Genuine question for wearers of skinny jeans

PuffPants · 25/04/2012 21:08

Do you like how you look in them? I keep thinking I'll give them a go but I just think I look really bad in them. I'm a fairly average size 10 and plenty of women bigger than me seem to getting away with them, although I do have chunky calves so perhaps that's my problem.

But really, is this an emperor's new clothes thing or does everyone else just really like the way they make their body look?

I am genuinely interested - not slating your fashion choice.

They are soooooooooo much more flattering than leggings but just as comfy - I think they make me look slimmer than bootcuts. Am a heavy-thighed tallish size 12.

choceyes · 25/04/2012 21:13

well I think they look good on me. I'm a short size 8 with skinny legs/calves/ankles. I don't have much of a bum either. They flatter me much more than boot cut. And I love the way that i can wear a volumious top to balance it out. I am an apple shape so tightly fitted tops aren't flattering on me due to big tummy.

ishopthereforeiam · 25/04/2012 21:14

Size 8 too with v skinny legs ( thicker round tbe waist, not just when pg!) so love skinny jeans with a longish cardi...

OctopusSting · 25/04/2012 21:14

These are the best skinnies i have found. Very comfy and flattering. Go for it! Smile

VintageNoir · 25/04/2012 21:14

I'm a curvy size 12 - I like how I look in mine providing I have a long top which covers to about halfway down the thigh, and even more so if I'm wearing boots.

The ones I wear are from Warehouse and ultra comfy - hence why I bought them.

Schlumberger · 25/04/2012 21:17

Very good question! I am 5'9 and size 12 but I was persuaded into a pair of madly expensive 7 for all mankind skinnies by a clever sales assistant a year ago. They are so comfortable and gorgeously dark blue - but every time I put them on I feel I look like an elephant. There's nowhere to hide in a pair of skinny jeans, is there?!! Strangely, though, my husband always makes Phwoar-style noises when he sees me in them.

StyleGuile · 25/04/2012 21:17

I think that they can take a bit of getting used to. You could try them with a longer tunic top or longer cardi so they are not quite so full on to start with, and/or put them with a wedge if you lifestyle permits, to elevate you a little. Doing that just makes them less of the centre of attention of your outfit, if you get my drift! Also the right pair makes a difference - and they can differ a lot.

UpperFuckingCrusty · 25/04/2012 21:19

Erm, I dunno really.

I like the fact that they tuck into my boots and don't trail in the endless mud [lives in Wales]

They do make my pear shape more pronounced though.

godluvsatryer · 25/04/2012 21:25

Have a look in Gap, they do curvy skinnies, they fit nicely over any tummy you have (well, I've got one and I'm a 10 too), I do like them, I think they go with just about anything and are great with boots in the winter. Go for it!

MrsSnow · 25/04/2012 21:31

I like them just because on horrible days like today my jeans don't get wet at the bottom.

I definitely agree they look better than leggings.

Mombojombo · 25/04/2012 21:37

I'll prob sound a bit fetish-y here, but I love a skinny because of the amount of ankle (if turned up) or foot they show. And they don't flap in the rain/wind. As long as I wear a longer top I'm generally happy with how they look and I'm a curvy size '13'. It's all about the ankles and the shoes on the end of 'em!

lololizzy · 25/04/2012 21:41

yes I do, and I'm bigger than you. I'm a very curvy 14 (more 16 on top). But....am tall, I have long slim legs, and my calves are quite skinny. Basically I'm top heavy and little from the bum down! They are very flattering on me, having said that, it doesn't really balance out my top half, looking like big tum and tits on stilts

lololizzy · 25/04/2012 21:43

in fact, haven't found many that are skin tight on my calves. feels like a freak how massively out of proportion and triangle shaped I am My brother calls me Fat-Thin (fat on top, thin below)

ishopthereforeiam · 25/04/2012 21:50

Also buy mine mainly from Gap, tbe 'always skinny' style, love it!

salamanda · 25/04/2012 21:50

Yes, I'm an 8 and I like the way they make my body look and I like the silhouette they give. I think if you've got good, evenly proportioned legs and bum they look nice whether you're a size 6 or size 16.

TheFallenMadonna · 25/04/2012 21:54

I wear them and I'm HUGE compared to you. Tall though, with long legs. It's all about proportion.

hmc · 25/04/2012 21:58

Like schlum - am a 5 ft 9 (well 8.5) size 12. They look fine on me - although I do have toned legs due to lots of running

scarlettsmummy2 · 25/04/2012 22:05

I like them, but I also have a couple of pairs of straight cut jeans that aren't quite as tight on the calfs but still flattering.

QueenCadbury · 25/04/2012 22:10

I don't get on with them at all. I find them restricting and unable to bend/kneel easily. I also don't like long tops or cardigans covering my bum as it just makes it look huger than it already is. I'm also a size 10 but prefer straight legs.

1gglePiggle · 25/04/2012 22:26

I don't think they're anywhere near as comfortable as leggings. I've got top shop Leigh's and am always relieved to get the buggers off!

Specialbrew · 25/04/2012 23:03

I am a short-arse size 8, leggings look terrible on me. I am an hourglass, so super-skinnies with heeled ankle boots, or mid-calf heeled boots balance me out and tend to look good. In summer though I go for a straight-leg jean, mostly because I find them more flattering when wearing sandals or sneakers. Skinnies and sandals seem to draw attention to my hips. Fave skinnies are uniqlo super skinny tapered, and I wear MIH and Hudson straight leg jeans for summer.

ThatVikRinA22 · 25/04/2012 23:07

im a size 14 but skinnies make me look soooooo much slimmer - i wear them with longer tops to hide hips/tum but i have a decent pair of pins which are long in proportion to the rest of me so they make me look slim and toned. i do a bit of running and my legs have benefited so much.

i love them. so much more flattering when worn with the right top.

ToastedTeacakes · 26/04/2012 08:54

I'm ok with them, too self critical though, even if I suit them. I think they work for me better than looser fit jeans. My calves are stupidly thin though and would prefer them a bit larger to even out the discrepancy between calf and thigh. My thighs are sort of average sized but it does give the impression that they're bigger being offset by those mini calves.

I think fitted jeans suit pretty much every body shape, except maybe the extreme of extremes (whatever they are). I'm on the thin side, so more form fitting clothes are preferred so I don't get lost in 'em. Skinny fit jeans and pencil skirts seem to give me more curves, which is a good thing by me! Can't stand the presumption that larger ladies shoudn't wear them (body mafia alert), it's your individual shape and how you style them that matters. I don't like super skinnies on anyone though, you know, when the fabric is so thin (with polyester - why are they doing that???) and the jeans are so tight that they hurt the skin.

Well placed pockets, sturdy cotton and a nice ankle width all the way!

MadAboutHotChoc · 26/04/2012 09:15

I am a size 8/10 and love my skinny jeans. I think its how you wear these that matters. I am a straight up and down so can wear these how I like but pear shapes need to wear long line tops.

I hate seeing skinnies with empire line tops though - it makes them look pregnant.

I think leggings are definitely the emperor's new clothes - I very rarely see anyone look really good in these.

FannyGallop · 26/04/2012 09:35

I'm a 14/16 and I love them. I really thought I'd look like a potato with straws for legs, but they just look sexy. Agree with the Phwoar comments they produce.

I think go dark denim, really dark, to start with.

Seriously, I am amazed how nice they look. I thought they were emperors new clothes too.
