Most detested makeup brands

Benefit - beneshit. Make up for teenagers or people who know bugger all about makeup but like the twee packaging. And it stinks.

Max factor - nothing I have ever bought from that range works. Infinity lipstick made me look like dried up hag, the cream blush has texture of ronseal, eyeshadows are crap, foundations crap colours.

MOST of maybelline. I tried that Eraser stuff out of morbid curiosity, it looked awful, like I had smeared PVA glue on my face. However I have a cream blusher from there which I love.

Clarins. I just don't get it.

I read as a teenager that Marilyn Monroe used thirteen different shades of lipstick to achieve the illusion of voluptuous lips. I went through a phase of making it fourteen by outlining in brown eyeliner Grin

BitOfFun · 20/06/2011 14:58

It was hard fitting them all in though- you had to basically paint little stripes with a tiny brush like those paint by numbers kits.

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 14:58

I can't bear mascara - I just buy any old cheap shit, or freebies.

I don't like the petrified spider look. I just want black lashes. I don't want them thickened, I don't like that look.

Or is it Chanel which is made in the same place as Bourjois?

GetOrf are you havin' a larf? I made a sarcy comment about this on the other thread we've just been speaking on!

There are a handful of large cosmetics companies who own lots of other brands. They don't all come from the same factory so are not in any way comparable in quality or ingredients.

Lancome is owned by L'Oreal. I can't imagine, especially after reading comments on The Body Shop makeup here, anyone voluntarily swapping their Lancome mascara or foundation for a Body Shop one.

I find some brands have products that I love and ones that I think are rubbish. The one brand who seem to be completely consistent in their shitness is Benefit. Also their do make up appointments in there like the Make up Artist brands but most of their staff aren't even make up artists. And as for letting someone with no make up skills or beauty training pluck my eyebrows... well, not on your nelly mate!

Chanel Eyeshadows are rubbish in my opinion. Hardly any pigment, just a whisper of the colour promised and a load of loose sparkly powder dropped halfway down the cheeks in a vain attempt to get more product on! But I love their foundations, eyeliners and lipglosses. Their lipsticks last about 20 minutes on me though. So it's all swings and roundabouts.

Laura Mercier lipsticks don't last long on me and make my lips hurt. But I love their foundations, tinted moisturisers & eyeshadows.

I like Clinique lipsticks but not keen on their skincare.

Bobbi Brown just wind me up with their Yellow foundation bullshit. Oh and the fact that that I went for an interview with them once and they said that I would have to dye my hair brown to get a job with them as they were all about natural. Yawn.

CountBapula · 20/06/2011 15:00

I know, I'm weird. I otherwise favour the natural, no make-up look, but my lashes look like a cross between Liza Minelli in Cabaret and the poster for A Clockwork Orange Blush

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 15:02

having did you really? Am I going insane I can't remember that? I remember agreeing with you re yellow foundations. Confused

How absurd that Bobby Brown told you to die your hair.

I don't believe that Chanel and Bourjois are one and the same btw, just was saying that I had read that on here.

What do you think of By Terry having (wants make up artist seal of approval)

BettySuarez · 20/06/2011 15:09

Anything by Clinique - feels like I have just had a chemical face peel Grin

Havingkittens · 20/06/2011 15:28

GetOrf, I'm sure it is lovely but every time i ask the price of something I fall on the floor and have to drag myself out of the shop whimpering! So I've never actually got as far as purchasing anything from them.

I've been trying their lipsticks on in the store and wearing them to see how they fare and they bleed terribly on me. I was hoping for £32 that would not be the case!

Countbapula I agree there is a lot to be said for cheaper mascara brands these days. Some of my recent favorites have included Max Factor's False Lash Effect and Masterpiece Max and even some Rimmel ones (shock horror!)

strawberryjelly · 20/06/2011 15:28

TattyD

why do you hate Clinique?

I used to have bad facial eczema and it was all i could use.

I use their moisturisers, sun block (City Block) , foundation, eye pencil and lippe/lip gloss. My skin's great and people ask me what I use!

I could afford more up market brands but like Clinique as it's allergy tested and perfume free- unlike say Lancome which is filled with perfume.

Havingkittens · 20/06/2011 15:29

GetOrf No, I thought you were saying that as a joke after the other thread. It was in my little list of Mumsnet Beauty Myths Wink lol.

Havingkittens · 20/06/2011 15:33

Strawberryjelly Clinique was the brand that comes up the most often when clients report having a bad reaction to skincare products. Which seems ironic considering its claims.

The allergy claims kind of depend what you allergic to I would imagine. Although people often confuse allergic reactions with sensitivity reactions. If you are sensitive to a product you will react straight away, whereas an allergy takes a day or so to manifest itself usually. If your reaction is to perfumed products that is more likely to be a sensitivity issue.

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 15:33

Having next time you go in Space NK ask 'em to make you up with Eclat Opulent. It is brilliant.

It costs £100 though. When I first bought it I had to go in the pub next door afterwards and have a vodka Grin

TattyDevine, nice to hear from a fellow Becca fan. I 'm ok for supplies as lucky enough ( I think) to live in London and often around South Ken where visit to their shop is a nice treat (in fact I think I feel a visit coming on !), or Fenwicks In Bond St, who also stock them . But always tend to mention they are not that easy to find when recommending them so people know the best thing to do is what you suggest .

Havingkittens · 20/06/2011 15:42

I don't think I want encouraging to spend £100 on foundation! Gulp! I think I need a lie down just thinking about that. I think I'd have to add a premium onto my prices to put that on anyone's face! lol.

bluebump · 20/06/2011 15:43

I have really sensitive skin but for some reason Clinique and their paint stripper style clarifying lotion really works for me! I like their mascaras too. I used to like Maybelline mascaras but I seem to be allergic to them now and they make my eyes itch.

I seem to be alone in liking Benefit, I only have Hollywood Glo (discontinued) and Benetint though and I did like the powder blusher 'dandelion', my skin looked great with that on - their mascara was terrible, all smudgy by the end of the day.

Barry M do the best nail polish, some great colours and not expensive.

BulletWithAName · 20/06/2011 15:44

Totally agree. Their lipsticks are great too!

hester · 20/06/2011 15:45

I love becca too! Fantastic bases.

I love Clinique lipsticks, but not the rest of their stuff.

I love Clarins skincare, but their make-up is just grannyish and awful.

No7 is a lifelong disappointment

Lipfinity is so drying and harsh, and the colour always looks awful on me.

I like Bobbi Brown base and eyeshadows, but the lipstick is awful.

I tend to use:
Foundation by M&S (Becca if flush)
Blush by Terry
Chanel eyeshadow (lovely pigment) or alternatively Laura Mercier
Rimmel mascara
Concealer by Benefit or Bobbi Brown
Lipstick by Clinique
Eyeliner by Bloom

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 15:49

I tried that clarifying lotion once, it was like that Ten-O-Six weedkiller I used as a teen. Too harsh for me.

OP posts:
JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 20/06/2011 15:57

I loved that Ten-O-Six stuff. I remember thinking it was really expensive.

It wasn't, was it? Grin

hester · 20/06/2011 15:57

It's like cleaning your face with paintstripper. Left mine all red and raw. And as for Dramatically Different moisturiser - thin, perfumed, yellow stuff - how on earth did that get to be so popular? I'd rather use Nivea.

hester · 20/06/2011 15:58

another one here who thought Ten-O-Six was a bit classy. That and Anne French cleansing milk, and Astral.

What was the lemon-scented stuff?

aquavit · 20/06/2011 16:00

GetOrf I think you are thinking of the Urban Decay transforming potion (makes eyeshadow into eyeliner supposedly - though if your shadow is decently pigmented you can do this using a wet liner brush, so I'm not sure what the advantages would be).

God yes (or rather NO) to that dark liner/beige lipstick look. It was the British equivalent to those horrid dark brown American mouths. Tamara Beckwith SHUDDER

CountBapula · 20/06/2011 16:01

God yes, that Dramatically Different stuff is shit.

superdollyfragilistic · 20/06/2011 16:02

I had the colourless liquid eyeliner stuff, bought it in Space NK.
Frankly spit works just as well
