My hair looks like shit. What the hell am I going to do?

I had my hair cut short 2 weeks ago. I'd been feeling mumsy and frumpy and thought I'd be brave and have my long hair drastically restyled. It just looks so ugly though and I know I won't get used to it. I've taken to wearing baseball caps and bandanas Blush to hide all the clumpy layers at the top and I look foolish.

Hairdresser mentioned extensions but couldn't give me a price - she said somewhere between £400 and £700 Shock. She also said it wouldn't look good because the bonds would be visible.

I look mannish and ugly. I've been thinking of attaching strands of beads to my hair line just so I can scoop the lot back in a ponytail and hide the disaster underneath. I don't care if I look weird or quirky. I need outside the box suggestions here.

wear an on-trend polka dot headscarf. Or a cotton (so non sweaty) beanie or even a cap.

Then put ALL your focus on your face!

Wear nice eye make up, some lipgloss, etc.

nice ear rings.

The hair will grow back, soon enough you will be able to do something with it

Chandon · 03/04/2012 09:32

porca, never x posted before :)

piratecat · 03/04/2012 09:58

oh diddy, i can't help but smile. I am sorry tho that you made such a daft mistake and are having to put up with it now.

you wally!!!! (meant in a friendly way).

I really think you will have to embrace it, somehow, and make it 'your hair'. Forget the hair that's gone, cos it's gone. BUT it will come back one day.

Now, you need to get a bit savvy with how to style a short cut. I use a fantastic product form Toni and Guy ( wouldn't EVER go back there for a cut tho so not recommending them as hairdressers), its the gum stuff in a little red metal pot, and its great for giving hair an edgy look. Put it on dry hair, and you can mold it, it doesn't look greasy (don't use tooooooooo much tho), pop it on the ends. Make a side parting. If you have a mullet, i would consider getting the back cut up and in tbh, because that will look far more like a complete cut than hanging on to the little length you have left at the sides or back iyswim? Invest in a groovy hair clip, or alice band. pretty little stud earrings.

This has had brill reviews and i have used it before:

www.boots.com/en/Lee-Stafford-Hair-Growth-Treatment-200ml_854442/

For me i'm about 99% sure it made my hair grow more than the half an inch per month than it does naturally. It also conditions the hair well and leaves it lovely and full of body. I wouldn't advise that you get it cut shorter, not if you're wanting to grow it longer. Perhaps as others have suggested, try hair accessories and experiment with hair serums, gels etc.

Treat yourself to some new make up as well and experiment with new colours, cheers me up a bit. What about the colour of your hair? Are you happy with that? I hope you feel better about it soon, and your medical issue is also sorted soon x

takeonboard · 03/04/2012 11:48

Sorry but your story is hilarious, one day you will look back and laugh Grin

You need to find a great hairdressers who will be able to sort it out, go for a consultation first and listen to their ideas. Then only book an appointment with a stylist who comes up with a great style even if you have to see 6 stylists.

Good luck

hello! I did the same thing - cut my own hair and it looked HIDEOUS.
So i went to a hairdresser the next day, who didn't speak much english (I know, I know) and she made me look like a Russian prostitute from the 1980s.
I cried. Refused to pay her. It was all short and spiky at the top, two rats tails down the sides/back and was full of unmanageable layers. Revolting.
So. I googled, and realised the only way out was what others here have suggested. Get the back cut 'into' the head, like posh used to have.
4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZMdhaMF_UzU/S5vWXHhabpI/AAAAAAAAABM/ejtPEuKmLhg/s320/posh-hair.jpg

Don't blow dry your hair, or use mousse. That will jsut give the nasty layers volume which looks worse. If you can dry it relatively flat to your head it will look longer. Use some sort of putty or wax to define the ends and mess it up a bit.
And don't panic too much. It will grow. I promise.

valiumredhead · 03/04/2012 15:07

Oh God you poor thing!

My hairdresser said he loathes it when people do their own hair as it is so hard to put right so my advice would be get yourself to a big name salon and pay megga bucks to get it put right then once it's looking decent you can downgrade.

porcamiseria · 03/04/2012 16:11

LOL chandon, exactly the same advice! been there, got the photos !

DiddyKnockers · 03/04/2012 16:21

Oh I'm glad you're all laughing at me rather than pitying or backing away from me. The people I've told in RL have been great - ExP delivered me to a hairdresser the next day and paid for it to be cut, best friend has offered to lend the money for extensions and mum has bought me a wig - and I am so grateful.

I've just had £50 worth of hair accessories delivered - bands, clips, grips, combs - so I'm going to wash my hair and experiment in a minute. I have to try and get used to my hair like this and accept there isn't a miracle cure.

Thanks for all the advice you've given. I'm going to go back through this thread once I've posted and check all the links.

I dyed my hair black the night I cut it and it love it. My greys show up something awful against it though but I like it because I can measure how much growth I've had. I've not bothered to touch up the roots as I've been hiding my hair under a baseball cap anyway.

I'm going to pass on the suggestion of posting a photo though - sorry Grin

Ah the MN Drunk Haircut.

Bless you, Diddy. Smile

Tyniclogs · 03/04/2012 16:44

I admire your honesty and feel your pain. I bleached my long naturally curly dark blonde hair before Christmas and turned into big bird. I carried on until it was white and then needed a hair cut to get rid of the frizz. I now have a weird asymetric bob and have bleached that so its now frizzy too....with roots. I've now gaffered taped my hands to the table and am waiting for it to grow (typing with my nose).

For the rest of the year I shall be wearing turbans, enormous flowers and all manner of weird scafage to hide the damage and wearing intresting shoes and bangles to divert attention.

I also take comfort from the fact that I am now 40 and completely invisible.

ThatVikRinA22 · 03/04/2012 16:56

it will grow!

i once, at the tender age of 15 had a massive crush on this bloke from Saks in York. He asked me to model for him for a competition! i thought id died and gone to heaven. My hair was dark brown, long and id had it freshly permed 3 weeks before. (this was the 80's - ok?!!)

he unveiled his work of art. i cried. i refused to take public transport home.

he had died it orange and cut it chin length at one side and shaved it short on the other. fucking shaved.
i looked like mick hucknells secret love child. i nearly died. i refused to go to school the next day and instead went to the local village hair dresser who died it brown again and chopped it all off....there was nothing else for it.

i HATED it short and couldnt wait for it to grow.

i dont suit short hair. i have a round face.

just thought id share that so you can see you are not alone in your folly....and it will grow! promise!

i got used to mine in the end until it grew back....it actually wasnt all that bad. as soon as i could get it into a very short bob thats what i did (sort of shaved up the back but at least it looked longer....)

keep going to the hair dresser regularly and as soon as you can get it styled.

bristolcities · 03/04/2012 16:56

WIGS! My best friend had her hair cut in to a Rihanna-esk short back and sides do (it actually looked brilliant) and hated it so took to wearing wigs, she treated them just like fashion accessories that she changed with her mooed and out fit. They looked brilliant and she always looked well groomed. There pretty common place with the black celebs with hard to manage hair.

DiddyKnockers · 03/04/2012 17:12

Tinyclogs and VicarIna Grin.

Right I'm going to be brave and upload some photos. Bear with me, it might take a while. I will remove them when I've had some feedback.

I want to know what looks is best on me. When I get my wig I'll upload a photo of that too.

jifnotcif · 03/04/2012 17:23

I so want to see those photos! But I bet it looks great, everyone's hair is better than mine Sad

I once got drunk the night before my ex took me to a lovely 5* spa in bath and bleached my roots using a hair dye pasting brush type thing. I did it in patches so some of my roots were bright blonde, the rest brown and the main lot of my hair was hilighted. He took me to the hairdressers the next day who dyed it orange and white and I cried and told them I looked like a witch with orange horns, the hairdresser cried too. I ruined my hair for years and also once accidentally dyed it pink so I have total sympathy for you.

I would advise against hair extensions as every time I have had them they have ripped out lots of my hair. Hope that the playing around with it has helped!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 03/04/2012 17:38

I had short hair for years. (think Annie lennox)
It needed to be cut really well.
If it wasnt I would get all funny edgy, sticky up bits.

I was going out with this bloke who was a hairdresser. I couldnt get to the salon and he offered to cut it for me.

Holy FECK Shock. The guy was a hairdresser alright but an untrained Afro Carribean one who had never cut european hair in his LIFE.

As I was very thin and pale at the time I really looked like I had escaped from a Victorian Insane Asylum.

I never saw him again. He legged it from my flat before I had a chance to look in the mirror. Bastard.

ThatVikRinA22 · 03/04/2012 17:39

firstly dispense with the baseball cap.

secondly its not actually that short. You need to go to a really good salon and get it styled.

it could actually look really chic at that length, but it needs styling.

is it me or do you have a natural wave? if so, work with it.
