Blimey all these stories of nursery/PTA etc makes me shudder - makes mental note NOT to offer to do such things :)
BTM - same boring convo re ds's literacy scores (v. poor), reading/spelling age of 12, verbally very strong, but doesn't come out on paper. We have put some strategies in place so I am hopeful going forward........(well until the next parents evening anyway :)

Dp emailed me yesterday to say he had so much work to do he could cry (very stress - unlike him), my response was 'prioritise, delegate, defer and sod it'........
I have three days and about three weeks worth of work to pack in..ho hum.

bigTillyMincepie · 09/12/2011 10:55

OK, BD, so spelling is good? If both reading and spelling are that strong, unless he i scoring particularly hgh for say maths/science, like 2 levels above, I wouldn't think it is dyslexia. Is it the organisational aspect of writing that he struggles with?

Maybe your DP needs organisational help too?Grin

herbaceous · 09/12/2011 11:08

Ah yes - the four Ds: do, delegate, defer, dump.

I was thinking of starting a blog, about what it's actually like to try and be part of the 'Big Society', and why it's never going to work. Which in summary is: if I wanted stress, work and sleepless nights, I would get a job and at least be paid for it.

Stropperella · 09/12/2011 11:13

if I wanted stress, work and sleepless nights, I would get a job and at least be paid for it

Now herbs, can you get that on a placard and go and stand outside No. 10, please? Grin

Blackduck · 09/12/2011 11:28

BTM - okay he's in year 4. He has reading/spelling age of 12. His maths is level 4 (can't recall whether it was c or a - certainly wasn't b...) Science he was level 3 at the end of last year. I personally think a couple of things are happening - 1. its all going on in his head, and then he runs out of time and thus we end up with crappy 'and then I woke up' endings 2. he gets bored 3. he has a tendancy (from his father) to do as little as he can get away with....

Oh I like the 4 D's Herbs.....
Yes, off to No.10 Herbs.....

Stropperella · 09/12/2011 11:31

I have made a horrible error. I have become an active participant on Facebook. This is something I swore I would never do. But then dd (obviously) wanted to join so she could witter pointlessly with her friends every evening, so I felt it necessary to get on to keep an eye on her. Jeez, how very weird it all is. The people I (unwisely) looked up from school seem to all be in the "riches beyond my wildest dreams" bracket, so I now keep getting "friend" suggestions from hedge fund managers in HK. Holy crap. I think I should give this up now before I become v. depressed. Note to self: there was a good reason why you aren't even on Christmas card terms with these people...

Blackduck · 09/12/2011 11:33

Oh Stropps I hate FB....... If I am depressed that could drive me to suicide....

Stropperella · 09/12/2011 11:36

I know, Blackduck. I really, really shouldn't have done it. Still, no one can force me to log on. And I just won't look at the photos demonstrating that money does seem to ensure you age rather more slowly.

Stropperella · 09/12/2011 11:41

BTW, Blackduck, do you think it could simply be a motivation/maturity issue with your ds? It could all simply come together as he gets older, as he is clearly bright and able. My dd caused her teachers to throw their hands up in despair when she was 8, because she had so much potential but couldn't seem to do much useful with it. It's been a slog, but she is far more focused now and finally (in yr 9!) getting better at actually completing tasks.

bigTillyMincepie · 09/12/2011 12:54

Strops, I joined FB for the same reasons, plus badgering from distant friends. Luckily none of my old school chums seems to be in the Hedge-Fund bracket. And they do not seem to have aged any better than me. But some of them do post about every last moment of their lives....

BD, it sounds like it could be what Strops said - DS was very similar, but is improving - now in Y6! It sounds like you all have your eye on it!

Yes, agree with the 4 D's, I think it's DH's mantra. (Apart from "do" of courseGrin) And that the Big Society idea won't work.

ruby, hope the feedback was as expected good rather than bad!

Blackduck · 09/12/2011 13:42

Stropps, BTM I think there may be some of that in it, but I wanted to make sure the school were addressing it. We have agreed to try to make him read more fiction (reads mainly non-fiction) and I will talk to him about his reading etc. I have bought a set of short stories for Christmas so we can read a whole one and then talk about it.

He passed his piano exam, but is fed up that he didn't get a merit (2 marks off) or a distinction!

Stropperella · 09/12/2011 13:59

Well done to your ds, BD! He can aim for a merit next time :)

bigTillyMincepie · 09/12/2011 16:29

BD, DS wasn't that keen on reading stories to himself when younger - we persevered with reading to him (esp DH as DS thinks the sun shines out of his backside!) alot, and doing the turn-taking reading. He turned a corner and now will sometimes sit and read a novel in one or two sittings, so it can be doneSmile
Well done with his piano - DS just scraped a pass with his cornet!

CointreauVersial · 09/12/2011 22:42

Well, I did go to Gala Night yesterday. It's in the town nearby, and basically involved festive street entertainment, and shops staying open late to hand out mince pies, mulled wine and other freebies in an effort to make you feel guilty and spend some money. One of the joys of small-town living.

I bumped into loads of friends, and managed to dodge the rain and freeload to my heart's content - it was fun in the end (and I didn't have to cook).

I still don't know what I'm wearing tomorrow.....

bigTillyMincepie · 10/12/2011 10:51

Gala night sounds great, CV! (It must have been DD's school you saw - a friend said she saw it in a children's life-swap programme the other day - was that it?

I'm off to a poncetastic Christmas Pop-Up Market later, having shoehorned DD out of bed and dropped her at gym before picking up her new bike (Christmas prezzie!) and despite having had a feww glasses of Wine last night at a mums Christmas do.

Also got to pick up the tree on my ownSad as DH has got free tickets to Arsenal and is taking DS who is beyond excitedGrin

CointreauVersial · 10/12/2011 10:57

The CV family are currently in the car en route to the party, and because I hadn't pre-decided my outfit I spent about an hour this morning trying on every garment I own, and shrieking to DH that I had "nothing suitable". In the end I went for smart-ish and dull, so I look like I'm just off for a day in the office. And my glam cousins and SIL will look effortlessly stylish in comparison (sigh).

And I made us late, so DH is tutting away next to me.

CointreauVersial · 10/12/2011 11:01

X-post BTM, yes, that was the one.

Have a nice day.
