As a child of the 80's I can remember the perfume samples you got in the pastic little cases. I think one might have been called Success.
I remember getting a mirror (still have it somewhere) from 19 magazine.
I remeber a plastic red heard with lipgloss from. Just Seventeen perhaps.
Best gifts: Anya Hindmarch pouches from Harpers
I rember when magazines used to give a diary at Christmas! The christmas diary must return!!

I still have the Creation records tape I got free with Select magazine.

It's amazing.

M1ssBerta · 03/03/2012 19:22

DH says in the 80s a magazine, he can't remember which one though - gave away a different version of 'Boy About Town' by the Jam, he thinks it was with 'Pop Art Poem' on a flexi-disc. That was his best.

I used to buy Cosmo in the 90s (when it was good) there would be at least three little sachets of stuff to try out.

mrsmartin · 03/03/2012 20:22

you can still get diaries with things like good housekeeping...
I think glamour do the best freebies...decent full sized cosmetics (if it isomething I like I am not above buying 5 of the same mag.)

used to love just 17 and sugar magazine (and I thought I was very grown up buying more! when I was 11!Grin)

gilmoregirl · 03/03/2012 20:36

oooh Just seventeen plastic items in bright primary colours.

There was a chunky comb that me and many of my friends used in the shower for conditioner for the best part of 20 years - am sure some people must still have it.

Plus small mirror (eitehr just 17 or 19) that everyone used to have in the blazer breast pocket at my high school.

Some of the stuff glamour has given away recently has been great - benefit and clinique no less

openerofjars · 03/03/2012 20:38

I've still got my Just Seventeen pink plastic mirror and use it every day. I think I've had it for 20 years now!

kaumana · 03/03/2012 20:46

I remember that comb too! I loved the perfume samples, one which I ended up wearing constantly was Blase'. Can't remember what it smelled like now but I loved it in the early 80s.

messymammy · 03/03/2012 20:47

I remember the books just seventeen gave away, about 98/99. The diary of a crush serial. God I loved them.

M1ssBerta · 03/03/2012 20:57

Just remembered a Ciate lipgloss in st barts. Best one I've ever owned and can I find another? Can I chuff.

Katybabes · 03/03/2012 21:05

Oooh the 80s! Happy days......

I remember a pink wrist sweatband as a Just Seventeen freebie, we all bought two copies so we'd have one for each wrist. I also remember thinking that getting to the actual age of seventeen was so so far away.....

southeastastra · 03/03/2012 21:06

i remember getting a fake chocolate biscuit in a magazine (teddy bear i think) though i can't find any evidence they did one Grin

M1ssBerta · 03/03/2012 21:09

I had the smash hits sweat bands!!

warmandwooly · 03/03/2012 21:09

Gilmoregirl-the 19 mirror I had was plain back with 19 on the back in silver writing and yes to keeping it in the top of my school blazer.

bluejeans · 03/03/2012 21:33

Creme blusher that I had for about 10 years, and Shaders and Toners (would never have been allowed to buy hair dye aged 13 but different if free with magazine!) Both from Blue Jeans of course :)

bluejeans · 03/03/2012 21:34

Also Duran Duran/Spandau Ballet etc button badges from Smash Hits and No 1, used to decorate school blazer

hippoCritt · 03/03/2012 21:39

A yellow Mizz comb in daily use until I lost it last year, nothing else comes close to its combing ability

boogiewoogie · 03/03/2012 21:45

I remember my Just 17 mirror. It was red plastic. Smashed though a few years later. :(

FoxPass · 03/03/2012 22:27

I remember a red love heart-shaped container of strawberry lipbalm I got free with Just 17, it was with the Valentines issue and called 'The J17 kiss kit'. I loved it and kept it topped up with vaseline for years :)

Agree Glamour do excellent freebies now, the Benefit and Clinique ones were great.

TerraNotSoFirma · 04/03/2012 00:01

The big pink plastic comb! I had that, wish I still did.

RedBlanket · 04/03/2012 00:07

Smash Hits for the song lyrics.

warmandwooly · 04/03/2012 07:07

Fox Pass-yes I had that heart too!

Iv got to comment here! I once got a big pink plastic comb from 'fresh' magazine on the england to Ireland(home) ferry circa '98
it was great even for my mixed race hair, I live in hope that it'll turn up either in
Listowel or here one day lol

LukeWarmMomma · 04/03/2012 08:59

Plastic tubes of cream eyeshadow - usually pearlised (?) light blue, yellow and pink - can't remember the name of the magazine, but would have been early to mid 70's. God, I feel like a real old gal Smile

FunnyLittleFrog · 04/03/2012 09:05

I had the black 19 mirror until very recently. Was great!

The Smash Hits stickers adorn various items I still from the mid to late 80s (think Brother Beyond, Pepsi & Shirlie, Johnny Hates Jazz!)

The best were the tapes that came free with the NME and Select in the mid 90s - first heard Oasis on one of those.

FunnyLittleFrog · 04/03/2012 09:06

Oh, and I had some red plastic clip on earings from a magazine called Hi!

talkingnonsense · 04/03/2012 09:08

Best diary was an Emma bridgewater one with easy living- great size, really pretty- cant buy one anywhere!
