RIGHT new resolution starting now - I WILL BE more vain - join me??

omydarlin · 18/12/2011 17:28

Anyone want to join me in my New Years Resolution (starting now) to be more vain/groomed/less lazy about feeling and looking great?

I will log on to style and beauty at least twice a week for stylish/beauty/groomy tricks
I will not buy cheap "that'll do " rubbishy clothes any more (well ok but cheap but I have to love them)
I will look after my skin/hair/nails
I will respect my body by giving it lots of water fresh air and healthy food (am doing a weight loss trail thing for work so this should be easier.
I will stop going to work with greasy hair and flaky nail polish or clothes with holes in Xmas Blush

It strikes me that I don't care enough about maintaining my appearance - but conversely I do care when I suddenly catch myself in a shop window looking rough as a dog or when husband compliments me out of the blue because I have bothered to blow dry my hair!

Anyone want to join me for a bit of support or any advice how to become vain will be helpful - strikes me being more vain would be a good thing for me!

Wtf is a sock bun

RidingInTheMidnightBlue · 20/12/2011 11:10

I'm in. Am SAHM to 10mo DD. Interested in fashion and style, but struggle with time and money. I work PT too, but from home, so no incentive to scrub up there either.

I also need to know what a sock bun is, as I'm guilty of the low ponytail Grin. I do, however, avoid fleeces, bootcut jeans and mum boots. I've not had my colours done, but have self-diagnosed and no longer wear white or black, and at least think about colours. This must be better than nothing, but am saving to get it done professionally.

I try to:
Wear tinted moisturiser, mascara and bright lipstick every day (am corpse-like without lipstick)

And each week:
Hair mask / hair oil (using CW hair healer which I like)
Eyebrows
Tash
Teeth whitener
Nails
Blackhead remover

RainboweBrite · 20/12/2011 11:57

I'm in! Having my hair coloured and cut tomorrow for the first time since July, so am going to try to go every 12 weeks from now on. Also having a manicure on Friday, and as it's only £12, don't I deserve to do it once a month?
I might even start using night cream every night and moisturising every day, although that might be a step too far!

RidingInTheMidnightBlue · 20/12/2011 12:03

Oh yes, am also going to wear my contact lenses at least once a week, instead of glasses.

natashakaplinkyplop · 20/12/2011 12:35

If you do a search on here, there's a few threads about sockbuns.

You basically cut the toes off a sock and roll it up to make a donut type shape, then put your hair in a high pony tail, dampen the ends, then put the sock at the end of your hair and roll it up to make a bun.

It's really comfy to sleep in and gives natural waves in the morning.

There's a link somewhere to a YouTube film of a girl explaining it.

Sorry I can't link as i'm on my phone and in the middle if dying my roots.

natashakaplinkyplop · 20/12/2011 12:38

of not if...

lynniep · 20/12/2011 12:41

I'm trying quite hard to be more vain now I've reached the age where I think its appropriate to give a sht, but I find it a bit tiresome. I NEARLY manage to wear makeup for work every time I go in. I almost ALWAYS remember to accessorise with a nice necklace and/or earrings. However I neglect to do anything with my hair but stick a couple of kirby grips up top to stop it falling in my eyes, so that is possibly a bit neglectful. I'm getting better at remembering to moisturise though. I've started going to a beautician to get waxed (on the face -I'm not forking out for my legs!) since August. Unfortunately I've just put half a stone back on after dropping quite a lot, and I feel a bit crp about it, therefore reverting to type on the clothes front i.e. cover it all up. I need to get back on the wagon!

rainydaysarerubbish · 20/12/2011 14:30

Count me in. I am on maternity leave with 8 month old dd and was started to look a mess as clothes became such an issue post pregnancy breastfeeding nothing fits etc. Now have stopped breast feeding so have started buying the odd thing

Today I put on make up, half attempted a hair style dressed fairly nicely and then probably ruined it all as I put on my uggs as I left the house! (I know but so warm and cosy in this weather!)

Tonight I plan to paint my nails.

After Xmas I am planning to get a few smart work dresses in the sales for when I go back in April (I will not wear my my old black trousers and cheap bobbly tops!)

And considering re doing my highlights - have almost grown them out and love not being a slave to the hairdresser but have concluded I look better with blonder hair.

addictediam · 21/12/2011 05:36

despite not planning on going out yesterday, i eneded up in the hospital! but at least i had mascara on, had my hair done (even if it was wet because i didnt have time to dry it) and was wearing a dress, so felt pretty good about myself, which is no easy feat considering i'm 7.5 months pregnant and feel like a beached whale most of the time!

I'm now asking round friends for a recommendation for a mobile hairdresser, i havent been since being 12 weeks pregnant with dd (who is now 13 months old!) and figured it would be easier getting someone to come here than having to get there and entertain 2 babies whilst having my hair cut!

MarchelineWhatNot · 21/12/2011 06:14

I'm only one small step away from a low ponytail.

Oh dear. I'm already there Blush.

scarlet76 · 21/12/2011 06:28

I love reading this thread! I am 35, mum of 2 and work full time. Had a bit of a torrid year and am determined to focus more on me in 2012.
so, having lost some weight and having kept it off, I had a wardrobe clearout. Definitely suggest this. I treated myself to some well fitting jeans, a new winter coat, a jumper and a dress. I am aiming for a wardrobe of mix and match separates.
I do wear make up most days. Clinique moisture surge tinted moisturiser is very good. As I am short of time, I stick to lip glosses, a little blush so I don't look like I have been dug up and a little mascara.
I have highlighted bob hair. I am going to try and get to the hair dresser more regularly to keep it in check. Also had my eyebrows threaded in the summer and the results were great. Must get this done again. Nails I keep short and pretty with very natural polishes.

omydarlin · 21/12/2011 10:01

WELL welcome everyone ! We have been busy ! It seems the general consensus is we are all so distracted and busy with everything else that we are forgetting to take care of ourselves . Achievements this week so far for me is having half decent hair (rain had been ruining this) painted nails and groomed eyebrows - oh and clothes without holes in them! I also filled my eyebrows in the other day - I did not like until I did my eyes - wasn't bad at all then :-).

What is everyone planning to wear / do you with your hair nails Christmas day?

msbaublestwinkle · 21/12/2011 17:27

I have achievements to report!

After realising that it has been five years since I bought myself any clothes that I really love I hit the ASOS sale this morning and bought some beautiful kick flare jeans, a great red blazer and a lovely 70's style dress. The jeans and blazer don't go with each other but as I need to buy everything, starting with a couple of things that I really love gives me, erm...somewhere to start!

And I blow dried my hair this morning. I am impressed with myself given the presence of the newborn!

Couple of questions - does anyone have any recommendations for tinted moisturiser that will not cause terrifying things to happen to my very sensitive skin?

Also, I need ideas for what to do with my hair. It is currently just below my shoulders, it is naturally black and very thick and quite wavy when not blow dried. I want to keep it long enough to plait (we camp and festival a lot in the summer). Any brainwaves?

Pancakeflipper · 21/12/2011 17:30

Yes I will join you.

I am going de-hair myself more regularly. I am going to tend to my unruly locks and they will be dyed and become glossy envious locks.

i am going to buy a silky short nightie and buy gorgeous underwear and put the PJ' bottoms and vest tops to one side.

Pancakeflipper · 21/12/2011 17:31

Oh and I am going to learn how to walk in heels.

And apply make up so I don't have the 'natural look' I want glam tart look ( not for the school run, for wine bars)

scarlet76 · 21/12/2011 20:22

Msbaublestwinkle I really suggest trying Clinique moisture surge tinted moisturiser. Any Clinique counter will give you a sample to try before you buy. It's not cheap but, hey, we're worth it Xmas Wink

omydarlin we are taking DC oop north to my home town for Christmas and I have been making a list of what I will wear each day that we are there - rather than just chucking anything that is clean into the case and making do.
So here's what I have got:

Christmas Eve this - with thick black opaques and leopard print flats

Christmas Day this - again with think black opaues and sky high bling gold heels

Boxing Day I will be in my trusty opaques again with fluid black shorts and a cream bow fronted top.

I am not comfortable wearing colour and for years I tried to force myself to wear it. I was nagged by my mother who loves a good pink!! I feel so much better now I just stick to things I am comfortable in. Pleased to feel prepared about what I will wear this year rather than just chucking whatever is clean in the case and making do!! It has been a tough year and feeling good about what I am wearing is helping me feel better about life in general

scattyspice · 21/12/2011 20:32

What's a 30 day shred?

omydarlin · 21/12/2011 21:28

Well done Msbaublestwinkle I was a bit worried about you ! Hit those sales and get yourself kitted out ! scattyspice 30 day shred = mild form of torture Exercise DVD by biggest loser 's trainer Jillian McKeith. I have a copy gathering dust I may dig out to donate to someone

Scarlet76 how weird whilst previewing the Next sale was considering buying both of those on Thursday night during my slot - will definitely get the Christmas Eve dress!

omydarlin - In my opinion, my humble opinion, I could get to like Wendy. I am going to be lifting myself up an inch in my heels to check the pitch is right ( once I buy some). Follow me, heel to toe, heel to toe...

Hopefully · 21/12/2011 23:05

Yay for taking more care of ourselves! I have managed to apply make up every day this week Shock

I have also managed to wear the slightly-more-stylish half of my wardrobe all week. It's a long way from cool, but at least not actually fraying. Am determined to overhaul my wardrobe a bit in 2912 - have a style day booked with House of Colour in mid-jan, which should help.

I am hoping to wear my treasured Brora cashmere dress for Christmas day, but worried my cousin's house might be too hot, and don't really have a back up. Eek!

Hopefully · 21/12/2011 23:07

scatty 30 day shred is v effective - not exactly for weight loss, but for toning and strengthening, which makes you look and feel much better all over.

NatureAbhorsAHoover · 21/12/2011 23:12

scatty - sorry can't do links right now but try googling it if you don't know what it is!

NatureAbhorsAHoover · 21/12/2011 23:17

sorry if that sounded snarky.. I didn't mean to be nasty, just got a BFN and if you ask me what that means I will stab you with something sharp and pointy. With all kindness, please go and google it Sad
