Weird to never wear make-up?

Ok I don't actually think I'm being unreasonable, I just wanted to find out how much of a weirdo I am.

I've never been big into make-up, I wore it little bit in my teens and early 20s but was pretty rubbish at making it look good. I just can't stand the feeling of it on my face and I have a tendency to rub at it as it annoys me.

Recently I've just stopped altogether, I've got two really posh events coming up and am wondering whether I should just not bother as normal, or actually invest in a little bit to try and scrub up a bit. However I'm leaning towards just not bothering with it ever again. Wibu?

Have you ever been shown how to put it on properly. You can book a lesson at a make-up counter in a department store.

Personally, I wouldn't leave the house without it and spend about 2.5 minutes on it every day.

Foundation (as close to your skin colour as possible)
concealer for shadows under eyes
translucent powder
blusher
mascara
lippy

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 10/04/2012 22:53

I don't wear makeup very often. Once in a blue moon. I'm in my 30s.

I have good skin and I think its better for never having worn it.
I also have more money than I would otherwise.

People don't laugh at other people who don't wear makeup. They do however laugh at women with painted eyebrows, an orange glow and lip liner that makes you look like a clown...

...if you aren't very good at it, you end up looking a lot worse than if you wore nothing. And its amazing how many people don't realise how they are making themselves up to look like a box of spanners.

Be who you are. If thats without makeup, be that. Makeup isn't going to hide you.

everythingtodo · 10/04/2012 23:06

when i forget to put mascara on i can guarantee someone will tell me im looking tired. im blonde though so it makes a big difference! personally i wouldnt leave the house wirhout diundatuin blusher and mascara- but each to their own.!

mardyelsie · 10/04/2012 23:34

I'm 42, and in the last year I've worn make up exactly twice. Once for my BIL's wedding, and once when I went out at Christmas for a works do. Even when I do wear it I never bother with foundation, just a bit of eyeliner, mascara and lippy. YADNBU.

MargueritaaPracatan · 11/04/2012 05:10

Oh I love make up.

Me, only better - what's not to like !

Polished and groomed are the key words for me but I don't care if you choose not to wear it, that's your call.

sashh · 11/04/2012 05:34

If you are going to a posh do just book in at a shop for your make up to be done professionally.

Make up goes off, if you rarely wear it then it is cheaper to have a makeover than buy the stuff.

MsWeatherwax · 11/04/2012 05:49

I don't, and I used to be very good at applying it. Not at wedding or anything. I don't like the feel of it and I feel more attractive without it.

YANBU in the slightest - and I really wouldn't bother going and getting it professionally done for a special do, just for the sake of it. How odd, if you never normally wear it.

I wear it every day - wish I could feel better about myself, look better and feel more polished without it, but I don't.

I enjoy it and like the way it improves the way I look, but am fully aware of the social conditioning that has gone on to make me think like that. DH is the same age as me but oddly, he doesn't need a layer of foundation and a couple of coats of mascara to feel better about himself. Wink I wonder why...

I'm a complete dichotomy - I hate the message that is basically sent out that women need to go to so much more effort with their looks and basically have to 'improve' themselves (all this 'me only better' nonsense). But not enough not to buy into and perpetuate it myself. Plus, I love the products, reaing blogs and buying and trying new things.

bagelmonkey · 11/04/2012 06:06

YANBU
I don't own any make up. I wore some on my wedding day, but apart from experimenting as a teenager I've never had any. I can't put it on and it makes my face uncomfortable. I have started to wonder if I could just get a really easy to apply foundation to make me look a bit better, but eye make up will always be beyond my capabilities.

CheerfulYank · 11/04/2012 06:12

I always wear a very little (foundation, mascara, lip gloss, eyeliner even though I can't keep it from sliding down my face Hmm) My hair is very dark and my skin is very pale and my eyes are bizarrely light-colored so I need something to keep me from looking ghoulish.

YANBU though, do what you like! :)

nooka · 11/04/2012 06:29

I've very very rarely worn any make up, and don't own any at present. I quite enjoy stage make up (although I've not been on stage since I was a teenager) but otherwise like my face the way it is. My friends used to like dolling me up but I never felt like me at the end of it (plus they insisted that I took off my glasses so making me pretty effectively blind). For a posh do I'd go for a great dress and a fabulous haircut and feel like I was making plenty of effort to look (and feel) great.

MargueritaaPracatan · 11/04/2012 08:32

But, sodoff um, it is me only better. Sorry you seem to have a problem with that but it's not mine! And there's certainly no "So much more effort about it" for me, I'm a seasoned pro. Chill oot !

iscream · 11/04/2012 08:43

You don't need make-up to look good. Maybe go for a couple of facials in the month leading up to your events, and have your eyelashes tinted, and hair cut really well. Use some teeth whiteners, and get outside everyday so you have a healthy colour.
Clear glowing natural skin, with white teeth, nice nails, and good hair, are very attractive.

Nancy66 · 11/04/2012 08:46

I've never met anybody who DIDN'T look better after a sillful make-up application.

the problem is that so many women - most in fact - have no idea how to apply it.

PigeonPair · 11/04/2012 09:12

Have to say I wear it every day - even straight after the DC's were born (not in hospital obviously) as subconsciously I think it made me feel I still had a bit of control! It really is a personal thing but my mum and sister are the same so perhaps that's where I get it from. I FEEL better with it on but I know a lot of my friends think I am crazy.

namechangingagain · 11/04/2012 09:19

I dont wear any either, and DH doesnt like it, not in a - how dare you wear make - sort of way, but in a "you are so beautiful" (believe me I am not), you dont need that stuff.

Fine by me, if DH thinks my wobbly belly, fat legs and mummy bags under my eyes I am beautiful, then I dont bother.

Its wasnt a sudden thing, I just wore less and less and now I dont even know where my make up is.

SamuelWestsMistress · 11/04/2012 09:45

I love make up and wear it most days.

But it's one of those things that if you REALLY think about it....isn't it really odd? Putting colours on your face. I realise that is a random thought!

upahill · 11/04/2012 09:54

Have to say I wear it every day - even straight after the DC's were born (not in hospital obviously

What do you mean obviously?

I wore make up throughout labour and had a touch up as soon as they were born for the photos.
I don't care if people think that is shallow - those photos last forever!! Grin
16 years later I still wear make up every day.
It's my daily ritual - sokmething I enjoy doing.

BBQJuly · 11/04/2012 10:17

Agree with iscream.

Avoid alcohol, smoking and junk food, drink plenty of water, eat healthy fresh foods, get enough sleep, use a good moisturiser, and your skin should have a natural glow without any need to fake this with makeup.

BBQJuly · 11/04/2012 10:23

... and exercise.

Pinkglow · 11/04/2012 10:28

My mum never wears makeup so I guess I didnt feel very confidant with it on and was very unsure how to apply it. I never used to really wear makeup aside from my wedding and special nights out. Cant say that my skin was the better for it though as I have always had terrible skin and its my cleanser and mosturiser that helps that side of things not the lack of make-up

However the last few months I have started wearing it for work and going out. Im now abit of a makeup junkie and I guess being in my 30s now makeup improves my overall look and makes my skin look alot more glowing as it had started to look a little dull.

YANBU - do whatever you like

squoosh · 11/04/2012 10:29

For me I think wearing makeup daily has actually improved my skin as foundation acts as a kind of barrier against wind and rain.

Nancy66 · 11/04/2012 10:30

Exercise will actually age you facially

Marne · 11/04/2012 10:32

I very rarely wear make up (maybe wear it 3 or 4 times a year), make up makes my skin sore and gives me eye infections (have tried so many brands) so its easier not to wear any. If i have a spot on my face i may wear a tiny bit of foundation but thats very rarely. It doesn't bother me, i think most people look fine without make up and quite a few people look auful with make up on Smile.
