Most detested makeup brands

Benefit - beneshit. Make up for teenagers or people who know bugger all about makeup but like the twee packaging. And it stinks.

Max factor - nothing I have ever bought from that range works. Infinity lipstick made me look like dried up hag, the cream blush has texture of ronseal, eyeshadows are crap, foundations crap colours.

MOST of maybelline. I tried that Eraser stuff out of morbid curiosity, it looked awful, like I had smeared PVA glue on my face. However I have a cream blusher from there which I love.

Clarins. I just don't get it.

I have really dry skin, so finding foundation for me is a nightmare!
Illamasqua makes my skin look awful, unfortunately it's really the only one I have found that colour matches.

I do end up buying benefit a lot, simply because it's quite oily but the coverage is shite! I like posie tint though. :)

grumpypants · 20/06/2011 16:05

How weird - my whole face is Benefit and I look bee-yoo-ti-ful. [smug]

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 16:09

Ten-o-six cost a fortune.

I got mine free with an issue of My Guy or Look In or summat.

I had forgotten about Urban Decay. I love their eyeshadows, bit too glittery for day, but good stuff nonetheless.

Thanks for eyeliner info, II thought it was miracle stuff, but if spit works just as well I will carry on using that.

OOH OOH did anyone used to get make up by mail order (in the 90s) from Cosmetics To Go? They had a mascara which you spat on and used a little brush to paint it on. It was crap, mind you, but much fun spitting on it

I used to think all make up was prohibitively expensive.

Hence the popularity of Constance Carroll roll-on lipgloss - a pahnd from the market.

GetOrf I had bright red hair at the time, it didn't fit with BB's natural ethos. They suggested that if I didn't want to dye my hair I try MAC instead which I did and worked for them part time for 5 years.

To answer the magic potion questions - liquid eyeliner sealer makes it waterproof/smudgeproof whereas mixing it with water just makes it into a paste but no guarantee for it to last as well. There are a few brands that do similar things, including Illamasqua. I prefer to use them as a top coat rather than a mixer and they can be used to waterproof mascara too which is good because most waterproof mascara is rubbish.

StrawberryMewMew Illamasqua have just launched a new foundation this week which is supposed to be sublime. I may try to check it out this week if I get a chance.

StrawberryMewMew · 20/06/2011 16:17

HavingKittens Thanks for letting me know as I do really love their foundation. Only for me to wear it I have to use my microdermabrasion kit then moisturise then use loads of primer. :( Their powder was great though!

HipHopOpotomus · 20/06/2011 16:17

Loreal - cause it's simply crap. Like applying chemical waste.

I quite like some No 7 though, and it's a good price.

Best EVER buy (and most loved) was a MAC lippy compact with 8 diff colours. Never seen another one since drat it.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 20/06/2011 16:21

Cosmetics to Go rings a bell.

What was the French company that did Agnes B stuff mail order? I loved them. They stopped trading here years ago.

StrawberryMewMew · 20/06/2011 16:22

Ohhh, I just had a look at the Illamasqua website, that foundation looks great! Will be buying it when it's out. Thanks again HavingKittens!

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 20/06/2011 16:25

S'OK, found them

They had really good free gifts

hester · 20/06/2011 16:26

Yves Rocher, Jenai?

He just died, didn't he.

SummerRain · 20/06/2011 16:26

Astral was the first moisturiser my mom bought me as a tween Grin

horrendous stuff!

I have to defend No 7, their sensitive eyes mascara and liquid eyeliners are fab... haven't tried the other stuff yet though so can't comment.

Maybelline is utter shite, their mascara makes my eyes feel like someone has thrown acid in them and doesn't even look that good.

I can never find decent eyeshadows at all..... I've tried millions and they all vanish an hour after being applied.

wimpybar · 20/06/2011 16:27

i had that cosmetics to go block mascara thing, was definitely crap Grin had a weird little brush. i got loads from them but can't hardly remember what now! some weird soap to wash hair in i think

CountBapula · 20/06/2011 16:27

JenaiMarr that was Club des Createurs de Beaute (or some such ungainly name). I used to love Agnes B make-up. Cosmetics to Go was a bit like Lush - bath bombs with wacky names.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 20/06/2011 16:28

No, not Yves Rocher. But they have good free gifts, too. I always go to one of their stores when I'm in France.

It's really cheap but feels special because it's all French and that.

hester · 20/06/2011 16:29

Have you tried Chanel, SummerRain?

GetOrf, you're probably too young to know, but cake mascara had a big Moment in the late 70s. Rimmel did it, in square brown boxes.

Then Jackie magazine starting running warnings that a girl had grown mould on her eyelashes after eating a cheese sandwich then spitting into her mascara Shock Grin

AlfalfaMum · 20/06/2011 16:29

I despise No7, the entire skincare range, the foundations and tinted moisturiser give me a rash. Mascara fine though (slight back-pedal)

I haven't tried much Benefit make up, but I do like BeneTint and Bad Gal Lash

Thornykate · 20/06/2011 16:32

Agree that reckon, max factor are pants & I dont like loreal either. Or no7.

I like benefit lemon aid though.

CountBapula · 20/06/2011 16:32

X-post Jenai, just looked at your link - they still do the same lipstick I used in the late 90s, Beige Metal Rose, which is a delightful early-Friends muddy brown Grin Meeeeeeemoriiiieeeees ...

Thornykate · 20/06/2011 16:33

Revlon not reckon..... Sorry it's the spellchecker again

Thornykate · 20/06/2011 16:34

Wimpy I had that shampoo in a bar too. It made my hair like wire wool.

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 16:34

I think Lush is the new name from Cosmetics to Go (think CTG went bust or something).

Club creatuers de beaute or whatever it was called, yes that did look good, never ordered anything from them though.

Does anyone subscribe to glossybox? Tenner a month, you get a box of samples from Nars etc. Read about it in the paper and it looks interesting.

OP posts:
GetOrf · 20/06/2011 16:37

summer try Urban decay, Revlon or Lancome for eyeshadows. Really good pigment from all of them. Loreal eyeshadows are good as well. Avoid Rimmel, No7, any other cheap range, as they are shite imo.

OP posts:
GetOrf · 20/06/2011 16:38

Oh that shampoo soap was crap wasn't it.

Actually all that Cosmetics to go stuff was bollocks. Like Lush. That's bollocks an' all. Grin

OsbegaEthelwulf · 20/06/2011 16:41

hester the lemon scented cleanser was called Delph...I used to use that and ten o six and anne french "glow 5" face masks!
