If you are OVER 5'7", where have you got a good longish waterproof warm coat?

I realise this has been done before and there was some success last year in persuading companies that such a thing would sell.

However I've just had my usual utterly rage-inducing visit to my local (very good) outdoor shop, where I was told that a warm, waterproof coat that was also long was 'doing a different job to what we sell'. What, doing a different job to keeping people warm and dry? Hmm I was shown jackets that are a bit longer than sit-on-your-bum style, hillwalking jackets which are warm and dry but basically awful, etc. And the man wouldn't stop talking.

What's around this year, have you bought anything good, or are we still at the stage where yes there are a few coats that fit shorter people fine, sell out in a week, and we have to look to Denmark for imports?

If anyone from a likely company reads this, please let me be clear: I WILL PAY MONEY FOR A LONGLINE WATERPROOF WARM COAT THAT FITS ME AND LOOKS EVEN JUST OK but I cannot find one

I bought Lands End last year and might get the squalll this year
liked the look of this does anyone have it?

coffeekeepsmegoing · 12/10/2011 17:22

Asda. I have just got a bronze waterproof hooded coat with belted waist for £36. Hoping the zip lasts! It's really fashionable & very practical!

drowninginlaundry · 12/10/2011 18:35

I had almost literally a cat fight in my leetle shop today over the Didriksons Celeste parka, on the day they landed. (some of you know I sell this stuff so apologies, but it was quite extraordinary those ladies were going for it). Very flattering cut, much better than the pictures. Personally I think nicer, more casual than the Elly.

reallygrumpy · 12/10/2011 18:58

drowning - how long is the celeste and which colours (if any) don't have a White zip on the pocket?

drowninginlaundry · 12/10/2011 19:06

I'll tell you tomorrow when I'm back in the shoppy - what size for measurements?

reallygrumpy · 12/10/2011 19:53

Thanks drowning - can you also advise me on sizing? Are the sizes on the small side or the generous side? I'm usually a 12 but had DD2 3 months ago so am fatter than normal and am BF so have a rather larger chest than usual! Which probably means I'll need a 14... will stop waffling on now....

lentilpie · 12/10/2011 21:21

gilmoregirl- wondered how long the sleeves are as I have quite long arms. I think I might go for this or the landsend one, still not sure yet. Do you think it will be warm me enough for all this snow we are supposed to be having?

MaxineQuordlepleen · 12/10/2011 21:30

I'm sure you know this but NEVER bother with anything from long tall sally that says it is showerproof. It will not be.

I am 5' 10'' and have the Merrill Wakefield and now the Merrill Wakefield Insulated and they are both fab. Sleeves long enough and they have a waist. Plus new one comes in lovely colours. The are not glamourous but they are reasonably stylish and they work.

duende · 12/10/2011 22:55

Maxine, is the Merrell insulated warm enough for really cold, winter days? and what colour do you have? I'm very tempted to get one in charcoal but haven't seen them in flesh and don't have a stockist anywhere near me.

MegBusset · 12/10/2011 23:01

Merrell Haven is lovely and warm but NOT completely waterproof, as I have mentioned on several threads. After 30 mins pushing a buggy through a torrential downpour I had rather damp inside elbows.

Prolesworth · 12/10/2011 23:11

Another vote for the Didriksons Celeste. Mine arrived today and it's a perfect fit (I'm 5'9" and a size 14 - I got the coat in size 40).

It's the best coat I've ever had

Prolesworth · 12/10/2011 23:16

This site delivers to the UK

I got mine from here (low prices, free next day delivery) but colour and size choice is limited (and they sell out super quick)

The Didriksons Thelma is available here in red or dark blue for £109.99

lostlady · 12/10/2011 23:19

Tk maxx has served me well, but it is the luck of the draw. They do have dome Scandinavian makes: I have a jacket that is too long in sleeves! Am 5'8 ish

MaxineQuordlepleen · 13/10/2011 07:23

Duende, I have not yet tested it out on really cold days! However, when I put it on now it feels as warm as another very warm coat that I have, if you see what I mean. Also, I guess I walk pretty fast so I'm assuming that it will be warm enough. I trust Merrill on that one.

I have the Tuscan Heather colour. It's very subtle red, more grown up than Red Riding Hood.

SoupDragon · 13/10/2011 07:26

I've just got a Didrikson Elly. I am 5'7" and it comes just short of mid thigh I think.

reallygrumpy · 13/10/2011 09:34

Proles - how long is the coat on you? I'm slightly shorter than you and am looking for something that comes to mid-thigh. Also, what colour did you get? I like the khaki but looking online it seems to have white zips on the front pockets which I don't like - I am very fussy!

I do already have a Merrell Wakefield (not the insulated version) and it's fine but I don't love it enough to buy the insulated version too.

Prolesworth · 13/10/2011 09:39

The Celeste comes to mid thigh on me (longer at the back with the fishtail mallarkey). I'd say it sits high on the mid thigh though and I'm 5'9".

I got the black because it was cheap but the dark green is lovely isn't it? No white zips on the black one though.

drowninginlaundry · 13/10/2011 12:38

yep the Celeste is 84cm from shoulder seam in the front, but comes down to 97cm at the back. I don't know what colour the zips are in the khaki version, haven't got it
If you think you want it go and find it within the next few weeks, once the first snow falls in Sweden no shop can get any more Didrikson stock

Parasaurolophus · 13/10/2011 17:54

The celeste looks really good, but what happens to the furry hood when it gets soaking wet? Does the furry part repel water or does it get all heavy and water logged?

Prolesworth · 13/10/2011 18:09

The furry bit is only a detachable trim that goes around the hood, then there's a fleece lining inside the hood. But presumably if it's bucketing down you'd have the hood up anyway! Confused

duende · 13/10/2011 22:48

maxine, thanks. I'm still hesitating between the wakefield and the didrikson elly. so annoying not being able to just pop down to the shopping centre and try them both on!

omnishambles · 13/10/2011 22:54

I have a 3-in-1 coat from Joules that has been in a monsoon and is dry and the padded insert is very warm and it just covers my bum and doesnt look that bad at all actually. Oh and the hood stays up in wind which is one of my bugbears.

Its like this one but I got it in the sale at a third of the price.

I know you'll all sneer but at least am dry and toastie [hgrin]

fannybanjo · 13/10/2011 22:57

Bin bag, duvet, goretex spray, sewing machine - sorted Grin. Sorry no help whatsoever but I have a fucking HUGE North face jobby which sees me through minus 20 degree temps, hurricanes and pelting of eggs.

cerealqueen · 13/10/2011 23:40

OP, try the Lands End Squall. The fab thing about Lands End is that their guarantee never runs out so you can wear something for months and if you decide its not quite doing the job, return it and get your money back. I have done this and they are very clear on their website that this is their policy.
Nothing to lose!!

Ixia · 13/10/2011 23:52

I've got the North Face Arctic Parka. It's certainly waterproof, having stood in driving rain watching DD playing football many a time last winter. I'm 5'10 with a long torso, it fits fine and keeps my bum warm.
