Weird to never wear make-up?

Ok I don't actually think I'm being unreasonable, I just wanted to find out how much of a weirdo I am.

I've never been big into make-up, I wore it little bit in my teens and early 20s but was pretty rubbish at making it look good. I just can't stand the feeling of it on my face and I have a tendency to rub at it as it annoys me.

Recently I've just stopped altogether, I've got two really posh events coming up and am wondering whether I should just not bother as normal, or actually invest in a little bit to try and scrub up a bit. However I'm leaning towards just not bothering with it ever again. Wibu?

Exercise will actually age you facially
Depends on the exercise.

MNHelenisSTILLPansfavourite · 11/04/2012 10:48

Nancy66 is talking through her hat. Not hydrating after any exercise, and not consuming anti-oxidants to combat the free-radicals in your body may lead to aging of the face skin, but we don't know if this is at an accelerated rate. Genetic make up (pun) also determines this.

squoosh · 11/04/2012 10:56

Exercise is great for the body and complexion. I have to say though, lots of runners have saggy faces.

Nancy66 · 11/04/2012 10:58

of course genes play a part in ageing - but certain exercise can be facially ageing too - especially after 40.

'runner's face' is well known.

I wear makeup every day and i love it. I wore it during and after labour and it made me feel a hell of a lot better.
Many women don't know how to apply makeup and that is why they are very negative about it. I agree with the poster that said that most women look better with some makeup. Btw, I have been wearing makeup for many years and have very good skin.

BBQJuly · 11/04/2012 11:06

I do know how to apply makeup but still usually prefer not to wear it.

There's so much advertising of makeup, the latest fashions and so on, that we've lost sight of how beautiful people are without these things. Fashion, makeup and the like are a huge moneyspinner.

MNHelenisSTILLPansfavourite · 11/04/2012 11:06

yes, nancy, if you are a regular marathon runner etc( marathon squash players will have the same 'look' - it's about rehydration) - nice healthy 4-6 mile runners are beaming pictures of youthfulness!!

gordyslovesheep · 11/04/2012 11:08

I dislike how it feels claggy on my skin and only wear make up if I am going out at night - I am 42 with bloody good genes and don;t need it

Nancy66 · 11/04/2012 11:12

No, any old runner....(swimmers too actually.)

MNHelenisSTILLPansfavourite · 11/04/2012 11:14

yeah okay, whatever.

KatMumsnet · 11/04/2012 11:19

Hi, we've moved this into Style and Beauty. Thanks.

EllenParsons · 11/04/2012 11:38

What are you talking about, about running and swimming aging your face?! I am a v regular swimmer and occasional runner in my 20s slightly freaked out by your comments on "runner's face" - please clarify!

And I wear makeup every day. Makes me look better and feel more confident.

skrumle · 11/04/2012 11:41

i don't think this belongs in S&B since i would reckon in this section more people are likely to wear make-up than across MN as a whole and the OP was really looking for assurance that lots of other people don't feel the need to wear make-up!

upahill · 11/04/2012 12:05

I agree with you skrumle

Just because the post mentions make up doesn't automaticaly mean it belongs in S and B.
You would have had more diverse opinions in the other topic.

Oh well - It's MN , they can do what they want.

polyhymnia · 11/04/2012 12:16

Definitely YANBU.

I have good skin and colouring that doesn't easily look washed out and there are many more days I don't wear makeup than do. Feel 100% comfortable without it. I do use good skin care though, plus sun protection, and often Imedeen, and do tint my brows and lashes. And drink masses of water.

Do like the fun side of makeup, and will put on subtle look (tinted moisturiser, soft lipshine, cream eyeshadow, etc) when going out. Sometimes just use a primer, not even tinted moisturiser.

My DH is not a fan of makeup and thinks it looks aging. Have to agree with him it often does - have seen loads of women of my sort of (mature) age looking much older than necessary because of harsh makeup. Don't agree that everyone looks better with it. Each to their own, though.

QuinnFabray · 11/04/2012 12:49

I love the way make up makes me look. Sometimes I go for the "me but better" look, and sometimes I slap it on and look a bit like Barbara Cartland. I don't care, it's fun.

I never used to wear a scrap of make up though. Until I was about 34. I taught myself how to use it properly by watching youtube videos, and now I wear it every single day. This has definately coincided with my face beginning to age. I can no longer rely on youth, and make up gives me that illusion ( if only for a few more years ). I do have very obvious red thread veins around my nose and on my cheeks too, which I am thrilled to be able to hide.

snapsnap · 11/04/2012 15:29

I wear it every day - foundation, powder, blusher, mascara, lippy and if in work eye make up. I just feel more together with it on.

Pigeon I actually put make up in hospital after having my 2 DD's. There are obviously the pics of me looking pretty shell shocked with babies straight after their birth but a couple of hours later I have some nice photos and I have make up on.

ragged · 11/04/2012 20:16

I don't & hardly ever have tried to wear makeup.
Truth is, I don't care about looking good. Or looking good in that way, at least.

It would upset me a lot to be fat, if I'm honest. That's mostly to do with feeling strong & fit & able in my body, but vanity is there, too. Yet the art of making my face look marginally better, just can't see the point.

I greatly admire a friend who is very skilled with her make up: she looks much better after it's on but you can't tell that it is there if she didn't say so.

DD is into makeup which I find slightly fascinating. I would like her to learn to apply it like my friend can.
