How do you chose nail polish colours? I have quite a few that are lovely colours but find they don't suit me at all.

I am getting fed up of the waste.

What skin tone do you have? Because some colous make some people have red looking hands which is unflattering. Im not too bothered lol I just choose the colours I love but it is much better when they compliment your skin tone. What sort of colours do you have already?

EllenParsons · 05/05/2012 00:46

I don't really think about it and just buy any colours I like! I do find I tend to get a lot of similar ones though. Seem to have loads of purples.

echt · 05/05/2012 06:32

I'd like to join this one. My hands are yellow (thanks, Dad) to the point where a doctor will say "Are they always like that?"

Any colour suggestions. I'm keen, as I've just got my nails to decent length.

JustFab · 05/05/2012 07:28

I have lots of pinks from very pale to dark. I also have weird colours like dark blue, brown, crackle, sparkle, etc. I am white with quite pale hands. I am currently wearing a pink from Asda and with 3 coats of it on it looks pretty.

It helps to know what your colouring is. I am a winter (dark hair, pale but blue based skin tone) and wear red, dark pink, black, burgundy and grey etc.

I find that dark colours look best on short nails so I keep mine quite short and neat.

lumbago · 05/05/2012 08:32

Go with the same tones that suit you in clothes. Eg of you find softer colors suit you generally match that.

SpagboLagain · 05/05/2012 08:39

I had my colours done. As a paintbox Spring I tend to go for bright corals, flamingo pinks and true reds.

Whatever colours look good next to your face should also work in your nails, so what tops really make you glow?

What is your natural hair colour, is it warm or cool?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 05/05/2012 08:58

I follow what suits me in clothes too, that way it all tones together as well. I'm not sure what sort of season I am but I have dark brown hair and pale but brown toned skin and I avoid yellow tones (lime, orange, yellow, coral) as I do in clothes. I gravitate towards pinks, purples, blues, turquoise type greens, taupe but can also wear bright red so long as it isn't orangey. I agree about keeping the nails really short for deep/bright colours.

My main frustration with nail polishes is when they look really fabulous in the bottle but are translucent on, I like solid colour, not being able to see the whites of my nails through it, that's the main cause of me throwing them away.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 05/05/2012 09:00

Yes you need to get your colours done. House of Colour - you'll then be able to wear the right cour clothes as well.
Makes everything so much easier.

JustFab · 05/05/2012 09:01

I am pretty unattractive so not sure any colours make me glow. I have a lot of coloured tops but tend to wear more black than anything. My natural hair colour was light blonde as a child, mousey as a teenager and is now coloured and a kind of dark blonde. I really want to be a rich brunette but worried it will make me look more washed out.

Never wear pearlescent. Is domain of old ladies.

Scootergrrrl · 05/05/2012 09:02

I bought a lovely lilac/pale purple nail varnish for my toes after seeing it look fab on my friend and my feer now look they they belong to a dead person. I don't think it's my colour...

SpagboLagain · 05/05/2012 10:38

Haha Scootergrrrl I did make a similar mistake with grey once. Very corpse-like.
Justfab, think you might sound like a summer....how about some cool pinks, pale or bright like fuschia, silver, pale blue, that sort of thing?

I always used to wear a lot of black, but now never wear on my top half. It really does drain your face and make you look washed out. If you have a lot of black tops, then you can try adding a splash of colour next to your face with some scarves or bright jewellry. The difference is honestly enormous.

thomasbodley · 05/05/2012 10:40

My rule of thumb: I never wear a nail varnish in a colour that I wouldn't wear in clothes.

MadAboutHotChoc · 05/05/2012 10:50

You sound like a summer to me - please do NOT dye your hair darker. You are meant to have cool light brown or ash blonde hair. Ditto for black - only winters can wear black.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 05/05/2012 12:25

I was thinking Fab might be a summer, which probably explains why she feels she looks washed out a lot of the time. Summers have a delicate glow which is easily swamped by too-heavy or too-warm shades.
Fab, it's not a question of how 'attractive' you think you are. Everyone has colours which are better for them than others and since we only have one life, it's best not to waste it thinking we don't deserve the best.

bigpants103 · 05/05/2012 13:31

I have tangy No7 on at the moment and it's a kind of corally orange. People keep commenting how nice it look. I'm a blonde with pale skin.

SpagboLagain · 05/05/2012 13:53

You could well be a fellow spring bigpants. I love a lovely zingy coral! :)

JustFab · 05/05/2012 15:07

OOoo, interesting. I thought I looked washed out because I am unattractive, pale and tired all the time. So what colours should I wear?

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 05/05/2012 19:02

Kettlewell Colours gives a rough idea here, although there's a lot more to it. Might be a good starting point, though.

MadAboutHotChoc · 05/05/2012 19:23

You need to have a colours consultation - I used House of Colours for mine.

JustFab · 05/05/2012 20:00

I have been wondering I could do with different colours of eyeshadow too. I have hazel coloured eyes and have been known to wear green, brown and cream eyeshadows with brown eyeliner and mascara. Not that I wear make up very often. The lady who threaded my eyebrows today didn't stop going on about my eyelashes Shock. Apparently they are really thick and curled

OP posts:
JustFab · 05/05/2012 20:02

I love navy blue clothes.

OP posts:
SpagboLagain · 05/05/2012 21:02

Well if you are a summer, experiment with some delicate cool pastels on your eyes. Pale metallic shadows, blues and lilacs? Think the brown liner etc is probably ok as long as not too warm and chocolatey, maybe go for more coffee colour.....but am no expert on summer, I am a spring! I have bought some nice tops in kettlewell, not v fancy but the colours are good

southeastastra · 05/05/2012 21:05
