Weird to never wear make-up?

hockeyforjockeys · 10/04/2012 15:04

Ok I don't actually think I'm being unreasonable, I just wanted to find out how much of a weirdo I am.

I've never been big into make-up, I wore it little bit in my teens and early 20s but was pretty rubbish at making it look good. I just can't stand the feeling of it on my face and I have a tendency to rub at it as it annoys me.

Recently I've just stopped altogether, I've got two really posh events coming up and am wondering whether I should just not bother as normal, or actually invest in a little bit to try and scrub up a bit. However I'm leaning towards just not bothering with it ever again. Wibu?

If you are going to give it a go I would keep it light, maybe some tinted moisturiser, mineral powder, a light lip gloss and dash of mascara, I think it's great you dont feel the need to wear it, I however, feel naked without a little something on and find it really boosts my confidence on a night out

thereonthestair · 10/04/2012 15:10

I almost never bother, certainly not at work, and rarely when going out. I just don't like it and think it does nothing apart from look like I am wearing make up. I'm happy and so is DH. I wore it for a job interview or two, and it got so much comment I stopped again! The comments was positive but it made me feel much more vulnerable than not wearing it did.

As far as I am concnered there are better things to spend time and money on

Kayano · 10/04/2012 15:11

I am obsessed with makeup

Second the tinted moisturiser as long as you don't have oily skin. You might end up very shiny by the end oh the event.

Sarcalogos · 10/04/2012 15:14

I only wear it for going out/special occasions. Just CBA most of the time!

I think that's normal. No one can tell you what to put on your face, or when. And I do worry for the self confidence of people who can't be seen without it...

TheNightIsDarkAndFullOfTerrors · 10/04/2012 15:16

I used to feel naked without earrings once in a previous life and today I realised that I hadn't even thought of them for about ten years Confused

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 10/04/2012 15:16

I've just got back from 2 months away and I ended up chucking my makeup bag to the bottom of the suitcase - it was very liberating!
I assumed it would resurface as soon as I landed, as holiday is different to real life but its still hidden away. Even a trip to the Trafford Centre - where I was clearly a freak for not having makeup on hasn't resulted in it resurfacing...

Plus points - skin is better so don't need the foundation/concealer anyway
Minus points - eyes look too small without mascara but I don't care at the moment!

FairyPenguin · 10/04/2012 15:21

I don't wear make up either. Only for weddings and some nights out when I can be bothered. I am so inexperienced that I feel that it looks bad once Ive put it on. Also, I have eczema on bits of my face which is why I don't really wear it. Powder makes it drier, anything else not great as my skin gets very hot. As I've got older, I'm wondering whether I should be putting something on as I am aware that my face has uneven skin tone (prob combination of eczema patches and wearing glasses), and that I should be wearing some kind of UV protection on my skin. But I still haven't done anything about it.

hockeyforjockeys · 10/04/2012 15:21

Weirdly I feel less confident with it as I feel that everyone is thinking blimey hockey has actually bothered to put a bit of lippy on.

Like the suggestions for some low key stuff, but I agree rather spend money on gorgeous dresses and getting my hair cut.

There should be a 'that I'd' in that last sentence!

I suffered from bad skin as a teenager and agree it has affected my self confidence, although my skin is clear now I am prone to occasional break outs, so some sort of foundation is definately a necessary to me, however when I go on holiday I find I never need it as my skin looks so great anything on top of it just masks the glow! The rest of it is just because it looks pretty tbh, I'm a sucker for a shiny lipgloss, I also have my hair and nails done, carefully pick an outfit before a night out, so make up I find is just an extension of that, some people just aren't fussed tho and more power to em

NagooBunnytail · 10/04/2012 15:25

If you are condfident and happy without then I suppose I wouldn't bother.

I wear a bit for work, I used to wear it 'for fun' but TBH I just can't be arsed with it anymore (I am 32) I like nail varnish though.

I am a bit spotty so I usually wear a bit of 'compact foundation' I can't feel that on, so I don't rub it off. I also put mascara on as that makes the most difference to making me look 'awake' IYSWIM.

nickelhasababy · 10/04/2012 15:26

yanbu.

i very rarely wear make up.

when i wear it, for mega special occasions, i feel weird.
like everyone's staring.

i wear it to dance onstage, but then i expect everyone to be watching! Grin

NagooBunnytail · 10/04/2012 15:27

I used to use that olay definity moisturiser, it's supposed to even out your skin tone. I found it for about £4 in 'savers' and I didn't feel like I needed make up when I had that.

Do you moisturise OP?

FondleWithCare · 10/04/2012 15:28

I wear it for nights out because it stops my face looking too washed out in photos. Shallow, I know. I haven't worn it in the daytime for about 5 years now because I really can't be bothered.

Ephiny · 10/04/2012 15:29

I've never worn makeup, probably never will - I just don't feel the need, and don't like having 'stuff' on my face (have to use lip balm sometimes as I get very sore dry lips in winter, but don't like it).

hockeyforjockeys · 10/04/2012 15:29

When I remember to, but I'm rubbish at doing it every day without fail. I think I need to be a bit more disciplined now as I'm 29 and run the risk off looking like an elephants backside in a few years.

YANBU. I'm 30 and could probably count on 1 hand the number of times I've worn make up. I did for my wedding but it was hardly anything and would never have mascara on, can't bear the feel of it.

chibi · 10/04/2012 15:32

life is too short to put shit on your face when you don't want to, and no one needs to.

squoosh · 10/04/2012 15:33

I am a believer in doing what makes you feel most comfortable and confident. Certainly don?t wear makeup to an event if you?d rather not.

Personally, I love makeup, love trying out new products and trying new looks. If was told I?d never be able to wear makeup again I wouldn?t be overly delighted. I love the calming 10 mins I spend in the morning putting it on. This is my 'getting my thoughts together time'.

Recently however I?ve freed myself from the tyranny of fake tan and am beyond delighted. No more of that constant exfoliating, slapping it on, ?will it come out even or won?t it?. Now I?m pale. Hopefully interesting with or without the tan. :)

McPopcornMouseNFries · 10/04/2012 15:33

YANBU, I never ever wear makeup - in fact, I only wore lip gloss to my own wedding :o

chibi · 10/04/2012 15:34

i wear a combination sunscreen/moisturiser thing as i deem appropriate and that is all.

no one has vomited or run terrified screaming from my unpainted face. yet. Grin

Ephiny · 10/04/2012 15:36

I have wondered if I should wear makeup for my wedding, but probably won't - as I'm not used to wearing it there's a good chance of it going wrong, and I don't really know what colours etc would suit me. Also I want to look like me in the photos!

toddlerama · 10/04/2012 15:38

If you never wear it don't buy it for one off events - go to a benefit or mac counter and book them to do it. Otherwise you'll end up buying stuff that will just fester. Smile

thebody · 10/04/2012 15:38

I personally wouldn't go to the local shop without makeup on as I wouldn't feel dressed but that's my business.

It's yours not to wear makeup, up to you

hockeyforjockeys · 10/04/2012 15:43

chibi glad to hear!

Very happy to hear of stories of people who didn't even bother for their own wedding Grin. Im feeling much less of a weirdo now, having spent the weekend with 17 other women who were all wearing make up all weekend.
