RIGHT new resolution starting now - I WILL BE more vain - join me??

omydarlin · 18/12/2011 17:28

Anyone want to join me in my New Years Resolution (starting now) to be more vain/groomed/less lazy about feeling and looking great?

I will log on to style and beauty at least twice a week for stylish/beauty/groomy tricks
I will not buy cheap "that'll do " rubbishy clothes any more (well ok but cheap but I have to love them)
I will look after my skin/hair/nails
I will respect my body by giving it lots of water fresh air and healthy food (am doing a weight loss trail thing for work so this should be easier.
I will stop going to work with greasy hair and flaky nail polish or clothes with holes in Xmas Blush

It strikes me that I don't care enough about maintaining my appearance - but conversely I do care when I suddenly catch myself in a shop window looking rough as a dog or when husband compliments me out of the blue because I have bothered to blow dry my hair!

Anyone want to join me for a bit of support or any advice how to become vain will be helpful - strikes me being more vain would be a good thing for me!

I suppose so...

(She says sat with hair drying in a frizzy mess.)

addictediam · 18/12/2011 17:47

I will join you, I'm a 24yo mother of (almost) 2 and have really let my appearance go since getting pg with dd. I feel frumpy and old. I quite liked the look of yhe 'princessing' thread, but its all too much faff for a beginner!

I'm planning on blow drying my hair every day, putting at least mascara on in the morning, getting dressed and showered before 9am and finally wearing clothes that I feel good in, not just saying oh dd is only going to snot/be sick/wee on me I'll stick to joggers, or old falling apart jeans.

I think I need to be alittle more vain!

omydarlin · 18/12/2011 17:52

Yay welcome natashakaplinkyplop and addictediam yes we must spend more times on ourselves more but must also arm ourselves with the knowledge imparted on this thread for ways to looked groomed more easily!!

I've just been and blow dried my hair. I'll try and remember to put it in a sock bun at bedtime.

I have an almost 9 month old and I need to stop making excuses and lose that last half a stone that will get me back where I started. Plus i'd like to lose a little bit more.

And be more groomed.

And wear make up every day.

And... And... And...

I'll shut up now Blush

addictediam · 18/12/2011 18:09

Yes this section is great for tips. I'be already learned how to curl my hair with a sock and invested in a babyliss big hair and found many dresses and outfits that I want to buy when I've had this baby

omydarlin · 18/12/2011 19:03

I have painted my nails today and purchased some lovely foundation (Bourjois healthy mix) I can't remember the last time I spent that much on foundation and it's the mutts ! Drunk lots of water too.

Am about to go and plan my outfits for the week/weekend and decide what needs washing (or sewing) . I must try this sock bun thing - I tried it with a normal bun ring but not sure if it worked ok or not. I have naturally curly hair anyway but i like the wavy look better.

Babyliss big hair - read about that and bought it for MIL birthday she was chuffed to bits thanks to mnetters but my hot air styler seems to be blowing cold air atm lol!

New look have some lovely jeggings in that make me feel a bit smarter than jeans iyswim they are nice and dark, can look v smart with heel boots - wash v well with out losing shape and blobs of food can just be wiped off magic perfect weekend wear for me - must invest in a black pair ! But strikes me could be toddler friendly too.

I want someone to make me wear makeup! I'm nearly 44 and last wore it on my wedding day Blush I just don't know HOW so have never bothered. But now I'm getting wrinkly and USED looking..:(

I'd also like to smarten up a bit.. I'm slim and could be tidied up a bit but work in a jeans and t shirt type job with children so am a bit limited.. can't wear dresses to work.

I'm also growing my hair long again..what's a sock bun?!!?

TarquinGyrfalcon · 18/12/2011 19:55

OP, you could be me.

About 6 months ago I realised that I make no effort at all with my appearance and all my clothes were just stuff that I had bought thinking 'that'll do'

I've started to make more of an effort, lost some weight, bought some new clothes and I feel much better about myself.

Your paragraph about catching sight of yourself was me - in work oneday I thought 'who is that dumpy frumpy woman' - it was my own reflection.

I'm not wearing make up, but that might be the next step

omydarlin · 18/12/2011 20:07

Oh thank you TarquinGyrfalcon there is hope for me yet feel inspired too . I hate summer with a vengeance so difficult to dress for. With the make up thing ( this goes for you too Medusa) I would suggest starting small - tinted moisturiser , lancome juicy tube typey things, mascara think sheer but pretty and build up - I also love watching make up tutorials on youtube they are very helpful. As I am mixed race i find magazines don't cut it as the colours are always wrong!!

I've recently bought Lily Lolo mineral foundation and am having fun with it in the morning. Trying with eye make-up but think I will give up, just looks ridiculous. So will stick with foundation, mascara and lipstick.

Have heard of someone who does gel nails, might approach her to do mine, although not sure cos she's still quite slow and I don't have the time to spare unfortunately.
Having hair cut tomorrow, thinking of colouring not sure whether to go lighter or stay the same darker. Will re-instate fringe again though.
Clothes endless nightmare but nothing more time and money couldn't fix.

TarquinGyrfalcon · 18/12/2011 21:12

Oh no - now you think I am all groomed and lovely... when I am only a work in progress.

The main things that have made a difference are losing some weight, having a huge wardrobe overhaul and drying my hair so it doesn't look like a birds' nest

I gave away about 80% of my clothes to the charoty shop and since then I have only bought things that I love. Theoretically this means I have a lot less to wear, but I realised I was only wearing a few items before and I didn't even like them.

I've also been cleansing and moisturising my skin on a regular basis and I think it does look better.

I'm trying to pluck up the courage to have my eyebrows done next

abigboydidit · 18/12/2011 22:01

I'll join in! DS now approaching 7 months and my confidence is in my boots. Where do I sign & what do I need to do?

DownyEmerald · 18/12/2011 23:06

I'm in, this year has been a bit of a watershed year;

I've finally done something about the extra inches since dd was born (she is nearly 6 Xmas Blush), not lost much but what there is is more toned and I feel so much better about myself.

I've discovered blow drying my hair so it's straight and not a cow-licky mess.

I've decided to stick to mainly buying the colours I love, so my clothes aren't so random. And not buying the 'it'll do' items.

And I've bought some leggings (I'm 40ish so I used to live in them 20 years ago, but have a different figure now!).

For next year I want to do something about my skin and teeth.

vinegarpuss · 18/12/2011 23:36

I'm in !!

1st step today, the Daniel Field haircolour for grey hair
tomorrow - waxing my gorilla legs - not had them done since October
(mortified smiley)

madmomma · 19/12/2011 00:55

I'm in. I look like a mormon wife Sad. I'm only one small step away from a low ponytail. It may be a long, hard road for me, as I'm having a DC3 on Fri and it'll be my 2nd baby in 2 yrs. I dread to think what I will resemble physically afterwards. Probably something out of national geographic or planet of the apes. Luckily I do know how to put make up on. The body, however...

Hopefully · 19/12/2011 07:01

Just dipping in with my complete lack of wisdom to say hooray that there are others like me! DS2 was born in March and I have finally got down to a semi-sensible weight (within 10lbs of my pre-preg weight) and am finding the time to pay myself a little bit more attention. My top tips tips (based on my vast experience of being stylish and well groomed Hmm Grin ) are:

  • get your colours done. Seriously. Even if you buy pretty cheap clothes it will pay for itself in a year or so, and means that all your clothes will flatter and match each other, so it's impossible to look quite so scruffy
  • foundation/tinted moisturiser, mascara, blusher and lip gloss every day. Keep a sheer lip gloss/tinted balm in your bag so you can reapply without a mirror whenever you want. I have a couple of claims tinted lip balm/glass things an hey are lovely.
  • 30 day shred. It's horrible to do, but really tones everything and makes clothes look better
  • lurk on S&B boards for some idea of what is considered acceptable.

Ummm, that's the sum total of my style wisdom Blush

addictediam · 19/12/2011 07:06

Madmomma, I'm not sure how you ment that comment, (what does a 'Mormon wife' look like?!) But you should probably know I am a 'mormon' (or a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). I can only imagine you ment it in a derogatory way, and am slightly offended.

But only slightly as dc2 is due in Feb (2nd baby in 2 years) and probably do look like a Mormon wife!

andaPontyinaPearTreeeeee · 19/12/2011 10:34

I'll join please! Started my first proper job in summer, it's customer facing and now I have started to feel the crushing "I look crap in everything" feeling in the mornings.

I am 25 with 2 DCs and I feel soooo frumpy. :(

worldgonecrazy · 19/12/2011 10:56

This is what I do to make myself feel better: 30 day shred, eyebrows waxed/threaded, free make over at a beauty counter and some new eyeshadow, hair dye and some good jeans. I've also learned a few hairstyles which mean that I don't have to wash/blow dry my hair everyday because it's too much of a faff, so I can do variations on pony tails, buns, french twists and french plaits.

I found the years between 25 - 30 the hardest in terms of style. I looked in the mirror one day and saw someone in mum jeans (even though I wasn't a mum!) and a baggy sweatshirt and something snapped inside. Since that day I have always treated myself to a decent and flattering pair of jeans.

natashakaplinkyplop · 19/12/2011 15:35

I sock bunned last night, so my hair's been nice today.

Just ordered some argan oil for my hair and some eyelure eyebrow/lash tint.

I had my hair cut last Friday, so does that count as 3 things?

And I managed to put mascara on before I left the house today :o

msbaublestwinkle · 19/12/2011 18:43

I am in! Although probably only erratically as DD3 is newborn.

I'm a 27 year old mother of 3 and having dug out my non maternity clothes the other day I have ONE pair of trousers, and about three tops. None of which I like. The clothes situation is pretty desperate!
