If you are OVER 5'7", where have you got a good longish waterproof warm coat?

I realise this has been done before and there was some success last year in persuading companies that such a thing would sell.

However I've just had my usual utterly rage-inducing visit to my local (very good) outdoor shop, where I was told that a warm, waterproof coat that was also long was 'doing a different job to what we sell'. What, doing a different job to keeping people warm and dry? Hmm I was shown jackets that are a bit longer than sit-on-your-bum style, hillwalking jackets which are warm and dry but basically awful, etc. And the man wouldn't stop talking.

What's around this year, have you bought anything good, or are we still at the stage where yes there are a few coats that fit shorter people fine, sell out in a week, and we have to look to Denmark for imports?

If anyone from a likely company reads this, please let me be clear: I WILL PAY MONEY FOR A LONGLINE WATERPROOF WARM COAT THAT FITS ME AND LOOKS EVEN JUST OK but I cannot find one

You'd have to do an order for overseas delivery (which they do) but I have this coat which is brilliant, it's SO warm and the insulated bit is removable so you can wear it year round. My mum got it for me as a gift last year.

PS forgot to say it comes in Tall - I am 5'9 with very long arms and the sleeves are actually too long on me but I like that.

I love that coat Roary - especially the purple one. Did you get the Tall one? Shipping charges are pricey though!

Roary, I have that coat too, except in the non-insulated version, and I love it. It's pretty stylish for this kind of coat and it's perfect for walking the dog in the rain. I am not especially tall (5ft7) and so the sleeves are too long on me too, but otherwise it's perfect.

Love this thread - I was going to buy the North Face Arctic Parka last year but the ran out and this year I think they have put the price up.

I am 5'10" and want something that will not only keep me dry but also be warm for all those hours spent just standing around in parks or on the edge of rugby pitches!

Love the look of the Merrell Wakefield. Has anyone got the Didriksons Isabelle www.didriksons.com/collection.asp?c=10&typeId=&usageId=&systemId=&sizeId=2?

Reporting back on the Didriksons Isabelle - oh my goodness this coat is so warm. I was desperate to wear it but it's not been that rainy here - so the other day it was slightly damp so I wore it on the school run and I was ROASTED!!! It is very 'functional' looking but slim fitting, the inner cuffed sleeve is very long so fine on that front. As I have said very warm, not tested the waterproofness yet.
I do feel the need to have another 'prettier' coat for when not too cold or wet but I keep hearing about this artic front that's coming so to hell with pretty - I will be warm and dry! HTH

Okay - just rung and ordered the Didriksons Elly from Astrid Adevntures - rang to check about sizes as I am somewhere between a 12 and 14 and was told it comes up large so went for the 12 - seems they are selling out fast!
Will let you know what when it arrives!

I took the advice and went for a Didrikson's Celeste - brilliant! I am so pleased with it. I am a size 16 and ordered that size and it is a good fit (I sometimes order 14 and had been dithering about ordering a 14). I ordered it from Breakoutdoors.co.uk who were brilliant - I spoke to the guy on the phone who was bemused by all the sudden orders courtesy of Mumsnet! I got it the next day free delivery. It was £129.99 with them. Their site has been saying you needed to preorder but they have just got some in.
It was pouring last night so I unpacked the car wearing it and loved it, especially the bum coverage! Top tip Drowninginlaundry and Prolesworth!

I also bought a Didrikson elly from Astrid Adventures. I'm very happy with the jacket and Heidi was helpful and lovely to deal with. Jacket arrived the next day.

Ordered my Didriksons Elly from Astrid Adventures on Friday afternoon, it arrived Sunday lunchtime! Fits really well, feels warm, just waiting for the right weather to test it out!

I have a Dikdrikson's Rebecca in khaki green and am very happy with it. It has a storm system rating of 5, i.e. theoretically more waterproof than Elly, Isabelle and Celeste (which are 2) but the same warmth rating. It's soft and cottony-feeling i.e. not nylony/shiny, but the rain just beads up on it and runs off.

The other thing I like about it (the others are probably the same) is that it doesn't have velcro bits round the collar etc so scarves and jumpers don't snag on it.

vesela · 14/11/2011 18:24

Didriksons Rebecca - this one.

It's a slightly browner green than in the photo.

Just spotted, for anyone who likes Merrell, what looks like a good deal from Gaynors in the Lake District:
//www.gaynors.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productcatalogue=190202390004
I bought my North Face gillet from them, so they are reliable. I'm still looking for the Ideal Jacket as I'm too fussy: I don't want one that's too warm as I'd like to wear it in spring and I have my lovely warm gillet for if it's colder; I want something easy to carry around when I'm not wearing it; I want something that will go with pretty much everything I wear... and that doesn't cost the earth. Doubt i'll find it though! I like the look of the North Face trench and like that it seems to be separable from the down jacket but Shock at price...

Bah - so confused! Decided I liked the Didriksons Isabelle but then read something about less than 5000hh not being really waterproof...? I live in the wet west of Scotland so don't want to get drenched by the drizzle we get much of the time. Sigh. Am I going to end up getting the North Face Sutherland after all?

I have a long, waxed coat that cost 30 from my local farm shop. Stylish it may not be, but nothing gets through that baby.

Report
vesela · 15/11/2011 19:39

Numpty, the Didriksons Rebecca I linked to above is 5000hh waterproof (that's what the 5 storm rating means).

Thanks for that info, Vesela - looks like a nice jacket. Unfortunately it looks like I may well be made redundant so I'll postpone buying for yet another year... perhaps next autumn/winter!

Report
NumptyMum · 15/11/2011 21:57

Vesela - for future reference, how is the coat fastened? If by zip, can you open it up from the base?

Report
vesela · 16/11/2011 21:04

It has a zip that can also open up from the bottom and also a row of poppers, but I don't bother doing those up.

I hope you don't get made redundant!
