Trouser dilemma when thunder of thigh and big of bum

My annual struggle - maybe this year with your help I can avoid the sweltering in jeans versus looking like my mum in wide legged linen dilemma.

There must be something else that works.
I am a classic pear - size 12 top and a big 14 below - seriously chunky thighs.
Want easy smart casual wear.

Love these but suspect not for me - ( reviews say tight on thighs sigh )

Have toyed with Capri styles - ok but never fit brilliantly.

Any ideas ? It would make my summer :)

Try the Logan fit in Banana Republic (on sale for £24.99 at the moment). Also, Monsoon trousers are cut well for big thighs. They have some cotton and linen mix trousers for £50 at the moment. Am tempted to buy them but they might not be smart enough for work.
Reiss have some really nice 7/8 length trousers atm in black and cream. Think they were about £90. They fit so well on the waist and thighs.

Puffykins · 28/03/2012 11:50

Forget trousers. Wear skirts.

Ephiny · 28/03/2012 11:59

I think the wide-leg trousers just need to be not too wide, especially if you're not very tall. The Logan fit ones look good actually.

Thunder of thigh and big of bum here - similar size to you.

I started wearing crops a few years ago and now I love them. My faves are actually some sainsbury's cropped jeans that cost £8, and fit perfectly. If you can find crops that flare out very slightly at the calf, or that have a turn-up, that helps as it balances out your thighs a bit. Also try white stuff, gap, or you could make some by cutting down old jeans that are a good fit.

I like my linen trousers too but it took me ages to find a good fit that don't look too mumsy on me - mine are Kew linen jeans.

Knee-length dress with leggings also works for me, or shorter dress/tunic with cropped jeans - good for flattering the arse.

For the thunder of thigh like me, I like to wear dresses with leggings on underneath that finish just below my knees, saving me from rubby thigh soreness. I ENVY the non meeting thigh peeps in summer who don't have the problem!

BirdyArms · 28/03/2012 14:34

I am thunderous of thigh, bottom only as large as it needs to be to join onto the top my huge thighs. I have just bought GAP khakis in bright green and bright blue. They are tapered and probably supposed to be quite baggy but on me skim my legs all the way down. I am feeling so relieved, didn't think I was going to ever find any trousers again. The sizes are huge which is also good for ones ego!

I am happy in skirts and opaques in winter but have hideous knees so really struggle to find a skirt that doensn't make me feel frumpy in summer. Skirts and leggings is the obvious answer and I like them on others but don;t feel comfortable in them myself.

Wow loads of new ideas thanks everyone - am feeling optimistic will have a proper look and report back.

drywhite you sounds quite an expert on the art of pear dressing I agree baggy stuff not helpful at all.
Really my prob is that I have put on weight ( since having DD Blush ) and so need to be really careful how I dress as just feel really horrid on the days I get it wrong.

fauxfox yes you are right dresses are often easier - have a couple of trusty maxi dresses from last year and a few nice ish work dresses. But am greedy and want nice trousers too!

tokenidentity I had some amazing Joseph ones years ago - I can't imagine they actually do trousers in my size any more ( and budget is more H&M currently!

i generally find that the most flattering clothes for my shape have the sames ort of general shape that I do - fitted to the waist and wide at bottom and hip.

I bought some fab spotty palazzo pants s14 in TkMaxx today. I am big of bottom and hip, short legged( and 6 weeks post partum), these make my waist look v neat.

cocolepew · 28/03/2012 20:36

I got very similar trousers to the hush ones on Sainsburys, and good linen straight leg trousers from Asda (they are Moda the fogey ones Blush) nice though.

cocolepew · 28/03/2012 20:38

I got spotty palazzo pants in Asda (again) I've got loads of compliments on them.

BettyBathroom · 28/03/2012 20:58

YonWhaleFish you can buy anti chafing gel for about £6 in boots - should sort the thighs rubbing together soreness out and you can use it as a face primer too!Smile

BonfireOfKleenex · 29/03/2012 09:16

Another chafing tip - put underarm antiperspirant on the bits of your inside thighs that rub together - it's the dampness (eew) which causes the chafing and rash.

Liveinthepresent · 31/03/2012 19:57

If anyone else is interested I got the planet trousers recommended by funnys in the sale - not arrived yet but fingers crossed.

Oasis cherry crops were a disaster- I have countless pairs of this jean in 14 bought over the years - but of the three pairs I ordered inline to try none fitted. Really annoying!
