Most detested makeup brands

Benefit - beneshit. Make up for teenagers or people who know bugger all about makeup but like the twee packaging. And it stinks.

Max factor - nothing I have ever bought from that range works. Infinity lipstick made me look like dried up hag, the cream blush has texture of ronseal, eyeshadows are crap, foundations crap colours.

MOST of maybelline. I tried that Eraser stuff out of morbid curiosity, it looked awful, like I had smeared PVA glue on my face. However I have a cream blusher from there which I love.

Clarins. I just don't get it.

In my teens I was obsessed with finding the palest foundation and then wearing rimmels heather shimmer lipstick, must have looked like a bloody corpse!!

catinboots · 20/06/2011 18:34

Another Benefit hater here

DonaAna · 20/06/2011 18:41

Dior. Their foundations (Forever, Nude) are laced with a toxic perfume that allergized me within a month of starting to use it. If I dab it on, I get blood-red itchy eyes. No makeup has ever made me look more crap. And their expensive eye cream pills and won't stay on and I think even margarine would be more effective. Over £100 in the bin, thank you Dior.

The Tesco face lift primer is lovely, and only a fiver, not a tenner- bargain!

Melfish · 20/06/2011 18:48

Tatty- if you want to relive the past I see Poppy King has done a range of lipsticks for no.7

no.7

haven't seen them in the flesh but they look a bit 90s!

hester · 20/06/2011 19:00

Touche Eclat gives me eyebag scabs.

LauLauLemon · 20/06/2011 19:02

I recommend Urban Decay eyeshadow primers in Greed and Sin. Fantastic gold and champagne colours that work on their own as a light shimmery eyeshadow and hold pigment extremely well.

TattyDevine · 20/06/2011 19:05

Melfish! Gah!

Some of the "names" are the same I think!!!

It would be cheaper to make a paste of compost and espresso and paint that on instead. At least then you could fertilise your lips a bit...

TragicallyHip · 20/06/2011 19:22

Oh wow I remember Rimmel's Heather Shimmer!

SofaKingOld · 20/06/2011 19:22

LauLau Urban Decay currently have a collection of eye shadows they call Naked and have the primers you mention. About 12 shadows for £32 which is a bargain. Have been V impressed with them even though I bought them while pissed on my day out to see take that.

LauLauLemon · 20/06/2011 19:31

I have the Naked palette (I bought two in case they are discontinued). The eyeshadows are pretty much full size so it's an absolute bargain and the colours are absolutely beautiful. I recommend everyone try them.

strawberryjelly · 20/06/2011 19:47

Tatty I don't use Clinique skin care re. cleansers.

I do use their youth surge or super defence moisturisers.

I use L'Oreal cleanser for mature skin, and eye make up remover- dead cheap - but I have used all kinds from £20 a bottle to £2, and find this works and doesn't irritate my skin.

madmomma · 20/06/2011 21:57

I've always found l'oreal, lancome, no.7, no 17, and urban decay to be shit. Avon is beyond shit - their lipsticks are gross. I swear by laura mercier tinted moisturiser & secret camoflage, any old cheapo loose powder, max factor's new foundation in a pot, rimmel true match concealer in a tube for eyebags (but definitely NOT the truematch foundation), max factor mascaras, benefit bo-oing concealer, chanel blushers, mac pencils and dior eyebrow pencils. I like the myface range at boots & all estee lauders lip products are lovely

SummerRain · 21/06/2011 10:24

Fabulous... I have a list of eyeshadows to try now, I'll have to try that primer you suggested too LauLauLemon

Good thing dp is always telling me he loves it when i wear make-up.... he can't complain about the £££££ I'll be spending Wink

I picked up a rimmel brown pencil eyeliner the other day and tried it last night (bored while waiting for dd to finish football) and it went on so much better than many of the expensive ones I've tried, was a lovely shade and didn't irritate at all.

Chanel Vitaluminiare gives a gorgeous look but be warned if you have sensitive skin like me..... it itches like mad and I can't wear it two days in a row as it irritates so badly, and leaves me madly spotty.

Speaking of spots.... I've spent the last few years trying every sensitive skin potion in the chemists with no results, my face was as red and blotchy as ever. I found my old tea tree stick rolling around my make up case two days ago though and popped some on and by the next day my face looked fantastic, clear skin and noticeably better complexion. No idea why I ever stopped using it!
