Is this too bridesmaid-y for a wedding guest?

I am size 18 and live in black, but that is no good for a wedding, so navy is my compromise.

It has detachable straps, which i will be wearing. Will also be wearing a shrug at ALL times.

long is good for me, so is empire line.

wedding is all day into evening.

I don't want to look like a wannabee bridesmaid - is it ok, or a bit OTT?

I think its a really love dress and if you were going to wear in high summer with flat sandals and a small clutch with no shrug - I think it would work as just a lovely maxi dress.

But with shrug and in winter - I do think its a tad too bridesmaidy.

Have you looked at anglomania?

Vi8 · 13/01/2012 20:28

I'm wearing this to a wedding in two weeks

Vi8 · 13/01/2012 20:29

It's a day wedding though, so it's not long

nellie02 · 13/01/2012 21:02

Yes, too bridesmaidy if you're going to my wedding in a month where the bridesmaid might be wearing this dress in navy Grin

breatheslowly · 13/01/2012 21:08

I think it is lovely and sounds just right for that type of wedding. What happened to people having bridesmaid dresses and saying "but you'll get lots of wear out of it at other events"?

BillyBollyBandy · 13/01/2012 21:38

My friend is wearing that dress this month to a wedding and she is the bridesmaid Grin

I would check colour of bridesmaid dresses and style if poss. If they are in knee length raspberry pink you'll be fine.

Sad

ah, fuck it, I'm not going. Too fat to go to a wedding anyway.

Sad don't say that AmazeGosh Sad

I'd never leave the house if I thought like that.

Buy that dress, try it on, and in the meantime find out about bridesmaid colours etc and take it from there.

If your weight bothers you address that separately, but don't let it stop you going out and enjoying yourself. That way madness lies.

Fregley · 14/01/2012 12:39

its vile. youll look like a ship in full sail. get a dress with sleeves

Fregley · 14/01/2012 12:40

agree with weight fgs if we all waited to be a size8 wed never leve the house

just something more fitting would be better

tell us your best bits

tethersend · 14/01/2012 12:41

Why are you not going?

I mean, have you decided not to go or has it been cancelled or something?

ladyasriel · 14/01/2012 12:44

would you hate me if I said as an 18 you could find far more flattering things to wear than that which would only look good on a super skinny girl? Spaghetti straps are only for the very thin and very young IMHO.

Fregley · 14/01/2012 12:44

yup i agree
bet she has ace pins nice hair etc

COME BACK fgs or ill have to go and tidy up

AmazeGosh · 14/01/2012 12:45

Oh, god, i haven't really got any. Even boobs are 'fat' big, not 'nice' big.

need long, dark, dress. empire line good. Sleeves don't matter, as Shrug is my friend.

prints a possibility.

OP posts:
Fregley · 14/01/2012 12:45

when is it?
id say 1. stop eating. 2 set traget date for dress reassesment.
eating isnt making oyu happy - we need to ZAZOOM you up. it will be So worth it.

Fregley · 14/01/2012 12:46

( if boobs bad why empire line?)

tethersend · 14/01/2012 12:47

yy, no empire line- the most unflattering cut IMO

tethersend · 14/01/2012 12:47

Did you hate the dress with sleeves I linked to upthread?

AmazeGosh · 14/01/2012 12:51

fraid so, tethers.

empire line good as stomach appalling.

NewChoos · 14/01/2012 12:52

Does it have to be long? I am size 14 ish, but girl in shop was much bigger in teal and looked fab. I tried the black and purple. Think you can wear black to a wedding as long as accessories are brighter.

Please try this on, it's so flattering and you could wear with a shrug.

NewChoos · 14/01/2012 12:53

Sorry, I meant she had the teal on!

yellowraincoat · 14/01/2012 12:53

"Too fat to go to a wedding" - NO ONE is too fat to go to a wedding. Seriously, no-one is going to be thinking about what you're wearing, they will be looking at the bride. I can't remember what anyone has ever worn at any wedding I've ever been to ever, except the bride.

I'm not sure about that dress. Looks too dark for a wedding and I don't agree that dark is necessarily slimming.

Why not go for something more like this

AmazeGosh · 14/01/2012 12:56

actually, that's nice , yellow. I'm 5'7, so can't wear petit, but that sort of thing, yeah.

I don't think I could wear the ruched one, choos, I need a 'fullish' king if skirt that falls away from my stomach, but thanks.

OP posts:
AmazeGosh · 14/01/2012 12:57

kind

OP posts:
BlastOff · 14/01/2012 12:58

Right. How about changing your expectation of what you want to wear. I agree empire line is not as flattering as people think.

What about gorgeous tunic with great jewellery and smart slim fitting trousers?

Or pencil skirt with lovely top, heels and fab bag?

Or if you're desperate for a dress, a wrap dress will look much better than Empire line.

Any of those sound like 'you'? What are your good bits?
