Dress for a wedding

Kione · 11/04/2012 14:01

Hello there!

I need your help please! I have looking on the internet for a dress to attend a wedding, but I am confused.

I live in a very small place and we only have Dorothy Perkings, Next, New Look, TopShop, Miss Selfridge, and M&S, they are all very small. Hence I have been looking on the internet, but all the dresses I like have reviews that say "I received lovely compliments at work". I like the pencil dresses and recently the ones that have darker panels on the sides, being a size 12-14 and big boobies I think those fit me nicely, but I am worried the ones I like are too plain, fit for work but not a wedding.

Can you please give me some advice and ideas? I am going to town tomorrow for a last look, if I don't find anything I'll start ordering on the net.

Thanks!

Depends on how much you want to spend. Try Coast

Kione · 11/04/2012 14:52

Yes, I forgot, I wouldn't want to spend more than £70, ideally less that £50. I know is very little but I am a SAHM and I know I am not going to use that dress any time soon again...

These are a bit pricey but I can see what a party dress looks like as opposed to an office dress now! It has to have some sort of shine or flowers or no straps (for me impossible unfortunatelly). And they have a "sale" part so will look into that.

Thanks!

www.very.co.uk/teatro-sequin-pencil-dress/1069770173.prd?browseToken=%2fq%2fteatro+dress%2fo%2f2

I like this one, similar style as you decribed but a bit more dressy with the sequins.

Also this one is nice www.lipsy.co.uk/store/day-dresses/lipsy-textured-silhouette-dress/product-is-JD01418_041

Kione · 11/04/2012 15:48

Thanks peanutsmuggler! They both are perfect, isn't the first one a bit too sexy? maybe thats my problem I think they look a bit too OTT and so I look at the boring ones! The second one is a lot along the lines of the ones I have been looking at, so is not too office-y then? I really like it, I have cream or black platform shoes and a black jacket to go with it Grin

Have you tried pepperberry - designed for big boobs! this dress received rave reviews on mumsnet, which made me buy it in both colours - it's great!

peanutsmuggler · 11/04/2012 16:03

I don't think its too sexy, Its not too short and not low cut.

I 'm considering it for a wedding but its not until August so don't want to get it too soon in case I manage to lose some weight!

I quite like this one too www.next.co.uk/g3744s3#834901g37

Kione · 11/04/2012 16:04

They are great lisbapalea I didn't know about this website! deffinitelly putting it in my favourites :)

OK peanutsmuggler its probably the model being sexy then! It is deffinitelly gorgeous but not sure aboutthe sequins as our 2.6 year old DD will be there for the day do and if I have to pick her up etc. my sequins might ruin her dress! It has happened before... I ruined a dress with a sequined handbag :(

Oasis has some really nice stuff for around £70.

I spent a fortune on a Laura Ashley dress for a wedding, then saw Oasis had some nice 'party' stuff.

Plus, Coast sales often have dresses for around £70.

netbook · 11/04/2012 16:34

What about this the skirt isn't so tight, you might me more comfortable in it.

Kione · 11/04/2012 16:51

netbook, yes! that's lovely too, I never saw it when I was looking on the next site?? Maybe my head is overflowing now...

I am saving your ideas in my favourites, so if I don't see anything inb town tomorrow will decide for one of these.

Thanks a lot!

Found this in Pepperberry: www.bravissimo.com/pepperberry/products/sale/dresses/evening-dresses/tiered-frill-dress/blush/cf05bs/?show=16&sort=1&dress=12&curvy=cv&level=3#reviews

Not sure about the colour but I love the shape and it looks comfy. Would it fo with black shoes and black jacket? Or will that be a bit too boring?

Still not sure about that colour. Will keep checking your suggestions!

DorothyPerkins have some lovely ones similar to the ones you have described. I have just ordered this one for a wedding www.dorothyperkins.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33053&storeId=12552&productId=4661737&langId=-1&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=208648&parent_categoryId=208600&pageSize=200&refinements=category~[212426|208648]&noOfRefinements=1 and there is currently a 25% discount code on for DP. Hope link works as first time I have tried it Grin

Kione · 11/04/2012 20:07

Thats nice too but I am not too keen on the front for my figure. The one I like was from DP, but I saw it in a magazine and when I looked on the page its different! And its the one where the reviewers said they used it for work... The one in the magazine looks a lot more wedding-y Hmm

Kione I am a Pepperberry fan and like the dress you linked to. I don't think black is the right colour to go with it though, maybe nude shoes or metallic? H&M have some lovely bright fitted jackets, go for a contrast maybe?

Kione · 11/04/2012 20:55

I have nude shoes, but not jacket other than black. I am really not very good at putting clothes together so I wouldn't know what jacket to put with that :(

OP posts:
Jakadaal · 11/04/2012 21:39

kione really like that navy DP one - might have to relook at DP! As for jacket - would a pashmina or some sort of wrap be an alternative?

Kione · 11/04/2012 22:07

Jakadaal that is the one some reviews said they got compliments at work! I don't want to wear a "work" dress to a wedding

OP posts:
Kione · 11/04/2012 22:08

As for the jacket thing, I don't know I am really bad at this, every single wedding I have been I went in vlack, thats why I wanted to change for once but I am finding it difficult!

OP posts:
MoonlightandRoses · 11/04/2012 22:12

Think all of the below would go with the jacket /shoe colours you have, but don't know what their/your style is, so hopefully there is something in here to suit Smile

Second Jakadaal's idea of pashmina/wrap instead - it is likely to be able to go style-wise with anything you buy, and can be something you can use again.

fuschia Wallis dress - it comes in a range of colours

Episode silk devore

Episode grey/white cocktail

Mango monochrome

v.simple DP dress

another v.simple dress - comes in grey or navy

Kione · 11/04/2012 22:36

Episode grey/white cocktail

This was my favourite and they don't have my size!

My style is quite simple, I like a mixture of traditional clothes but I used to be a rock chick when younger so I have biker jackets and stuff like that.

So I love the pencil dresses or even with a 50's or 60's vibe, and I like simple dresses, but I was afraid they where not going to be dressy enough for a wedding.

The Wallis dress is good too, but the same problem, I am afraid of going too simple and then feel bad if everyone else is more dressed up!

OP posts:
MoonlightandRoses · 11/04/2012 22:43

That's such a shame about the size not being available.

I don't think you'd look to plain in the Wallis dress though. Look on it the other way - you would be wearing a classic, and so many people look silly by going over the top with too shiny / bling / evening for an all day event.

With current trends, putting something rock-chicky (if that's a phrase!) with a tailored item looks really edgy for day, and then you have 'seriously stylish' once the jacket comes off.

Do you mind me asking what size? Can do a bit more looking then Smile
