RIGHT new resolution starting now - I WILL BE more vain - join me??

omydarlin · 18/12/2011 17:28

Anyone want to join me in my New Years Resolution (starting now) to be more vain/groomed/less lazy about feeling and looking great?

I will log on to style and beauty at least twice a week for stylish/beauty/groomy tricks
I will not buy cheap "that'll do " rubbishy clothes any more (well ok but cheap but I have to love them)
I will look after my skin/hair/nails
I will respect my body by giving it lots of water fresh air and healthy food (am doing a weight loss trail thing for work so this should be easier.
I will stop going to work with greasy hair and flaky nail polish or clothes with holes in Xmas Blush

It strikes me that I don't care enough about maintaining my appearance - but conversely I do care when I suddenly catch myself in a shop window looking rough as a dog or when husband compliments me out of the blue because I have bothered to blow dry my hair!

Anyone want to join me for a bit of support or any advice how to become vain will be helpful - strikes me being more vain would be a good thing for me!

I have the angel bebe changing bag, its massive, but with a newborn and an almost ready to be potty trained toddler, i figured I'd need a big bag. and its beautiful and i havent had a nice bag for a very long time, so dh bought it as a 'sorry for getting you upduffed again so soon, I know how much you hate pregnancy and i really am sorry' present for me :o (just for clarification, we're thrilled about the baby, not so thrilled about the pregnancy!)

Today i have done my hair, and moisteriesd my streach marks. I've looked in to spin classes (to help loose the weight and have looked at a few places to get my nails done (they are in such a bad way they need professional help) I just need to get this baby out and the first few hellish blury sleep deprived months weeks out of the way then I can get back to being me :o

thefurryone · 30/12/2011 13:57

Hi everyone, can I join in please?

I'm a long time scruffy slob who really needs a bit of a kick up the rear. I can look nice and polished if I put the effort in I just don't seem to be able to put the effort in consistently.

I have an 8 month old DS and back at work next week, but as I am a PhD student the incentive to not always wear jeans is low. Haven't had my hair done since September & although I have managed to get back to my pre-preg weight, that just still means I have a stone to shift Grin

On the plus side I started clinique 3 step end of October & have kept it up and I always all over body mousturise.

I'm now off to find out more about this sock thing.

corkythecat · 30/12/2011 15:08

Can I come and play too please...

You have all inspired me to stop being so lazy, today I was up, washed, dressed and ready to leave the house by 9am Complete with painted nails, a smart outfit, hair NOT in a ponytail and make up. Not bad seing as I have a 10 week old with a stinking cold and a 4yo.
I am planning to start doing my shred dvd again in the new year, dont need to lose any weight just want to tone up. Plan to drink more water and get back into the habit of having breakfast.

scarlet76 · 30/12/2011 18:22

Have caught the cold that DS had had Xmas Sad
Anyway, had a friend and her DD over for lunch and so was cosy in a jumper dress and opaques.
Did little with my hair today though - hid it under a big hat when I ventured out to supermarket Xmas Wink
Going away for a night on Monday with DH for his birthday - no children!!! Thinking about what to pack as I want to look lovely and have a nice time.

hopefully good news that you and DH are able to set a little aside for yourselves. Have a look through magazines and browse online to see what is in the shops right now and decide on the sort of things you like and need.

Ladies, I have had a little splurge, despite promising myself a frugal 2012 - new blue and black stripe pencil skirt, Orla Kiely Jeanie bag in the sale and a pair of high waist jeans and a dress - both for our trip away Xmas Blush

RidingInTheMidnightBlue · 30/12/2011 18:32

So today I have read Grazia, bought Vaseline rosy lip, tried to buy a sold-out in John Lewis Babyliss Big Hair, and wandered around the sales tutting at poor quality, overpriced tat.

Welcome corky and furry. I don't eat breakfast so that's the next thing to help me look better. I work from home so don't need to make an effort with my appearance there.

Thanks for change bag advice. I'm considering this, but not sure if that's just because it's hugely discounted! WDYR? hopefully I like satchels too - especially from the cambridge satchel co. TKMaxx have these Moroccan Bazaar ones. Perhaps a satchel would be a better bag solution . Probably in tan.

Hopefully · 30/12/2011 22:12

riding I've been eyeing up the Cambridge satchel co too, am finding myself weirdly drawn to the metallic ones, wondering of the bronze one would wear nicely.

Scarlet am envious of your splurge! Am playing around with polyvore to put together a capsule wardrobe wish list.

Welcome Corky and well done on achieving so much with a 10-week old and an older dc too! I am only just managing that now DS2 is 9 months!

I have just shredded for the second day in a row. It is a hell of a lot easier when you didn't give birth 10 weeks ago (as I had last time). Still painful though Wink

Hi Furry - just think, you can experiment with lots of fashion while you work, since you don't have to be suited and booted.

A friend in the States is hunting down some J brand jeans in the sale for me. I am hoping they fit and can form the basis of my spring wardrobe. Now I need to hunt down some skirts.

WisteriaWoman · 31/12/2011 09:15

COunt me in as well. These are great resolutions, I'm going to print them out and stick them up in the bathroom. Thanks
I'm in desperate need of a revamp as 50 is around the corner.
I shall follow this thread closely.
QUestions:
Has anyone tried Origins make up? Is it any good? I need a good foundation.
Can I do this on a budget.? I'm allowing myself a £100 to spend on clothes in 2012
IS it worth doing Color me Beautiful - I just need someone to go through my wardrobe as say that's good / that's dire...

AlpinePony · 31/12/2011 09:39

riding I love the red bag, although I'm such a sucker for a red bag I'd probably praise a plastic carrier! ;) I saw earlier someone saying the bighair was on amazon for 29 quid.

wisteria I suppose the answer to the budget lies in what you've already got in your waedrobe... If all you have is 30 quids worth of primark probably no, if however like me you have waredrobes full of clothes you've never worn you'll probably be ok.

I had a quick look this morning on planet/coast/french connection - all doing good discounts.

I am clean and my hair looks great. Only planning to go to the stables today, but even so a lick of paint wouldn't go amiss and I really ought to paint my nails.

omydarlin · 31/12/2011 13:19

Afternoon all - sorry I have not been around been unwell but see all have been busy vaining - welcome to new members of vain club!

I have no make up on yet but ready to go to the panto with clean swishy hair and my new Next lambswool jumper dress that fits me in a size 14!!! Actually these horizontal stripes are not half bad for curvy girls I always thought was supposed to be opposite.

I have some excellent news and a good target for lovely body/hair/skin/nails - my youngest sister is getting married June 2013 on a Greek Island - am so friggin excited for her. I have already been looking at dresses !

I am on a budget until March - but luckily enough I live near one of those outlet village places something may just find it's way into my bag they have a FCUK store which is very good (skirts /dresses/shirts £10) and a Hobbs which isn't bad. They also have a Karen Millen. I would reccomend these outlet places to anyone on a budget they are great - I always find something!

I have been trying! I used my epilator yesterday so now have smooth pins and pits. I also dried my hair using the big hair and slapped on some garnier bb cream, mascara and lip gloss. Hair was still nice today so slapped on some slap and look fairly respectable two days in a row!

Just need to pop this sprog and I can start doing the shred DVD which arrived yesterday!

scarlet76 · 31/12/2011 15:17

Hope you're feeling better omydarlin - hard to be vain when not feeling your best.
Is the jumper dress the oatmeal with black stripes? Had that on yesterday and LOVE.
So what do we all have planned for tonight? H and I will be home alone with DC in bed. I will still be getting dressed up though!! Planning my black lace dress, opaques, gold shoes and shit hot new red lipstick I just got from Clinique Xmas Wink

Hopefully · 31/12/2011 16:38

We are having friends with their DS over for dinner. Plan is to have starters with the kids then send them to bed and crack open wine and cook main course. I am relying on my beautiful red lipstick to glam up my look as I am wearing a fairly casual blue top and grey/blue/teal tartan skirt that i've had for six years.

I am umming and aaahing about a biker jacket I bought today. It's beautifully made, but not sure the colour's perfect. Luckily one of my dinner guests is a House of Colour consultant-to-be so will help me decide.

Grin at 'vain club'. I like it.

RidingInTheMidnightBlue · 31/12/2011 18:49

Happy new year, vain club Grin.

I'm in PJs and on the lemsip, but do have good hair having just bought a babyliss big hair...

As for bags, am going for a satchel, but not til my bday in a couple of months . Gives me time to work out which colour I need want.

HappyHippyChick · 01/01/2012 02:10

Happy new year everyone. I babysat for my sister as my dh always works NYE and I can't drink! Hope you all had a glamorous and good night

Hopefully · 01/01/2012 06:49

Happy new year! Have been up since silly o'clock with DS2, who has no appreciation of the 1am champagne drinking I was enjoying.

Sadly, biker jacket is off back to the shop. Boo. If anyone spots a gorgeous brown leather one for under £200, please link!

philmassive · 01/01/2012 07:03

Is it too late to join?

I am shocking. Need to lose a fair bit of weight but it's not just that - I need to do lots of things from iron my clothes to use some hand cream. Would really like to join you!

Hopefully · 01/01/2012 07:25

It's never too late to be vain phil Grin - welcome aboard!

My New Year's Vain resolutions (since I never actually did any):

  • make the most of my House of Colour style consultation day in a couple of weeks
  • plan a capsule wardrobe for late winter/spring and actually order some new clothes
  • wear at least a dash of make up every day
  • get a haircut (haven't had one for somewhere in the region of 15 months Blush Blush Luckily I appear immune to split ends!)
verysmellyeli · 01/01/2012 07:29

Happy New Year Y'All. Lurking for a while but must join. Back to work in 10 weeks after DC3 (5 months) and look and feel like crap. DC's always better turned out than me - because they're worth it etc.!

Need to lose weight, sort hair, do nails, wash face, use face creams not just buy them, shave legs, wear decent clothes (still exclusively BF'ing - need to wean DD but that's a whole other thread!) and generally be bovvered.

So today, I will [drumroll] - put make up on and wear tights. Ta da!

Chubfuddler · 01/01/2012 07:36

Haven't read thread fully but I am in, had a wake up call when I was heavily pg and looking at old photos and cousin's husband said with obvious surprise "god look at you here, you look hot!" I burst into tears. He was mortified and hadn't meant any offence but I haven't forgotten it. So dd is now five months and it's new years day so.... This year I will have a haircut every eight weeks, get eyebrows find regularly, buy better clothes, oh lose three stone obviously Blush

I look at my children whom I take great pains to dress in lovely clothes and think, don't I deserve that too? And I do. Dh reckons I self hijack, part of my general imposter syndrome.

Chubfuddler · 01/01/2012 07:37

Didn't even notice post below - snap on the DVD being worth it. Must bd more common to think like this than I realised.

philmassive · 01/01/2012 09:27

Oooh, great, thanks. I have so many things I need to do it's unbelievable! In no particular order:
Handcream and moisturiser generally
Lose weight - is the shred hideous? I have about 6 stone to lose Blush and I don't want to kill myself!
Shaving pits and legs - never get them out so don't bother but I must do it for ME
Buying clothes purely because they fit, not because I like them or they're flattering
Getting my roots done before they are 3 inches long
Drinking water
Taking care of nails and brows
Ironing clothes (and putting them away properly Blush)
I will go back to wearing jewellery (stopped with ds's, but the youngest one us 5 now so really should have pulled my finger out by now)
Just want to look more polished really. I have a beautiful friend who puts me to shame as she always makes an effort, I will watch and learn from her.

Someone below (sorry, on phone so can't scroll) asked about smoothing shampoos - Lee Stafford do one (in boots) which is fab. I am useless and can't remember the name but if you look for the range (barbie pink bottles) you will work it out easily from the name. Plus it smells gorgeous.

CheerfulYank · 01/01/2012 09:41

I hate the shred but really must do it. Sigh....

Chub I am the same, I always make sure DS looks good in nice clothes, always keep his hair trimmed neatly, etc, etc, while I go about in jeans and sloppy tops and ponytails.

I just don't feel comfortable in "smart" clothes. I know a woman who wears more "outdoorsy" type stuff and she always looks lovely because it's her personal style, and she has great hair and so on. Maybe I can shoot for that look.

RoyalWelsh · 01/01/2012 10:47

Happy New Year Vainers!

Somebody up thread said something about wondering why they don't think they're 'worth it' enough to make the effort with themselves when they do with the DCs. I can definitely identify with that, albeit in a roundabout sort of way. I need to lose about five stone really, and all I can think is - what's the point in making effort when I'm this fat? I have a real problem with body image - when I was 8.5 stone (am 5'8) I thought I was huge and then my circumstances changed and I put on about 7 stone in a short space of time and barely noticed on many levels, so I find it hard to judge what I look like in the mirror, IYSWIM? That, and I think on a very basic level I just believe that I should be ashamed of how fat I am so any attempt at looking nice is something to be laughed at.

I am trying to change my attitude though.

On Friday I made a real effort - babylissed my hair, put on a nice dress, nice shoes and tights, put make up on and jewellery although I then ruined it by donning my favourite duvet of a shapeless kneelength cardigan to see the ILs and ExP (long story) kept saying how lovely I looked. And I did feel sort of more listened to. I enjoyed it!

Chubfuddler · 01/01/2012 10:52

Yes you're right I do think "is it worth it" while I am over weight but whether or not I lose weight meanwhile I have to live with how I am now, so I might as well try and look good.

I put face cream on this morning. And make up. Even lipstick. I havent worn lipstick for, ooh about two years.

Hopefully · 01/01/2012 12:21

I definitely get that 'it isn't worth it' feeling too. I don't have a huge amount of weight to lose, but something about not being the weight you want/think you ought to be makes you feel like any effort is pointless.

Since I'm returning my biker jacket I am having fun perusing the sales to see what I might replace it with...
