Can you still be funky in bootcut jeans!?

Teachermumof3 · 06/09/2011 20:22

I posted earlier about feeling apple shaped at the moment (size 12-14, 5 foot 3, diminishing waist, increasing arse, good legs, big boobs, age 34) and I really don't think that skinny jeans suit me-I look like a triangle!

Does anyone out there wear bootcut jeans and feel they don't look like their mum!?

Where can I buy decent jeans that are slim on the thigh but fit on the hip-has anyone tried the Levi Curve ID ones?

Indeed - all about personal style and confidence.

Missed the no black boots and jeans issue though! That's bonkers!

polyhymnia · 08/09/2011 10:15

OK, so, for autumn/winter:

  • for bootcuts (if I find a pair I like from new season stuff, which are tight enough on upper leg) boots are fine under the jeans - preferably chunkyish boots, which I personally like.
  • for skinnies and straight leg boots are also fine - tucked in if that works well, as it's likely to with skinnies, underneath if not. If jeans aren't tucked in but worn over boots, the tops of boots can't be too chunky or will distort the jeans.

That works for me. Don't think hard and fast rules on colour needed - confident enough to decide that.

Anyone disagree???

Helltotheno · 08/09/2011 10:19

bonkers20 it's funny you should say that about skinnies looking like running tights on your long legs, I've thought that before when I've seen skinnies on v tall girls with long legs. I think you're right, they look much better tucked into boots in this case.

Imo the best figure for skinnies is a small frame and slim and shapely, but not really long legs, a la Kate Middleton. Bow legs are out for skinnies ime, and I could name some slebs but won't :)

Here's a site with some info on how to wear bootcuts (note girls, they don't rule out mum boots!!).

Here's Jenny in bootcuts and wedges, though I think the jeans are a tad too long here.

Helltotheno · 08/09/2011 10:22

polyhymnia agree totally re chunky wedges. I have a pair of ankle boots with a sole of about 2.5cm and heel about 4.5cm and they look great with bootcuts, but not too high so I can actually walk in them. Hard to get though...

Ifancyashandy · 08/09/2011 10:25

Ha Poly I totally disagree! Boots should never be worn with bootcut jeans.

Skinnies/Straight legs should never be worn over boots

I have long very good legs (don't worry, 'nice legs / shame about the face' could have been written for me!) with slim hips / waist. Skinnies look amazing on me!

Chandon - but those mum boots are deeply offensive aesthetically, no?

bonkers20 · 08/09/2011 10:25

Well I look proper daft in too chunky shoes. They don't look good on a smaller frame IMO.

bonkers20 · 08/09/2011 10:28

Ha Poly I totally disagree! Boots should never be worn with bootcut jeans.

How still. Surely the clue is in the name "boot" cut.

Having said that, aren't Uggs actually slippers in Australia or that a myth?

polyhymnia · 08/09/2011 10:30

Re Uggs (which I don't wear mysel) the owner of our local shop which stocks Emus amongst various other trendyish brandas and is quite savvy told me that was the case, ie meant as slippers originally.

Ifancyashandy · 08/09/2011 10:32

Well, to be fair, I would ban all bootcut jeans bar the 7 for All Mankind ones (as they are cut more like straights!)

I hate bootcut jeans and think they look incredibly dated. The wider jeans that are coming back in are flares. There; stall set!

bonkers20 · 08/09/2011 10:32

*silly, not still!

bonkers20 · 08/09/2011 10:37

Ifancy I am glad you are not running the country then as the 7 for All Mankind jeans are very, very expensive.

I'll stick to my £26 Next flares

Rhian82 · 08/09/2011 10:42

I've worn bootcuts since I was a teenager, I can't imagine my mum ever wearing them.

So no, they don't make me feel like my mum!

Ifancyashandy · 08/09/2011 10:42

I buy them online from discount sites. Pay about a 3rd of list price and they last years but again, each to own! That's wha makes clothes fun!

polyhymnia · 08/09/2011 10:56

Seems to be disagreement on whether boots ever OK with bootcut, - personally think I'll go for it if/when I get the right jeans which I feel good in AND the right boots - chunky sut me because I'm large with long slim legs.

Don't worry Ifancy, I do tuck proper skinnies into boots. I was thinking - though I didn't make that clear - more of what to do with straight leg jeans, of which I have a couple of pairs I like. I always find what to wear with those when it's too cold for ballerinas a bit of a problem - what are people's suggestions??

Sparklegeek · 08/09/2011 11:40

Ifancy - which discount sites do you use for 7 f A M jeans? I have heard such good things about them but can't pay full price! Also would need to try some on first I guess.

Thanks

ImeldaM · 08/09/2011 12:06

I like flat ankle boots with jeans for everyday wear

Some fantastic El Naturalista boots would look great with most jeans, IMO.

Or cheaper option, ankle boots from clarks

polyhymnia · 08/09/2011 12:17

Imelda - like the second ones - not something I often say about Clarks. Jeans tucked in if skinny and, I guess, if straight leg, right??

Ifancyashandy · 08/09/2011 12:22

I use Cocosa, Brand Alley, the Outnet, Private Sales and Vente Privee.

I also buy them in the Joseph sale - one year I got three pairs for £120!

And I live near a fabulous TK Max but that is a bit more hit and miss.

Soups · 08/09/2011 13:49

Views on any of these for non skinny jeans? I have Converse and Vans for dry days, timberland fur lined (not walking boots) for cold days at the park. I'd like something else, that can still be worn with socks.

Like the 1st pair but would wear with skirts a la 'Librarian chic'.

Like 2nd pair and would look good with skinnies IMO

ADORE black and white pair - amazing with black slim fit (& maybe ankle grazing) trousers, a buttoned up white shirt and a Crombie style coat (see Stella Tennant on Zara home page). Also with skirts but would need to play around with lengths and styles.

Can't open other ones.

wicketkeeper · 08/09/2011 19:02

Don't believe everything you read on Style and Beauty. Boot cuts are not 'out' - what goes around comes around. They are the perfect shape if you are a tad large around the bum (they balance everything out), and they look great on long thin people too (because everything does). Skinny jeans can make your feet look big - too much shoe sticking out at the bottom. What matters is that you buy the right jeans for you, and for what you are doing in them - and that might mean a lot of shopping around, rather than just buying what suits someone else.

Teachermumof3 · 11/09/2011 21:47

Right-I have today trawled our local high street in search of jeans! I think I am right in that my arse is too big for skinny jeans (especially with dolly shoes or sandals, thought think they'd be ok with boots and a longish top as that would balance things out!) and have tried on more pairs of bootcut jeans that I care to remember.

My verdict is as follows...
Next-not a bad fit, but very thin denim
Red Herring-crap-made arse look flat
Jasper Conran-very long
H+M-stupidly long-in fact they didn't have any leg lengths under 32 inches!
Per Una-not very nice material
Top Shop-All skinny jeans
Miss Selfridge-Why did I even bother...
New Look-not bad, though actually the pair I got (slim leg, nor bootcut) are going back tomorrow as they are no good for winter as boots look crap over and under them!
Dorothy Perkins-not bad and nearly bought a pair there. They weren't particularly flattering tbh, but did fit quite well.

Finally-after nearly crying, I bought a pair of 'Baby Bootcut' in Republic and they are bloody marvellous! They fit very tightly (with stretch though) around the hips and thighs but have no overhang over the top! £25, which I thought was fab!

Hooray-I thought I would update anyway-not sure if there's anywhere else I should have tried. Couldn't find any 7 for mankind or Levis to try.

I actually think I might take the New Look ones back and get a pair of skinny ones to wear with boots. Definitely to wear with longer tops though...

If you wear clothes that don't suit you to follow the latest fashion than you will never be funky.

smartyparts · 11/09/2011 21:54

I'm a devotee of the skinny but I think bootcuts, whilst they're never going to be cutting edge, are flattering for the large of bum or thick of thigh.

They have to be worn with Converse or something flat though. Heels render them immediately mumsy.
