Ok I do really, I'm not sat here naked but I do seem to have fallen into the pit of frump

So I have a few hundred pounds to get myself a basic wardrobe. Not much to some, loads to others (including me)

So will you help me? What do I need for a basic mix and match wardrobe?

Chubfuddler · 07/05/2012 21:32

What did you buy? I will shamelessly steal when I get paid!

bronze · 07/05/2012 22:45

Sorry been on phone
so far the black and cement jeggings from dps and the indigo bootcut jeans

I'm struggling with tops
I want longer but need to pick ones which wont struggle with my width

OP posts:
bronze · 07/05/2012 22:46

Also knowing which basics are long. I've bought too many times in the past then discovered theyre not as long as they look because the photo must have been a 6

Try mudd and water tunics. The shape is fantastic, fitted on the shoulders and over the bust but floats past all the bumps below and lovely and long length too. 3/4 length sleeves. I have one and it's one of my absolute favourites for day-to-day. In fact I'm just off to see how dire my bank balance is and see if I can stretch to a new one Grin

Brandnewbrighttomorrow · 07/05/2012 23:11

To clarify, it's the where love lives tunic I like.

bronze · 07/05/2012 23:15

I'm so shit at this
I think I'm so tuned out to shopping I just don't know how any more

Will have a look at them thanks, it's tops I really need now as have gone for the dp bottoms up thread

OP posts:
bronze · 07/05/2012 23:44

bronze · 08/05/2012 09:56

I really am crap. I didn't actually even order the stuff I decided on

Next thing is a swimming costume... any ideas?

People really go shopping as a hobby?

Would you consider wearing a bikini. I buy from Freya or similar - that way I can get a top with a 30 inch back and medium bottoms to accommodate my hips. Admittedly I don't ever go swimming at the local leisure centre and do mostly favour villa with pool and only my indifferent family looking on!

Sad you didn't buy anything though. If you are like me you probably look a lot more pear shaped to yourself than anyone else. I dragged a friend I've had since I was 11 into a changing room recently to look at the fit of some jeans. She was shocked by how broad my hips are in comparison to the rest of me but at that point I had successfully hidden it from her for 28 years!

mysteryfairy · 08/05/2012 13:05

Btw I think you should just order tons and return what doesn't work. Even if it costs a few quid it's only like car parking, coffee, lunch etc if you go to bricks and mortar shops for the day.

bronze · 08/05/2012 13:25

I have spent the whole morning looking at will be placing orders soon Grin don't worry. Going to over buy because some stuff will have to be sent back
oh just read you second post great minds

girlgonemild · 08/05/2012 14:28

I would love to do a wardrobe revamp! Quite envious.

This link might help. If you enter your measurements it shows you which shops will suit your shape best. sizes.darkgreener.com/

bronze · 08/05/2012 14:42

oh thank you, yes
the differences are mad at zara I could be 10 18
yet at other places I could be 14 14
useful to know though

I haven't had any new clothes to speak of in the last ten years. Its becoming necessary now because things are falling apart and comes at a good time because we have had a little windfall.

OP posts:
mysteryfairy · 08/05/2012 14:46

Would you consider wide linen trousers for summer? I know they are a bit derided and mumsy but they are good for masking hips and you can wear with a very fitted top to emphasise your slim top half. To make matters even worse On the mumsy front i I buy them from Next so I can get xl.

I'm not madly keen on leggings with sandals because I only agree with black leggings and think they look a bit harsh with sandals. This is a personal prejudice with no rational basis though!

Fulhamup · 08/05/2012 14:52

As you are tall, you should try Long Tall Sally. Good website and jeans and trousers that actually fit, not too hipster or too short so that you don't look as if you're waiting for the flood. Some of it can be frumpy but generally it's good value for money.

forevergreek · 08/05/2012 14:57

Can I come and recommend a dress.

Casual dress/ long tunic , with leggings/ tights in winter and pair off boots are my staple.

Don't have to worry about matching top and bottom. Can wear alone in summer with flats, add leggings/ cardigan etc in winter with boots. so you really do get your money's worth.

Have a look around or online for the best recommended type of dress for your shape and go from there.

As long as they aren't tight then you are fine sitting down playing with kids/ at classes without revealing anything.

forevergreek · 08/05/2012 15:01

Oh and yes to leggings and sandals but not black ones. So beige/ light grey/ light blue/ white you can get away with

HipHopOpotomus · 08/05/2012 15:24

OP have you seen Desigual? Lots of colour, pattern, embroidery .....

bronze · 09/05/2012 10:54

Well the first lot arrived
Littlewoods
The cardis I got in three colours fit
The tunics are baggy round the waist and tight over the hips. The sleeves are also those ones that look like they should be folded but they are only just long enough without folding. Unsure
I like the single cardi but it's too small will need a 14
The green dress on the other hand is huge and I need a 10 or because it's so loose around the hips maybe even an eight. Unsure if I bother changing them or just send them back
The linen trousers fit quite well there were a little loose around the waist but also have a draw tie which as long as I cover the top will do I may even get some more in another colour.
The leggings are quite see through, I have tights that are thicker I'm not sure as none of the tops are long enough to completely cover up my arse.

Hiphop
Gorgeous gorgeous designs just not sure that any would fit they look short on the model.

OP posts:
bronze · 09/05/2012 10:57

Forevergreek would love more dresses but unless I go somewhere specific like longtallSally I'm finding it very hard to find dresses that are the right length most are designed to become below the knee but come above my knees

Chubfuddler · 09/05/2012 10:58

I bought some lovely skinny yellow jeans in sainsburys yesterday, £18. 14L fit me a treat and they're quite high rise so no muffin top.

That green Asos skirt is gorgeous I am so buying that. The model is five ten so should be fine length wise (it annoys me so much when catalogue models are clearly so short).

bronze · 09/05/2012 11:00

I always wonder if they make longer versions of the clothes anyway for models catalogues
I just found out about the model height thing on asos yesterday they will definitely get more of my business from now on

OP posts:
bronze · 09/05/2012 11:02

The thing is I know lots of people who are around my height must be my hip waist rations that makes it so much more difficult for me
