MistyMountainHop · 22/02/2012 10:40

bought some a few weeks ago as i had a bit of a dry scalp and was recommended coconut oil (think it was actually someone on here)

well not only has it completely sorted my dry scalp out, my hair looks the best its ever done. its mega shiny and feels absolutely gorgeous, really silky. it also seems to feel thicker, as if each hair strand is "fatter" somehow iyswim. although i am not sure i am just imagining that bit!

all i have been doing is putting it on my scalp and lengths of my hair the night before i am due to wash my hair (i wash it every 2 days first thing) then tying it into a ponytail

the downside is i look like i have chip fat on my head when i have got it on but it washes out easily in the morning

the stuff i used was an Indian brand from tesco, think its got castor oil in too.

Does anyone know if it's ok to put it on coloured hair? I did it last night, and this morning I feel like my hair looks lighter. Of course I could be imagining it, or maybe I didn't wash it out properly...

MistyMountainHop · 27/02/2012 15:43

pepa i do it every 2 days

violet - it should be fine as its a completely natural product, my hair is coloured and it doesnt have any adverse effects.

I feel like my hair looks lighter
I though that too actually. Only left mine on for an hour or so but definitely noticeably softer and in better condition today. Smile

valiumredhead · 29/02/2012 10:55

They have it in our 99p Store - huge tub of it!

DressDownFriday · 29/02/2012 15:54

Well I went around all the cheap shops today and couldn't find any coconut oil anywhere.

Finally got some of the £6.50 solid stuff from Tesco. I'm going to try it tomorrow. Will plaster my hair with it and then do housework before washing off in the shower.

Twit · 29/02/2012 18:16

Coconut oil makes my hair feel coarser and not good at all, I believe it's something to do with protein, my hair doesn't need it despite being curly Confused
Something elsse to try is egg and oil as an intensoive treatment (olive oil?) smells like mayonnaise and you need to rinse with luke warm water itherwise you get scrambled egg hair. not that I'd know

GeorginaWorsley · 29/02/2012 18:21

I can only find the £6 stuff in Tesco too!
Am loathe to spend that without trial run,IFYSWIM

Twit · 29/02/2012 18:32

Have you got an organic food shop? I found a jar for a couple of £ in our local one. It last for ages as well so works out ok.

NannyR · 29/02/2012 19:15

Waitrose sell it (next to the Bottom Butter) packaged as baby massage oil - it's coconut oil with vanilla, smells gorgeous!!!
I've used it for cleansing and as a body moisturiser for years, will be trying it on my hair tonight as well

GeorginaWorsley · 29/02/2012 20:26

Will try those recommendations,thanks.

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 02/03/2012 01:42

Finally got around to putting this in last night.

Wow. Grin

And needn't have worried about it making my already too-thick hair thicker; it has made it sleeker.

chocolateshoes · 02/03/2012 19:09

got some in the end and only had time to leave it for an hour as I was going out for lunch...but even that has made a difference. Can't wait to have chance to leave it for longer!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 06/03/2012 21:04

Anyone with greasy hair tried it? I wash mine every morning, otherwise I twitch. Grin

Mind you, the last time I leapt with gay abandon onto a MN Oily Bandwagon, it was the bloody Oil Cleansing Method and after a couple of honeymoon weeks, my skin freaked out and so did I, when I realised that the castor oil was encouraging the growth of lush white hairs. Hmm On my face. Hmm

drosophila · 06/03/2012 21:16

It also kills headlice AND their eggs.

I found out by accident. DD had itchy scalp and has always had issues with scalp (cradle cap for years) so I covered her head in virgin coconut oil and left it in overnight. Next day no itch and no itch for weeks. Itch came back so I did it again. Weeks go by and itch returns. You guessed it - I finally saw one of the blighters. So then I was confused - why did the coconut oil appear to have dealt with the lice etc...

Well I googled it and found that it is a common treatment particulary in America and according to research does kill the eggs too. I then used Hedrin and started putting her hair in a pony tail and used coconut oil once a week just in case. No return of the blighters. That was about a year ago.

Also her hair was fab - she is mixed race with a tendency to frizz. I have never got round to doing it to my own hair but I should as I have scalp problems of my own - dandruff.

drosophila · 06/03/2012 21:21

For some reason it has to be Virgin Coconut Oil which is the stuff you can also eat and you can find it in health shops.

Selks · 06/03/2012 21:29

I can see this would work for people with thick or coarse hair, but what about finer hair? Mine goes limp with conditioner so I'm assuming coconut oil would do the same? Anyone got any thoughts?

knitknack · 06/03/2012 21:32

It's amazing - have left it in overnight twice now because of itchy flakey scalp and my scalp is now completely clear... But my HAIR, oh my hair feels soft and sleek like it used to back when I were a girl < preens > (I'm forty this year!). Incredible. I too didn't want to shell out but eventually cracked and spent £10 on Amazon, and thank goodness I did!!

drosophila · 06/03/2012 21:34

I have fine hair so i will try it and report back....

Selks · 06/03/2012 21:39

will look forwards to hearing, Drosophila.

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 06/03/2012 21:39

I makes my (thick) hair all swingy and bouncy (i.e. the opposite of limp) so I imagine it would be just the same for fine hair.

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 06/03/2012 21:40

Swingy and bouncy in a good way, that it, not in a 'life of its own' way. Grin

CagneyNLacey · 08/03/2012 13:33

So do you just sort of coat it on generously on top and thrtough haoir or just use a bit mainly on the length?

AmberLeaf · 26/03/2012 10:30

I love it.

I let my son [15] use it on his face as hes a bit spotty, well! his skin has cleared loads, no more red angry bumps and the scarring from old ones is lessened.

Ive been using it on my face too and my skin looks clearer.

Used it on my hair over night before washing it and it was a really good condition.

I ate some too, was a bit addictive, ended up having a few teaspoonfuls and can report back that if you're consitipated it will help....I wasnt so it didnt help Blush
