

And thank you. I think I would have just given up without the encouragement

The other thing is I see stuff that I like the look of that makes other people freak. I was told only yesterday to only go for plain maxis yet I found this Blush

I actually have this skirt in the pattern which actually looks great in reality imo (admit it looks crap in that pic

Its getting that balance right. Dont want to be mumsy but need to realise what I can actually carry off these days

OP posts:

actually

Your scarf is gorgeous, really lovely. I'm most jealous.

You haven't admitted to buying any shoes - have you ordered any? I'm picturing the maxi dress would look good with the flip flops you mentioned but you might need something to dress it up with a bit if you wear it to anything like a bbq (I know such a thing seems unimaginable in current deluges!) Plus a pair of conversy type things if you are down to boots and flip flops as first very unseasonable and second very cold. That could see you through summer at least.

Btw there is quite a lot of long knitwear on cos. Cant work put how to link from iPad but there is a draped linen cardigan which i think looks as if it would be quite drapey on hips - in grey or black. Also a long sheer cardigan in taupe or black. They both look as if they would give you a leaner silhouette than the littlewood cardigans, would be fab with jeggings and taupe one would go well with the Boden top. Might run the risk of being too muted but you have the scarf to instantly lift any outfit.

bloody hell it shows it at 129 quid, I paid a tenner Grin

I have never heard of Cos so will go and have a look.

The website is cosstores.com

lashingsofbingeinghere · 10/05/2012 05:43

At the risk of derailing the excellent suggestions already made, have you thought about making a date with a personal shopper at a department store? If you set aside a morning, you could be in an out in a few hours, knowing everything fitted/matched/worked together. Just a thought.

bronze · 10/05/2012 12:38

Not easy to do Lashings, I don't drive, live 25 miles from the nearest city and always have a small person in tow

The Asos lot arrived
the skirt is gorgeous but huge on me. UI guess its because its by waist rather than hips. Wil need to go down to a 12 or maybe a 10 will get a tape measure out

I didnt get the free people tunic dress in the end

Motel Veronica Panelled Tunic Dress is lovely, maybe slightly big but I'm not going to take the risk of a smaller size

Vila Jersey Short Sleeve Tunic Dress to be worn as tops it tiny I know its designed to be fitted but need a bigger size maybe two up. It feels great though

Cheap Monday Striped Long Sleeved Tunic, like the panelled one maybe slightly big and need to decide whether to try another size

Apart from the sizing though that was good batch

Something I've started doing over the last few years is only buying things if I absolutely love them. I don't have many clothes but what I do have I really like and they fit properly. I just got to the point of being sick of looking at a wardrobe full of what I thought would be 'useful' basics that I never ever wore. I've packed them all away and haven't missed them. My staples now are jeans (levi's demi curve) and long line tunics like the mudd and water one or stripy tops from cos.

bronze · 11/05/2012 15:56

Well the dorothy perkins stuff has arrived.
I feel a bit selfconcious in the jeggings but I got ds to take a picture and I don't think I look that bad at all
I've added them to my profile so you can tell me what you think. The green top is the littlewoods tunic.
Am I destined to only wear these with my kneehighs (theyre actually longer than most long stuff and reach my heel) I think I'm keeping them though unless you say ugh.

OP posts:
bronze · 11/05/2012 16:06

I can't even get the jeans over my thighs let alone do them up

OP posts:
mysteryfairy · 11/05/2012 16:33

The jeggings look great on you. I don't see why you would need to wear them with knee high boots - you have good legs. I'm wearing mine with ash trainers right this second and it's so nice that the jeggings actually cover the top of the trainers. They are properly long enough with ballet pumps too. I think you should keep them - I can't see any "width" issue in that photo at all.

The green tunic looks good with them, love the colour.

Funny about the jeans though, especially if you bought the same size - are you going to size up?

bronze · 11/05/2012 16:47

No I'm going to send them back and blue jeggings, will keep the grey i think. I have decided to only stick with really good stuff and will take my time buying more bits.
I am also going to get ds to take all photos of me because I never normally look that narrow. I have a horrendous picture from last April which I how I picture myself.

I need to look at shoes now
Smile

Good move bronze (although you look lovely in the picture).

What Brandnewbrighttomorrow said makes sense -- better to feel you look great in you clothes than to have lots of OK outfits.

bronze · 16/05/2012 17:32

The Boden ones don't fit. A different size wouldn't work either. Shame cos the patterned one was really me. Shout if you come across anything else that would work . Much appreciated
