RIGHT new resolution starting now - I WILL BE more vain - join me??

omydarlin · 18/12/2011 17:28

Anyone want to join me in my New Years Resolution (starting now) to be more vain/groomed/less lazy about feeling and looking great?

I will log on to style and beauty at least twice a week for stylish/beauty/groomy tricks
I will not buy cheap "that'll do " rubbishy clothes any more (well ok but cheap but I have to love them)
I will look after my skin/hair/nails
I will respect my body by giving it lots of water fresh air and healthy food (am doing a weight loss trail thing for work so this should be easier.
I will stop going to work with greasy hair and flaky nail polish or clothes with holes in Xmas Blush

It strikes me that I don't care enough about maintaining my appearance - but conversely I do care when I suddenly catch myself in a shop window looking rough as a dog or when husband compliments me out of the blue because I have bothered to blow dry my hair!

Anyone want to join me for a bit of support or any advice how to become vain will be helpful - strikes me being more vain would be a good thing for me!

Happy new year!

I am starting well, wearing a checked shirt that suits me, have make up on and oil cleansed this morning. I have also mastered the sock bun and have one in now, it is a good compromise when the baby doesn't give me quite enough time to do my hair properly!

Weighed myself this morning, the half stone I put on when pg has gone and I haven't put on any weight over Christmas, thanks to the guzzling gigantic baby who put on 20oz in two weeks.

On to the resolutions...

I will oil cleanse.
I will wear make up most days, even if I am only going to the swings.
I will only buy clothes that make me feel good and I will actually wear them rather than saving them!
I will make an effort to drink enough water and will eat more healthily.
I will collect more pretty necklaces as I see them because I feel more dressed somehow when I'm wearing a necklace that I love!

I'm not making any exercise resolutions for a while yet

Totally with those who have beautifully turned out DC yet are not taking care of themselves. I go clothes shopping for me, but come back with only stuff for the DDs, they are so easy to buy for and it is not stressful!

Loving Vain Club Grin The more the merrier Grin
Well, I had a quiet but nice evening - as I have said before, it has been a torrid year so I wasn't really up for a huge bash anyway. But I did put my best dress on and wore my new red lipstick. Normally I wear very neutral make up so this was a big change for me but I really liked it and felt quite good.
Paying the price of guzzling pink champagne like it was lemonade today though Blush. So am cosy in my jeans and uggs. We have no plans so just a lazy day and H is roasting lamb for supper.
Off to Oxford tomorrow for H's birthday so thinking about what I need to pack to look stylish (and intelligent lol) - so far decided on bottle green high waist skinnies, cream t-shirt top, black cardi and animal print boots for day 1. New lace dress and opaques for dinner - might even go for the red lips again. Not sure about day 2 yet. Looking forward to a child free night and playing Florence way too loud in tha car on the drive there!
Happy 2012 all x

RoyalWelsh · 01/01/2012 12:49

In terms of lipsticks - how do you go about choosing one that suits? I just don't... Understand them :s I jut want one that I can wear everyday

msbuggywinkle · 01/01/2012 13:15

Lipstick...for daytime, go from your natural colour and take it up a notch. So, I have really pale pink lips and am wearing Clinique Rose Taffy sheer lipstick. For going out I would go a step brighter/darker but stay with pink because they suit me.

Hopefully · 01/01/2012 13:32

Royalwelsh it will help if you can work out of your skin is warm or cool toned too. Mine is warm toned so anything fuschia/blue toned looks awful.

SuePurblybilt · 01/01/2012 13:38

"I look at my children whom I take great pains to dress in lovely clothes and think, don't I deserve that too? And I do. Dh reckons I self hijack, part of my general imposter syndrome."

This. I agree x a squillion.

RidingInTheMidnightBlue · 01/01/2012 13:43

Oy! Vain club! Check out the Great Plains sale - big, huge reductions. Grin

RidingInTheMidnightBlue · 01/01/2012 13:45

Oh, and am with the 'I don't deserve it' camp. Not so much in terms of weight, but I often look in the mirror and think 'you can't polish a turd, so what's the point?'.

msbuggywinkle · 01/01/2012 14:16

riding thank you! Just bought this

Not that I have a dress buying problem or anything.

omydarlin · 01/01/2012 15:55

HAPPY NEW YEAR VAIN CLUBBERS!

Wow mrsbuggywinkle love that dress - cannot find anything that is not out of stock that I want :-(

I'm with you all on the "dont deserve it camp" but what are we teaching our children that as Mums "we are not worth it" This morning I was blowdrying and plaiting DD hair and dressing her in suitably cute outfit before I'd even thought about myself. Also terribly guilty of buying lovely outfits for her each season and not me. I do take pride when everyone comments how lovely she looks, how she is always so well turned out etc but what about me huh ? Lol - sheer madness!! Do we want to teach our children that it is ok to have low self esteem ? No it is not bloody ok no moreof this nonsense I tell you!

scarlet76 didnt have that Jumper of yours I wanted in my size in sale - so I ordered another black and cream one but plainer - when It arrived was tan and black but am keeping it anyway goes very well with the mumsnet scarf.

I have a confession I have been using a body scrub as a face scrub for about a month but it works really well and my skin looks great - wouldnt recommend for sensitive skin lol but if anyone is interested its soap and glory flake away which is the best body scrub for its price in the Universe!

I'm doing a trail weight loss thing for research at work that involves having protein shakes and protein bars ( quite an expensive brand and Ive got it all free!) but have noticed my nails and hair are better after only two weeks! Definitely moving to the protein packed day for 2012 (although will try and do it naturally after this stoopid trail thing is over).

OOoh addictedIam 2012 baby?

OP posts:
addictediam · 01/01/2012 16:39

I was coming on earlier to say how I'd failedbon the first day (I was wearing scraggy jeans and dhs biggest baggiest jumper, that only just fits around bump with wet hair tied in a scruffy bun) but I felt so bad I bbh'd my hair, put on some mascara and lip gloss, put on a dress, scarf, wooly tights and decided to go for a walk to get this baby out some fresh air. Had lots of fun at the park watching dh and dd playing while I marched up and down the hill sat and relaxed. And i now feel i can hold my head high and say today was mostly a success!

I've also made a list of 20 goals to helpe look and feel better, some are for when the baby is here (like get back to somewhere between 8.5-9 stone, find a healthy eating plan NOT a diet and go to spin class atleast twice a month, do an exercise dvd the weeks i can't get there because of dh's work) and others are for right now (keep on top of tidying the house, never go out with wet hair, me and dd(s) to be dressed before 9am) now all I need is for this baby to vacate my uterus pronto, I've been pregnant the best part of 2 years, I want to cuddle my new baby and I want my body back. :o

madmomma · 01/01/2012 16:43

Well I had my baby by section last week, and feel it's time to start babysteps towards making myself look human. Can't buy anything new at the mo, and hopefully I'll be shrinking soon, so need to make the best of whatever's in my wardrobe. Tops will be fine, but I think the only thing that'll fit my bottom half at the moment is joggers. Oh and leggings. Would like to wear dresses but can't due to bfeeding. Had my haircut the other day, so that's under control, but I seriously need to wear make up every day - really don't want to look as tired as I feel! So I guess that's the 1st goal for me.
What's everyone doing about having a load of xmas food still lying around? Bin or binge?

msbuggywinkle · 01/01/2012 16:55

congratultions madmomma! re wearing dresses and bfing...I live in dresses, I just do stretchy necklines and a pashmina. We start healthy eating (low GI) on Tuesday when DP goes back to work, I plan on feeding the Christmas leftover food to the DDs. It is mainly cheese!

addictediam · 01/01/2012 16:58

Madmomma I have a dress from we love frugi and a couple from jojo mamn bebe that are designed for breast feeding. Really nice and can be dresses up or down depending on the occasion

omydarlin · 01/01/2012 17:38

dresses like this any good for bfing? Bargainous anyway!

scarlet76 · 01/01/2012 18:00

Madmomma Enjoy your new arrival. What a lovely start to 2012.
Royalwelsh I tend to go for lip glosses for day time - not as harsh as lipstick - choose shades that are similar to your own lip colour. Had to be careful when choosing red lipstick the other day as I felt some shades made my teeth look yellow and they are not really!!!
Going to have a nice hot bath tonight and use the clinique exfoliator that MIL got me for xmas. Then I will be moisturising and getting the nail varnish out for a bit of a home pedi.

addictediam · 01/01/2012 18:02

Yes, for more modesty you could put a vest top under.
The drawstring is great too, as you loose the baby tum you can pull it tighter and it still stays flattering.

If only it was a little longer (and possibly in another colour as I have lots of blue) I'd order it!

Hopefully · 01/01/2012 18:28

Congratulations Madmomma how exciting! hope you're feeling ok and recovering quickly.

I BFed in dresses - I have one gorgeous cashmere one that has a grandad shirt type neckline, and unbuttons quite low, and a couple of wrap dressed that I wore a camisole under and lifted camp up and hocked dress down, iykwim.

I think I may actually order the things in the sales that I want tonight, before they sell out entirely Hmm Grin

madmomma · 01/01/2012 18:56

I love wrap dresses, but don't have any. Will look for several one when not so skint. That h&M one is lovely, and a steal, but it's a fixed wrap so no boob access.

blobtobetter · 01/01/2012 19:19

Can I join please?

I am so rubbish at all the beauty, style and grooming stuff!

I want this year to be the year that I start to like myself and to actually wear clothes that I like rather than baggy stuff that depresses me.

I love the 50s / vintage style of clothes, hair and make up but never do any of it as I feel too fat.

I had a little cry last night as I felt like a hideous monster (vain) but am feeling more positive today.

WisteriaWoman · 01/01/2012 19:38

HI Vainers,
NY has got off to a great start in the WW household.
I"ve been clearing out the junk in my wardrobe - god there is LOADS going to charity / tip..
To help me decide on which clothes to keep DD has been voting on my outfits with cards saying "yes" or "no"!!. Am hoping to paint nails tonight as well. THanks OP for getting us all going on this resolution. I've been looking at the Mary Portas website FAB....
x

verysmellyeli · 01/01/2012 20:10

Well, so reassuring to hear I am not the only one who feels too fat to make an effort but quite right that we should be teaching our children that we matter too! In my case it really does feel like polishing a turd Xmas Grin but I have made A List - and divided it into daily/weekly/monthly/special occasions - I won't bore you with it here, but I have managed to moisturise all over today and Big my hair (usually I am rushing downstairs with wet hair so that DH doesn't have to have all 3 on his own for too long - ridiculous, he is perfectly competent and it is not like I spend all day on grooming. In fact he probably spends more time crapping than I spend grooming.)

So now I have actually put on my exercise clothes and as well as instead of finishing off the chocolate log, I am going to SHRED! Yeah.

And I think I need one decent outfit for the size I am now, rather than buying supermarket clothes until I am a size 12 (like that's ever going to happen) - so I am going to scour e-bay a bit later.

Will keep checking in - it's so nice not to feel alone, and it's not something I really want to own up to in RL - just keep on keeping on there, IYSWIM.

CheerfulYank · 01/01/2012 20:18

I totally agree with what Ohmydarlin said...DS is always well turned out but I just feel too fat to make the effort.

Also I think we have to go by our own styles and what we feel comfortable but smart in. I had a friend who's really stylish go with me and pick out clothes this fall, and I rarely wear them. They just don't feel like me.

I painted my nails last night, just a pale pink. You can't really tell but they do look much better...more uniform or something.

AlpinePony · 01/01/2012 20:28

Total fail this end today, never made it out of pj's. Otoh, spent an hour in the jacuzzi, then massaged bump with bio-oil and whole body massage. Make-up and dress tomorrow promise!
