Trouser dilemma when thunder of thigh and big of bum

Liveinthepresent · 26/03/2012 22:00

My annual struggle - maybe this year with your help I can avoid the sweltering in jeans versus looking like my mum in wide legged linen dilemma.

There must be something else that works.
I am a classic pear - size 12 top and a big 14 below - seriously chunky thighs.
Want easy smart casual wear.

Love these but suspect not for me - ( reviews say tight on thighs sigh )

www.hush-uk.com/loungewear/trousers/vanessa-trousers-concrete.html

Have toyed with Capri styles - ok but never fit brilliantly.

Any ideas ? It would make my summer :)

Watching with interest as I really struggle too.

Dunno, but I'm listening in as well

I like those Hush trousers, but not sure they'll suit us larger thighed ladies

Glittertwins · 26/03/2012 22:09

I've already read that thread with horror!!

AmusantDansLaJardin · 26/03/2012 22:11

I am large of thigh and bottom and find that Planet do really good work style capri pants which look good with wedge sandals. In fact I have bought 2 pairs the same for this summer. I'm a decent 16 btw

AmusantDansLaJardin · 26/03/2012 22:14

oh btw, those Hush trousers would make me look HUGE and squat. I'm about 5.5 and really only suit cut off type trousers which finish around my ankle

Missielovelie · 26/03/2012 22:30

LOL, the title of this thread is really funny. Anyway i struggle with a muffin top, its a shame really as my thighs are slim. I do like my legs especially in skinny jeans but my tummy never fits into the waist of my jeans nicely, its always just a little bit too tight and because of this my jeans always start falling down a bit which is seriously annoying! And I think if you have slim thighs you get a big tummy, and if you have big thighs you get a small tummy, totally unfair as i would prefer to have slim thighs and a slim tum.

mirpuppet · 26/03/2012 22:39

I tried on many hush items and found them quite small -- I'm a 12-14 pear.

Don't know about those trousers in particular but i wouldn't risk it -- unless there is free shipping & returns.

Liveinthepresent · 26/03/2012 23:26

Ok am stepping away from hush website. :(
amusant will investigate planet properly tomorrow -unless you can link?
missie to be honest you are lucky - I have a bit more of a tum post dd too, just didn't mention that as pales into insignificance compared to my other challenges !

Essentially anything with 'tapered' in the description is a no-no!

7/8 length trousers with a little heel, or skinny jeans

Liveinthepresent · 27/03/2012 19:21

Am still looking. Any thoughts on these. Trying to find amusant recommendation..

Live they are the very ones! Although they say 'sateen' they are actually very nice. I also saw some similar ones at White Company today. WC's sizing and cut always come up well on me, and they have a sale on!

FunnysInLaJardin · 27/03/2012 20:46

oops sorry named changed again, I am Amusant!

Liveinthepresent · 27/03/2012 21:57

amusant/funny ( all the same to me!! ) fab thanks will try - planet used to be very generous sizing hope still that way.

Also my normal ' safe' jeans are from oasis - have just seen these which will also try if only to freshen up my colour choices-

Progress indeed :)

How about wide legged trousers - that do not taper! Boyfriend style jeans?

Liveinthepresent · 27/03/2012 23:10

betty experience makes me unsure ...baggy tends to make me just look bigger all round

OP posts:
Ephiny · 28/03/2012 07:25

I would avoid anything tapered or 'skinny' as well - which admittedly doesn't leave you much choice these days!

drywhiteplease · 28/03/2012 08:34

What about straight cut (or skinny) worn with longer tunic style top and ballerinas? This is my uniform for spring/summer...also do skinnies but with bum coverage.I always keep bottoms dark too.
When you are a pear the prob is covering your bun/hips without masking a little waist and making self look huge and squat. I have studied this for a long time.
I look for empire stle tunics that sinch in below bust, jersey is a more forgiving fabric because it drapes and skims, any thing with tie at back will pull in waist, and belts always good too.
When I look around I notice that biggers ladies look better in fitted clothes than trying to hide under a tent which invariably makes them look huge.
Biggest prob (like my sis) is big boobs and big bum combo which is v difficult.

MsTokenIdentity · 28/03/2012 08:58

I'm 5'6", size 10 - 12 on top, small waist, big bum and thighs so classic pear. My tried and tested trousers are, depending on budget: Banana Republic Martinique cut, Jigsaw (but only some cuts. I had one pair from there- sadly worn to rags now - that always led to people asking if I'd lost weight whenever I wore them). Whenever I have a lottery win, I head straight to Joseph. Best trousers I've ever bought.

Hetaera · 28/03/2012 09:23

I have had a quality basics splurge just recently and was really rather impressed with the trousers at Lands End. They even offer hemming/different trouser lengths. Don't be put off by the ones with elasticated waists or the awful pictures! For doing Mum stuff, I have a few pairs of these M&S ones. No pockets but good bottom coverage, loose on thighs and they look smart yet feel like jogging bottoms.

FauxFox · 28/03/2012 09:57

What about going for skirts/dresses instead? Flattering and cool to wear in summer? 50s styles are everywhere and the full skirt gives a great hourglass silhouette, or maxi dresses??

BonfireOfKleenex · 28/03/2012 10:22

I'd go for either bootcut trousers/jeans (in lightweight material) with a fairly fitted, non-tunic style t-shirt or top to show off waist

OR

leggings with knee-length dress (or mid-thigh tunic if your thighs and knees aren't too lumpy)

Skinnies don't work with thunder thighs (ime) unless you can tuck them into chunky boots, which is trickier in the summer. 'Lounge-style' trousers are lovely but not for public viewing.

shoppingbagsundereyes · 28/03/2012 10:54

I am thunder of thigh and voluptuous of bottom - have just bought some fab ankle skimming slim legged trousers in H and M that look great on. And they are only £12.99 summer trousers

shoppingbagsundereyes · 28/03/2012 10:54

?I have got the beige but am going back for navy this week

BettyBathroom · 28/03/2012 11:10

Maybe the wide legged trousers look more slimming if you are fairly tall....they'll be my fall back option this summer as light coloured skinnies are a beast to wear and I have tried 50 pairs on, of varying qualities and cuts.
