I saw a lady the other day clearly wearing a BB cream that looked Fantastic, and I am still kicking myself for not asking her what it was. I am definately after more of the dewy/light reflecting type, more of a 'sheen' and am fair to medium toned. So far Ive tried

No 17 BB 7/10 nice but doesnt stay the day
No 7 BB nice but again, not amazing
Garnier BB 4/10 really didnt suit me, felt like chalk, not a good look.

I urge you to try some of the Asian brand bb creams. They are nothing like the Western versions, and they are amazing! You can only buy them from eBay as far as I know. I use the seller belo-girl, who sells genuine sealed products. They're generally only a few quid each and arrived within a week or two. I've ordered from her a couple of times with no problems. There's reviews on youtube if you don't know where to start.

I'm currently using one called Holika Holika petit bb cream, and it cost me £5.88 including postage, and is honestly better than most expensive foundations I've tried. There's lots of different types though, but they are far superior to western bb creams.

I use the "clearing" holika holika one, in the blue/green tube, but I have really oily skin. I also tried a sample of Tony Moly triple action ( I think?! ) which I also really liked. Have ordered a few more to try. The ones that get rave reviews on youtube are Missha and Skin79.

I know, the packaging is hilarious, I think I feel an obsession coming on, would like to try other make up items to from there.

Yes, definitely recommend the Korean/japanese brands.
They have been around for years and the formulas are really better. They are extremely serious about complexion.

Application is key.
Put a drop on fingertips and dab them on face starting with areas wich need more coverage then blend gently into rest of face.
The idea is that the texture melts onto skin.
If you warm them in hands before applying you spoil the texture and effect.

The colours are quite pale, as that is generally the fashion for Asian girls and women. Porcelain doll-like, if you know what I mean. Therefore the colour selection isn't great. Most of the formulas will adapt to a degree though, and blend with your skin tone.

I'm NC25 in MAC, and the ones I've tried have been great. Not sure if anyone with darker skin tone than me would get away with it though.

Funny enough, as a very very pale complexioned woman, Japanese products from companies such as Shiseido and Shu Uemura have been my salvation. Google some of the Japanese beauty products because they have amazing concealers, matifiers and serums for paler folk.

Many Shiseido products are not sold over the counter here but can be accessed online.

atree I am very pale but I have a pink undertone - I find it difficult to get very pale stuff to match as a lot of it is yellowy. How does the Japanese/Korean stuff fare?

I'd like to place quite a large order, but do you think I'll get stung by customs if I do? Have only ordered one or two items at a time so far, and it's been fine.

I have a massive wish list of all that stuff.

The ones I have tried, are kind of greyish when first applied, and then adapt to your skin tone. There is a review by a couple of American girls on youtube where they swatch several different BB creams, and the colours of each vary. Some are more pinky than others. Leoeli is a pinkier one, I believe.

Yeah me too, I love all the kitsch stuff. I want the bumble bee hand cream, and the bunny face mist. Make up is so much fun!

Having spent a lot of time in Seoul and Pusan (Busan), I noticed that the Korean skin has yellow undertones.

However....many Japanese and Korean women like the porcelain pale to chalky white complexion so many of their products aim to replicate this by toning down those yellow/orange tones. Shiseido make a product called White Lucency Refining Softener, a Brightening serum and White Lucency day Moisturiser available here but the products sold in the East are much more potent.

Prescriptives used to test your skin colour undertones and offered formulations to match either the pink, orange, yellow or red shades found. That was handy for concealers. Would be good to know if any other companies offer this.

I like many of the Bello Girl products but struggle with some of the infantile packaging. The Harajuku schoolgirl look I have (feminist) issues with.

I suppose the overtly sexual advertising, and the "sexy sophisticated" branding of Western cosmetics could be a feminist issue too though.

I find the packaging refreshing. It's kind of saying that make up is just fun, and not to be taken too seriously, rather than the Western idea that we need make up to make us attractive and sexy, or we won't get get a man.

I didn't mean to offend anybody. I love the creams packaged in fruit shaped pots and the penguin hand creams but the 'sexy schoolgirl' picture on some of the creams bothers me.

And yes, Quinn, I totally agree that Western sexualised ad campaigns are just as obnoxious. i take on board your point of make up being fun although the skin whitening creams I have mentioned can have an insidious subtext regarding racial standards of beauty.
