Can you still be funky in bootcut jeans!?

Teachermumof3 · 06/09/2011 20:22

I posted earlier about feeling apple shaped at the moment (size 12-14, 5 foot 3, diminishing waist, increasing arse, good legs, big boobs, age 34) and I really don't think that skinny jeans suit me-I look like a triangle!

Does anyone out there wear bootcut jeans and feel they don't look like their mum!?

Where can I buy decent jeans that are slim on the thigh but fit on the hip-has anyone tried the Levi Curve ID ones?

Ifancy, - do see what you mean on bootcuts plus boots (and don't shop at any of those). If I do try bootcuts again, will probably stick to Converse type, and only wear boots in extreme situations - eg when it's exceptionally cold, slippery, etc.

But, when it comes to tucking straight or skinny leg jeans into boots, is it OK to do it with short boots (as long as boots themselves aren't frumpy and there's no gap, obviously!)?

In asking all this, I don't delude myself I'm going to become magically funky at my age and size but I do want to look as good as I can, and have observed from looking at other people that getting the proportions right is a major factor in whether or not a look 'works' on an individual.

Ifancyashandy · 07/09/2011 14:12

Personally, would always go for a knee length boot if tucking jeans in. But with or without heel - both work!

Btw - am not putting self forward as some arbiter of style! Just my opinion!

Ifancyashandy · 07/09/2011 14:15

Oh, and wouldn't judge someone for their clothing (up to a point! Whaletails deserve to be judged!) and yup, there are much more important things in life but a) fashion / clothes are fun! And b) this is S&B!

latrucha · 07/09/2011 16:53

BUt don't bootcuts look a bit odd folded over and tucked in? Or is it that my calves are too chunky and that's that?

EssentialFattyAcid · 07/09/2011 16:55

What are
a) mum boots
b) whaletails?

Ifancyashandy · 07/09/2011 17:00

That's why no to bootcuts! Need straights / skinnies for boots.

For mumboots, see above in thread.

For whaletail, see here

hmc · 07/09/2011 17:41

.....Has come over all Hyacinth Bucket after opening that whaletail link

Ifancyashandy · 07/09/2011 17:49

Should just be a picture of girl with thong showing out of jeans?! Copied the picture only so Blush if it's linked to a dodgy site. Sorry.

hmc · 07/09/2011 18:04

No worries Grin

BalloonSlayer · 07/09/2011 18:11

OMG had to close that link quickly Blush

moonstorm · 07/09/2011 18:19

See, my bum would look like that if I had a whale-tail...

I think it's the length that can make bootcuts look wrong. I usually buy bootcut, but they have to be long - too short looks wrong.

polyhymnia · 07/09/2011 18:49

Agree about length being needed.

latrucha mentions (ironically?) tucking bootcuts into boots. Surely noone actually does that, do they? I thought the s and b crime under debate was letting 'mum' boots - or indeed any other boots? - peek out from under your (possibly too short) bootcuts??

Getting confused again now. Whaletails don't help ...

CheerfulYank · 07/09/2011 18:55

Lockets that may be the only time anyone has ever said that in reference to me! :o

CheerfulYank · 07/09/2011 18:56

I think boots with bootcut are fine, but not to tuck in. If they're being tucked in you need skinnies.

latrucha · 07/09/2011 19:22

I tried it once and undid it straight away. Blush

vesela · 07/09/2011 19:40

I have three pairs of jeans - pair of flares, pair of bootcuts and pair of skinnies. I like them all.

My bootcuts I wear with chunkyish boots (i.e. almost-bikers) over the top, not tucked in. Skinnies underneath boots (although not wild about that) or with ballerina-type shoes, which are also what I've worn with flares (I did buy some Lottas, but then I forgot I had them Blush).

I'm in need of more shoes for jeans, though - something more solid than summer shoes, but not boots. I really don't like Converse/trainers. They just look blergh at the bottom of jeans.

totallyshoeless · 07/09/2011 21:13

what shandy said. I still occasionally admire the odd stylish looking mum in a slight bootcut over a converse (or where I live, the lived-in looking Ash equivalent is de rigeur) but wouldn't touch boot cuts with anything else.
However anyone can wear a skinny jean (just not too skinny) with a good boot and look nice. I used to think only size 6 women could wear skinnies and now I live in them - you just have to get used to a different silhouette IMO.

vesela · 07/09/2011 21:38

I think Converse and Ash are the new mum boots, in their way. I don't get converse at all - all flat and long.

SofaQueen · 07/09/2011 21:41

I wear bootcuts long with platform heels (the hem skims just centimeters above the floor in the platform heels) - give the illusion of me being tall-ish. to me, they are a dressier cut.

WhollyGhost · 08/09/2011 07:23

agree re. converse being the new Mum boots - even less practical too, the climate being what it is

Chandon · 08/09/2011 09:32

I think skinny jeans and converse combo are so much more desperate than mum jeans and boots (=honest women stuck in the 90s).

Skinny jeans and converse scream to me "fashion victim, no sense of own style, sheep, meh meh". Sorry, just needed to balance the anti- mum-boot comments!!!

Ifancyashandy · 08/09/2011 09:39

Haha! All good fun!

But would rather be a sheep than a wolf in mum fleece boots and bootcuts!

(am much more likely to be in skinnies and heeled boots anyway!)

MatLeaveForever · 08/09/2011 09:46

I only ever see Converse on students to be honest round my way...

bonkers20 · 08/09/2011 09:49

I wear boot cut and don't look a bit like my Mum!

I'm tall and slim. I run and my thighs are athletic. I have very thin lower legs and ankles and some tight skinnies look like I'm wearing running tights. They look better tucked in boots (high or low).

I've had a couple of pair of FCUK boot cut for years and they look good on me. I feel good and that will exude from me, regardless of whether they're "in" or "out". I didn't even realise they were "out" until I read it on MN.

And what's with the no black boots with jeans? Bizarre.
