Can you still be funky in bootcut jeans!?

Teachermumof3 · 06/09/2011 20:22

I posted earlier about feeling apple shaped at the moment (size 12-14, 5 foot 3, diminishing waist, increasing arse, good legs, big boobs, age 34) and I really don't think that skinny jeans suit me-I look like a triangle!

Does anyone out there wear bootcut jeans and feel they don't look like their mum!?

Where can I buy decent jeans that are slim on the thigh but fit on the hip-has anyone tried the Levi Curve ID ones?

Yes, of course you can.

My personal opinion is that bootcut styles can look very Mumsy, but not necessarily.

These look Mumsy, even on the model, whereas these don't (ignoring the fake rips and going just by the cut).

Skinnies definitely aren't for everyone; boot cuts still, and probably always will, have their place. I remember someone on here saying that boot cuts flattered no-one. Confused What complete tripe.

SofaQueen · 07/09/2011 06:09

I second the 'bootcut being out for so long that they are now in'. I had full intention to buy yet another pair of skinnies at a specialty jean shop, and they steered me towards purchasing a pair of bootcuts saying that skinnies were "so over". Not sure about the "so over" comment, but it was nice to have a different style (and they do wonders for lengthening my short legs).

Go ahead and wear your bootcuts.

poppydog2 · 07/09/2011 06:44

Well if bootcut are no longer in why are there so many more on net a porter etc this year??? Defo heading back into fashion. And as one other comment pointed out there is a difference between being fashionable and being stylish!!! Wear your bootcuts and be happy!!!

EssentialFattyAcid · 07/09/2011 07:13

Skinnies are hugely unflattering on the majority of folk who wear them IMO.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 07/09/2011 07:26

True.

I know it's crass you say you need to be a minimum height and maximum weight to wear X item of clothing, but I do think skinnies fall onto that category.

I honestly do not understand anyone who says bootcuts flatter no-one. OK, they may or may not be the height of fashion, but that surely doesn't have any sway on whether something lengthens your leg or makes your thighs more svelte?!

Ragwort · 07/09/2011 07:57

Oh dear, I realise I now wear boot cuts and mum boots - but I am probably old enough to be a mum to most mumsnetters anyway so perhaps its allowed Grin. Luckily I have reached the age when so long as I am comfortable (and reasonably clean) I really don't worry about my 'style' - or lack of.

I wore flares the first time round in the 70s and won't be doing that again !

SueFlay · 07/09/2011 08:14

There's a style this season called Baby Bootcut that look like they'd work well for women who can't pull off skinnies (me) but can't cope with too much ankle-flappage (also me)

I've only seen them in the mega £££ Hudson brand but there must be more out there.

NB: Funky can describe music or smells. Nothing else. Wink

cunexttuesonline · 07/09/2011 08:16

Bootcuts are far more flattering than skinnies. Skinnies make most people look like triangles with big boat feet at the end. Unless they are tucked into jeans but I am not a fan of that look either, it looks kind of cheap.

If it suits you, wear it and never mind what is supposed to be in, otherwise you will look back at what you were wearing and think wtf was that about, I looked like a twat.

Teachermumof3 · 07/09/2011 09:11

Lol to the funky comments-boo hiss; I love the word and shan't stop using it for anyone ;)

Thank you for all the replies-bootcut (without mum boots) here I come!

7 for All Mankind do bootcut that doesn't 'look' like a bootcut. Very flattering as very slim on the thigh and has an ironed / faded crease down the front. I wear with Converse.

A good alternative to bootcut jeans are straight leg ones - also very flattering.

Am tall with a 40inch inside leg so skinnies suit me too. I adore them!

NO-ONE should wear those mum boots! They hurt my eyes!

CardiCorgi · 07/09/2011 09:37

If mum boots are banned, then what should we wear with our so-out-they're-in boot cuts? Ideally both flat and heeled options would be good (not that I bought two new pairs of jeans fairly recently or anything).

Ifancyashandy · 07/09/2011 09:41

Converse or the like for flats. Bootcuts should not be worn with heels!

If you want an evening / with heels jean, do for straight leg.

Jean Rules according to IFancyAShandy Grin!

Helltotheno · 07/09/2011 10:06

I can't really figure out the straight leg. Any time I try on a pair, they appear more like skinnies on me, ergo hideous (maybe other people have more luck with them). A lot of brands are actually doing the 'baby' bootcut type, without calling them that, and those ones to me, look similar to the straight style, or am I off the mark completely?

Also, whatever about normal heels, I think bootcuts look very good with wedge heels, esp when the wedge is on the sole as well as the heel.

Ifancyashandy · 07/09/2011 10:14

If you can, go to Selfridges and visit their 'Jean Clinic'. Tell them you want straight legs that don't look like skinnies and they'll get loads of pairs for you to try on - from high street to high end. Even if the ones you like best are pricey and you don't buy them, you'll know what to look for in the future and/or can hunt for a discounted pair on-line.

And yes, stand corrected on the wedge/bootcut issue!

Helltotheno · 07/09/2011 10:20

Thanks for that advice. Am definitely in need of a 'Jeans doctor' Grin

higgle · 07/09/2011 11:01

These Nudie jeans were mentioned on another thread - they are described as "the best of both worlds" and look really nice slim bootcut jeans

winefairy · 07/09/2011 11:11

I had ruled out skinnies after trying on many a pair but then discovered Fat Face straight leg jeans and it was a revelation! I kid you not, they are glorious and suit me far better than my bootlegs. I have more compliments about them than any other single piece of clothing I own which is slightly galling as they were £20 in the sale although they were so fabulous I bought 5 pairs.

WhollyGhost · 07/09/2011 12:24

"Bootcuts should not be worn with heels! "

Doesn't it depend on the heels? I have massive disproportionate hips, and find that bootcuts are always more flattering than straight leg.

I wouldn't wear them with dainty heels, but I do think they can look good with wedges or chunky ankle boots.

Ifancyashandy · 07/09/2011 12:43

I conceded wedges! Stand by the boot issue though - too Pur Una for my liking. Sorry. Jeans should be tucked into boots - which can either be flat or heeled.

ImeldaM · 07/09/2011 12:52

Can't get into bootcuts again, yet...I like straight leg jeans, jeans that are a bit 'traditional' looking, like original Levi's

Or 'boyfriend' type can be good when worn with the rest of outfit feminine, this from Next.

Also like slim leg, not skinny (too fat curvy for them), as good to tuck into boots & don't get in mud/puddles when out walking dog, like these

polyhymnia · 07/09/2011 13:07

I have long, slimmish legs, though my body is a large hourglass.

I spend a lot of time in jeans. Like straight leg and (moderately) skinny ones and used to like boot-cuts, as long as not too flappy, or too baggy on the thighs. Am thinking of venturing into some new bootcuts for autumn but do get confused on the footwear question, as soon as I move away from my summer 'uniform' of Converse style or ballerinas with jeans.

Hate 'mum boots' - prefer flat to those sad little heels - and not a fan of skinnies tucked into boots either, though have been known to do it with ankle boots. Preumably we're not saying no boots look good with jeans ever, are we?? What are people's 'rules' /suggestions, please?

Ifancyashandy · 07/09/2011 13:30

To be honest, I do think any boot with a boot cut jean looks incredibly dated and scream 'I shop at Next / Wallis / Pur Una'. I only wear them with Converse, so very casually. I'd go for a straight or skinny leg with a boot over the top. Sorry!

thestringcheeseincident · 07/09/2011 13:32

I'm with ifancy. 7's (their version of a bootcut) and converse look good. I love 7's, they make everyone little or large look good.

Helltotheno · 07/09/2011 13:40

Ifancyashandy don't apologise, I'm sure people will wear what they like anyway!

I do wear flat stuff with a bootcut jean but because my legs are proportionately shorter than my torso, I'd prefer wear a wedge heel or whatever, and I wouldn't say they're mumsy, but if randomers on the street think they are, fcuk em I don't mind too much.

Tbh I'd never pay that much attention to what someone else was wearing to make a judgement that it was 'dated' or whatever... unless it was absolutely over the top.

WhollyGhost · 07/09/2011 13:44

I think that the truth is that you can't really look funky in bootcut jeans. They are comfortable, practical, flattering - but not funky. Grin

so wear them with whatever you like and stop worrying!
