who does and who doesn't? I'd love to but not sure I have the nerve. A woman came to school with some on today and looked amazing!!

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 15/03/2012 12:51

I don't like it on people during the day, so I don't!

SparkyMcSparrow · 15/03/2012 12:54

I would never ever go there. I am blonde with pale skin and quite full lips. I am well aware I would look like some sort cheap, half dead hooker Confused

Some people can pull it off though!

therumoursaretrue · 15/03/2012 13:08

I do, quite often. Mind you I am blonde and very pale so not sure how that makes me look Sparky!? :o

I say go for it OP, although it is a look that needs to be worn with confidence. Once you find a good red that suits you then you're all set!

Sandalwood · 15/03/2012 13:11

I got some just for the xmas period, and now I'm having trouble giving it up.

LucyManga · 15/03/2012 13:12

No way. I think it looks wrong on anyone with less than lovely teeth, and mine aren't fabulous. I also have big lips, so genuinely do look lioke a blow up doll with bright lippie on.

SparkyMcSparrow · 15/03/2012 13:15

Possibly like a cheap, half dead hooker? Grin

Or maybe you look fabulous. Grin

I cannot pull it off and I know it! Not saying that no one with blonde hair and pale skin can't though Wink

Hopefully · 15/03/2012 13:17

I do. The trick is getting the right red for your skin tone. Colour analysis (house of colour or colour me beautiful) is a good way to find out, or a good mak up counter assistant.

Oh, and not going too crazy with your make up, and having good foundation.

TheProvincialLady · 15/03/2012 13:18

I have pale skin and blonde hair too. I bought a red lipstick - a relatively sheer one rather than thick dark colour - for a big event last week as it matched my flowers and shoes, but in the end I bottled out despite the colour suiting me in the shop (I thought) and having spent £20 on it.

Smorgs · 15/03/2012 13:22

There was a great article and video on red lipstick and which shades suit which colouring on the Guardian recently - this is the link:

DinahMoHum · 15/03/2012 13:23

i love it. I dont wear it all the time, but i recently bought a rockalily one

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 15/03/2012 13:26

i wear it a lot, need a blue red though as i'm dark haired and pale pinky of skin. have a great one, can't remember brand though. stains for the day, basically.

monkeysmama · 15/03/2012 13:31

The Nars matt lip crayons are great. I have orange and red and they give full but matt colour. They light my face up, and mood. I only wear mascara, concealer, foundation and blusher on red lippy days though.

MooMinCow · 15/03/2012 13:36

I wear MAC Red or Dubonnet on the odd day. I have Asian skin tone and dark hair so don't know if that helps, but keep all other makeup to minimum (just concealer, mascara and sometimes thinest line of eyeliner).

Just depends what I'm wearing, but also good if you want to look polished if pushed for time. I also think you do need a bit of confidence to wear (first few times I felt a bit self conscious, but I don't care if I get second glances from people!)

Sonotkylie · 15/03/2012 13:37

Love it. Have a Bobby Brown one that is supposed to suit everyone and I pat it on with my fingers so it doesn't look to 'done'. In fact, will go and put some on now. Help people to see me in this fog!

mrsebojones · 15/03/2012 20:35

I bought a Clinique red lipstick at xmas and it's a bloody revelation, frankly :)
Had always been unsure I could pull it off or felt too self concious.

I am a medium warm skin tone with highlighted grey dark hair. Hopefully I don't look like a low rent hooker Wink

I've had lots of comments from men and women about how nice I look on days I'm wearing it. I don't wear it everyday though.

therumoursaretrue · 15/03/2012 20:48

I would settle for somewhere between the two sparky :o I will say I get chatted up more often if I wear red lips...either it looks great or I actually do look like I'm on the job!
Which leads to an interesting fact about lipstick! Manchester Uni tracked the eye movements of 50 men and found that on average guys look at red lips for 7.3 seconds and pink for 6.7 seconds. Nude lips only held attention for around 4-5 seconds. Don't ask me how I know these things...I think I have a problem!

Nice link smorgs

coffeeinbed · 15/03/2012 21:16

I find a well chosen red can be more natural and easier to wear than a nude.
I have about six or seven, maybe more. All different, mostly wear Nars Flaming Dust. Daytime.

boogiewoogie · 15/03/2012 21:46

I've just bought Bourjois in Rouge Sur Mesure and tried it on a few times. The first time, I tried it on, I looked like a clown - I do not usually wear lipstick so I'm not very practised. I don't know whether using red lip liner helps it to be honest as I've seen several tutorials for "perfect red lips" that is just too overdone and not even perfect!

Having tried several times after the dcs have gone to bed, I think it does actually suit me but I'm still not brave enough to wear it during the day. I've also bought Bourjois Rose Seduisant and that is more a burgundy/ magenta pink colour which is a good alternative to red lipstick. I feel more comfortable in it as I'm wearing a bold colour but not looking attention seeking iyswim.

Agree though that you need attitude and balls of steel to wear it during the day.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/03/2012 21:51

I bought a No7 limited edition one about 2 years ago (wine red not pillar box) and it goes really well with OPI "I'm not really a waitress" nail varnish.

Dark hair ,brown eyes,light,freckled skin.

cocolepew · 15/03/2012 21:54

Aitch post the name of it I need a bluey red one Please Smile

coffeeinbed · 15/03/2012 21:56

Op, if you need a gentle introduction try a one of the Max Factor felt tip pens.
They are red, but easy to wear.

Claryrocks · 15/03/2012 22:50

Yes second the need for a good blue red one. I had house of colour done and they said red suits everyone if you get the right tone and I'm a blue red apparently. Had forgotten that till I saw that post!

My worry isn't my skin tone but the natural yellowyness of my teeth

therumoursaretrue · 15/03/2012 22:56

Bronze red lippie actually makes teeth look whiter! Especially blue reds.
