If you are OVER 5'7", where have you got a good longish waterproof warm coat?

I realise this has been done before and there was some success last year in persuading companies that such a thing would sell.

However I've just had my usual utterly rage-inducing visit to my local (very good) outdoor shop, where I was told that a warm, waterproof coat that was also long was 'doing a different job to what we sell'. What, doing a different job to keeping people warm and dry? Hmm I was shown jackets that are a bit longer than sit-on-your-bum style, hillwalking jackets which are warm and dry but basically awful, etc. And the man wouldn't stop talking.

What's around this year, have you bought anything good, or are we still at the stage where yes there are a few coats that fit shorter people fine, sell out in a week, and we have to look to Denmark for imports?

If anyone from a likely company reads this, please let me be clear: I WILL PAY MONEY FOR A LONGLINE WATERPROOF WARM COAT THAT FITS ME AND LOOKS EVEN JUST OK but I cannot find one

lentilpie - the sleeves of my seasalt coat are pretty long. I am 5'9" and long limbed and they are long enough for me.

It is growing on me - I think that the navy one would have been slightly more stylish than the red (esp as DS also has a red anorak and some one said "oh His and Hers anoraks" which is not a good look is it?)

My coat just arrived from Seasalt, only ordered yesterday and didn't even ask for their next day delivery! Well, I'm really pleased with it, lovely material, fits really well (I'm just over 5'7 with long arms) it has a detatchable hood and an internal deep breast pocket.

Like Gilmoregirl said it doesn't have very deep outside pockets, but they're not too bad. Only thing I would suggest is to size up if you want to wear thick jumpers underneath. It feels like it will be lovely and warm though and soft around the neck which also seems to sit better than the uninsulated Wakefield.

After a long search it's definately a keeper, thanks for your input gilmoregirl

glad you are happy with yours lentilpie.

Which one did you get in the end?

You are lucky yours arrived so quickly - mine took 8 days!

It is definitely a v warm coat - I wore mine yesterday and was actually far too hot walking to and from work!

I got the blue in the end. Glad to know that it's warm, I'll put it aside until the weather gets colder, it's been very mild down here in the south. For the first time I'm quite looking forward to a cold snap!

sorry, Devon! (there's a video on MN now, in the Barclays microsite in work & money if you want to have a nosey!)

Didriksons has sold out of Elly in black, so no more available this season Shock I am going to get a few black 12s and 14s next week but that's all they had left

TracyK - 16 should be fine, Scandi outerwear comes with long arms

nobodysfool sorry can't help... but I am 175cm and 67kg and the Elly 12 is spot on, roomy enough for plenty of layers underneath mind you so not tight fitted.

drowninginlaundry -
Cool video. I would love to kite surf it looks amazing but don't think my crook back would hack it!
Hope business is going well.
Is the celeste just available in white? Think I'd be washing it every week with mad dog kids walks an' all.

I bought a Northface Arctic Parka -last year and it is the best thing I have ever bought.
I walk up a hill on the way home from work and it is the coldest place on the planet -Grin wind, lashing rain and snow and I was so warm and dry.Sometimes I found it a bit warm though so this year I went for a Merrel Wakefield insulated in charcoal - to wear
on not so chilly days . It is also lovely and I really like the fact its not a shapeless sack (nor is the Northface). It has lovely shaping and detail and no square nipples -see other thread.Grin
Im 5"10 and a good size 12 with swimmers shoulders and a bum to match !
The medium Wakefield is perfect. I do think looking at that thread that the large of boobage will struggle but sadly that doesnt apply to me Sad

I bought the Didriksen Thelma yesterday - and think I may have made a mistake. Its still pretty cold on. Its just not snuggly. I think I might take it back and swap for the Celeste. I found our local shop has loads of them - though the Celeste isn't as flattering on around the bust area.

At least I saw the pink Celeste in RL and glad I hadn't ordered it - didn't like it much. I got the rootbeet and is a lovely colour. I can't remember the name of the padded option in rootbeet - don't think it was Celeste.

I just received my Didriksen Elly today from Astrid's Adventures. Lovely customer service; the coat arrived very quickly.

Firstly, this is not a stylish coat. It is a slimly cut, not very puffy, serious bit of outdoor kit. I'm not going to turn any heads for fashion in this coat, but I think I am going to love it.

I am 5'9 and a reliable size 14; I also have swimmer shoulders. The 14 (40) fits great. It is roomy when I wear normal clothes and fits snugly with a thick fleece underneath. The length comes to my mid-thigh. It covers my bum when I sit on narrow step, but I would have to perch if I wanted to sit on a wet chair. It can cinch in at the waist, but serious cinching didn't flatter me in this coat. The sleeves are very long.

It is incredibly cozy. It felt a bit like wearing my duvet. The hood is big and stays up. I feel confident that I will be able to blow dry without my hair without hesitation on even the rainiest days. The coat (and blow dry) withstood several hail storms today without any trouble. I do believe it will be very waterproof. In fact tomorrow I have 1.5 miles between two meetings and I usually drive in bad weather but I will be able to walk in comfortably tomorrow with this coat.

The pockets are big, but placed in the front of the coat. They were great for a phone and keys but not great for hands (not awful either, just an inch away from where I would have preferred them).

If it is cold but dry I will probably choose a more flattering wool coat. The Elly seems like it is going to be great for the wet, windy, gale days, which will make up about 98% of the weather between now and May.
