Apologies if there is a thread going already

OP posts:
FGM · 31/08/2011 17:51

I'll be wearing my usual garb:-
something old- well most of my clothes are old
something new- 'cos Mummy went to Jigsaw and came back with a big bag this weekend Wink
something lovely- a cashmere cardi, nice scarf, big smile or even a sparkly hair clip etc
something blue or grey- just because I love blue and grey.

I shall not be:-
making a particular effort more than my normal daily effort, worrying about my hair

Dorje · 31/08/2011 17:52

Am I wearing the target today then Wink

Well it's like this, (even though it's none of anybody's business, ya know) yes, it's a killer, but it's our nearest school, and the next one is an hour away. My Dd loves the school, so comments about it being a horrible school are way off the mark.
OK the fees are steep, but not excessively so for the kind of school it is.
And the Yummy Mummies only appear a few days a year: other wise it's nannies and au pairs - you know, the help.
So on the Yummy Mummy days, its stilettos at dawn, and the other days it's a little more serene.

However as the Mummies are the ones to decide if you're in or out, not the nannies, you either step up to the mark on those days, or sink without a trace. And that includes your DD.

The logic is quite easy really: and don't try and say it's not like that in 'real life'. There are Queen Bees and judgy pants everywhere, more's the pity. I try not to get into the whole clique thing, and luckily my DD isn't interested in it much either. But you have to be aware of the social and class implications of <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.ie/imgres?imgurl=englishhistory.net/tudor/monarchs/eliz1-rainbow.jpg&imgrefurl=englishhistory.net/tudor/monarchs/eliz1.html&h=444&w=350&sz=41&tbnid=9ecsrI-vf64oSM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=71&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dqueen%2Belizabeth%2B1%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=queen+elizabeth+1&docid=bAkhxCYxuOrSFM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=2WReTuBtytGEB_f12KME&ved=0CDMQ9QEwAg&dur=2237" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">dress and casual dress.

piratecat · 31/08/2011 17:55

my Mrs Howard Donald tee!

CroissantNeuf · 31/08/2011 17:56

Crutches and a rather snazzy plaster cast Sad

Sofabitch · 31/08/2011 18:01

Um what ever I
Find in my drawers in the morning. Do people really have time to think about shit like this ?

Dorje · 31/08/2011 18:11

Well obviously they do sofabitch, and some even have time to post about it too! Grin

hatwoman · 31/08/2011 18:56

"On This Morning they covered an article from the Daily Mail that mums are spending more on the "school run outfit" than school uniform. Really??? I doubt it. "

I don't doubt at all that the total value of clothes worn by a parent is usually more than that worn by the child. school uniform (for most of us) is a 2.99 polo shirt, a 4.99 skirt, a 6.99 sweatshirt plus shoes. It would be entirely reasonable, understandable and normal for a parent's clothing to cost more. what's wrong/objectionable about the DM story is its typical twisting of a fairly mundane observation (that adult's clothing is more expensive than children's) into a ridiculous headline implying that women are vain, extravagant and have school run outfits. If most of the responses to the op are to be belived that's a load of (mysogynistic) bunkum.

Popbiscuit · 31/08/2011 19:04

Tee-hee. Gold star for Dorje for getting the Wolef fleece in there. That'll be me on the school run. Nice and cozy.

exoticfruits · 31/08/2011 19:35

Do people worry about what to wear for the school run?....seriously?Shock
Surely just what you think of as you get up, bearing in mind what you are doing for the rest of the day and the weather?
I begin to feel very thankful that mine are older-if you now have to think what to wear and the first day has to be special!!

magicmelons · 31/08/2011 19:46

Can't believe you got a bit of a flaming OP after all the school run dress has been a feature on MN for Years.

I have just bought some new bits that i've been after for ages but paid for next day delivery so as i have them for ds first day at school next week so as i look nice Blush The mums at DDs school know I am a scruff as by week 2 i'll have given up but first impressions and all that.

magicmelons · 31/08/2011 19:48

Oh and of course in answer to the question do people care what they wear on the school run, it depends on the school, if Elle macwhatsername is at your school gate then you might feel a bit crap in jeans, fleece and crocs. Wink.

Dorje · 31/08/2011 20:02

Oh thanks for my gold star Popbiscuit - I do love it [made my day emoticon]

vesela · 31/08/2011 20:18

This. I've found the perfect hat and gloves.

sailorsgal · 31/08/2011 20:51

hatwoman My five year old's blazer cost £75, jumpers were around £18. I spent £75 on shoes and trainers this week. I haven't spent that on myself recently.

GloriaVanderbilt · 31/08/2011 21:02

I am wearing camouflage, orangey brick camouflage so the HT doesn't see me. She will want to rip my throat out if she sees me.

Or I might just tell ds he is far too old to need me in the playground now he's in yr4, and scarper when I get within 100 metres of the woman Grin

EldonAve · 31/08/2011 21:02

Well I've done my nails (OPI mimosas) and chosen a handbag
Actual clothes will be a morning panic

OP posts:
GloriaVanderbilt · 31/08/2011 21:04

No actually I have something in mind, well what I have on today tbh, Toast land girlsy trousers (tweed) with high waist, and shetland sweater and horse boots.

I feel all autumnal.

Sofabitch · 31/08/2011 21:08

Breathes a sigh of relief that I avoid hair straightener mums and wouldn't feel crap if Ellie mcwhatshername what's at my school because I'd rather spend half an hour extra in bed than 5 hours making myself look like a doll.

EldonAve · 31/08/2011 21:10

I'm not liking the autumnal weather as I don't have a decent light coat

OP posts:
Gastonladybird · 31/08/2011 21:11

I am in awe of anyone who has time to look nice- I think it's good I manage to shower.

And even Elle macpherson stuck up for herself re school run outfits I look smart at schoolyard as on way to work

GloriaVanderbilt · 31/08/2011 21:11

I'm relieved, I have a lot of old autumn clothes and find summer a bit difficult.

But it is chilly.

Kew had some beautiful sale coats...a pale green one you can't miss.
I'd have got it if I needed one but I don't.

GloriaVanderbilt · 31/08/2011 21:13

LOVE this

auroraday · 31/08/2011 22:30

really weird as I live in a SW London property hotspot but nobody gives a hoot at our school. Everyone is very down to earth. Haven't given a thought to it (although it will be work clothes). On the other hand, dress down month at work has had me scratching my head every morning - thankfully it's over!

Thehusbandsatcricketagain · 31/08/2011 22:37

is this real ???????????? who gives a monkeys what you look like on the school run, well obviously the clique at the local school do but me nah.....

I will be wearing the previous evenings hangover due to the terror at having to arise from the pit early

& I don't care about judgements,so if you want to judge then feck off :o

KimberlyClark · 31/08/2011 22:41
