Is this too bridesmaid-y for a wedding guest?

I am size 18 and live in black, but that is no good for a wedding, so navy is my compromise.

It has detachable straps, which i will be wearing. Will also be wearing a shrug at ALL times.

long is good for me, so is empire line.

wedding is all day into evening.

I don't want to look like a wannabee bridesmaid - is it ok, or a bit OTT?

You will look like a bridesmaid wannabe I'm afraid

AmazeGosh · 13/01/2012 13:08

oh, dear, I was hoping it would be OK, and that a shrug would tone it down

hopeful

Nice name :)

I think it's nice. As long as the actual bridesmaids aren't in navy you'll be fine.

TimothyClaypoleLover · 13/01/2012 13:19

I also think the dress is really nice and would be fine for a wedding guest. I think the material/style dictates quite a lot in that if it was more satiny and corseted then it would definitely be more of a bridesmaid dress.

AmazeGosh · 13/01/2012 13:37

ooh, one against and two for.

My name is from some weirdy troll thread yesterday - well, I was always going to namechange for a thread where I confess to being a size 18, wasn't I?

any more opinions? Or better dress suggestions?

I like it -don't think it looks too bridesmaidy unless they are wearing similar.

molschambers · 13/01/2012 13:44

No it isn't too bridesmaidy. Esp if wearing a shrug over it.

AmazeGosh · 13/01/2012 13:49

yay, 3:1 in favour feels hand twitch towards debit card

Only thing could be if my boobs dont fit 'in' the bodice, but I can always send it back.

open to all opinions, and suggestions for long wedding guest dresses in dark, fat person fabrics.

ooh, 4:1.

I started a similar thread last summer. Also re a Coast maxi dress. I decided to go for it and didn't feel at all out of place on the day. These styles of dresses are everywhere. You'll not be the only one in a posh maxi.

suburbandream · 13/01/2012 13:51

Definitely not too bridesmaidy, I think it's beautiful Smile

monkeysmama · 13/01/2012 13:52

I quite like it and the colour is lovely. Do you know any of the bridesmaids well enough to check what they're wearing (at least style / colour) I turned up to a wedding years ago in a Ted Baker dress that every bridesmaid in the UK wore that year. It was a different colour but still, I was very Blush

funnypeculiar · 13/01/2012 13:53

Not bridesmaid imo - esp not in navy.

ConfusedGirlSuze · 13/01/2012 14:51

I love it too!!!!!
I want one - just, y'know for everyday wear, haha! x

dexter73 · 13/01/2012 15:00

Bridesmaidy I'm afraid. Nice dress though if you are one!

Ephiny · 13/01/2012 15:05

It's lovely, but you might feel a bit over-dressed as a wedding guest, it looks more like a formal evening dress to me.

I agree it depends on the material, and it's hard to tell from the picture. If it's a lighter, softer fabric, then it might be fine.

shumway · 13/01/2012 15:09

I think it's just right for a wedding guest.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/01/2012 15:18

Too evening dress/bridesmaid dress for me.

notso · 13/01/2012 15:37

You'll only look like a bridesmaid if the other bridesmaids are wearing similar.

I have been to five weddings in the last two years and for three of them I felt incredibly underdressed, one overdressed though another guest wearing a white maxi dress almost identical to the brides took the focus off me, and one just right.

notso · 13/01/2012 15:40

Also I would say it depends a bit on the type of wedding, if it's a summer garden wedding that might look a bit heavy and eveningy, but if it's a winter indoor wedding then it won't look out of place.

pootlebug · 13/01/2012 16:24

Can you subtly enquire what the bridesmaids are wearing? I think you can get away with most things without looking like a bridesmaid wannabe so long as what you're wearing isn't too much like what they are wearing (either in colour or style)

Agree with previous posters that for a winter wedding that has an evening do it's fine. For a summer wedding early in the day not so ideal.

Friendlymum67 · 13/01/2012 16:35

It's lovely and I can't see you looking like a 'wannabee bridesmaid' unless you're carrying flowers!! You can always accessorise with a complimentary accessories. Have you also looked at the shorter dresses??

There are lots of gorgeous dresses on there - I want a wedding to go to!! :)

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 13/01/2012 16:38

How about red?

AmazeGosh · 13/01/2012 19:36

It's silk, and the fabric looks quite light. Really confused about what people do wear to weddings other than nasty lilac jackets aaarghhh...

tethersend · 13/01/2012 19:38

No. Why spend £170 on a dress you have to wear a shrug over?

This is much nicer.
