I am wearing a white polo shirt. I have never felt so frumpy in my life.

I am sure I have seen women look nice in polo shirts of all colours. Okay, not stunningly glam, but perfectly fine for a normal day.

I look fucking horrendous.

Are there polo shirt do's and don'ts?

Is there any way to rescue the situation, or shall I shove it to the back of the wardrobe and Never Speak Of It Again?

OP posts:
Insomnia11 · 23/06/2011 13:23

I could carry one off if it was cut for women rather than a man.

Fimbo · 23/06/2011 14:00

MoreBeta, sounds like ladies who lunch in Henley Wink. Had a look at RL and still not doing it for me, at all. But hey each to their own.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 23/06/2011 14:16

I was Hmming at the women in (someone else's) Joules catalogue t'other day, and they have the figure for them! TBH, I think the whole polo shirt thing trancends mere body shape - you also have to exude Clarse (not saying you don't, OP Grin) and give the impression that you own a fleet (flock? shoal??) of horses. Esp the crazy-mad polo shirts with Crests and Chevrons and so on.

I bought a beige/taupe polo shirt with lycra back when I had the bod for it, to wear on a tour I was guiding round some ancient ruins. I thought it would make me look smart, efficient and give a slight hint of 1930's archaeologist. It did not. It made me look like a member of Hitler Youth. :-(

ReshapeWhileDamp · 23/06/2011 14:24

(of course, I probably shouldn't have been wearing my hair in plaits...)

Grin
quirrelquarrel · 23/06/2011 16:37

I don't like Joules stuff...esp. when people wear them with floaty light cardigans on top. Better if you have a light top and something heavy on top of that.

Tigresswoods · 23/06/2011 16:53

I play golf (as the name would suggest) so wear a lot of polo shirts as do the people I play with. I think being skinny helps. Also a nice longish one cut well will make all the difference. I favour A&F & Jack Wills.

waxlyrical · 23/06/2011 16:59

I must defend the humble polo shirt!! I have 2 from, (whispers), Boden and, despite being quite busty, I think they suit me. In pure rebellion against this thread I am proudly wearing one now!!

this is nearly what I look like how I like to think I look in mine Smile

elastamum · 23/06/2011 17:21

Well I will own up that I'm wearing a fitted blue one from fat face right now.

In my defence, I do own a herd of horses and a large pack of dogs! Grin

NorksAreMessy · 23/06/2011 17:44

elastamum you have the sole get out clause...a neddy

cruelladepoppins · 23/06/2011 20:25

I once bought and wore [whispers] a poloshirt dress. ShockBlush In coral pink. I think I wore it about three times before I gave up on it. It wasn't even flattering enough to do the gardening in ...!

moondog · 23/06/2011 20:37

I think a dress better than a shirt.

Miffter-golfing gear.

That a whole new area.
What is is it about golfing gear that makes it al lhideous?
And why is everywhere golfer a stone or so overweight?
All those blokes with big arses and chunky thinghs.

Yuck.

pointydog · 23/06/2011 20:43

polo shirts on women are horrid. V ugly sporty.

Bonsoir · 23/06/2011 20:46

Polo shirts are frightful on women. I even hate my DD in them (and I buy her the girlier versions, with puffed sleeves) - she wears them for sports and I hate that look!

chattymother · 23/06/2011 21:03

I have a work one too and it is so shapeless I feel many sizes bigger than I actually am - coupled with the tabard I have to wear it's a very sexy look!!

NorksAreMessy · 23/06/2011 21:06

Tabard = worse than polo shit

titferbrains · 23/06/2011 21:14

Norks, was that an excellent typo? Grin

Total no to polo shirts here. No offence, but I'm not a fucking games teacher.

NorksAreMessy · 23/06/2011 21:21

Deliberate typo, -titfer.
even games teachers look rubbish in them, unless they are horsing teachers!

meeper · 23/06/2011 21:22

GAY. and not in a good way! in a 'i want everyone to know my sexual preferences therefore I will wear a polo shirt... that should do it!' kind if a way.

Which is obviously fine if that's the look you're going for...

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 23/06/2011 21:36

We have unisex ones as part of the uniform at work. They are vile, and bright yellow. Dh wears polo shirts for work (not uniform) as they look slightly smarter than t-shirts, and he doesn't have to (so won't!) wear proper shirts. He looks nice Smile

muminthemiddle · 23/06/2011 21:53

I have never seen anyone look good in a polo shirt.

wileycoyote · 23/06/2011 23:21

The polo shirt needs to go straight into room 101...
WHY even try wearing one unless compulsory work-wear?

So many actual nice clothes to choose from.. Grin

BoosMaw · 23/06/2011 23:27

Has anyone seen he Land's End catalogue? Pretty much all of their womenswear falls into this debate. I need to find a link...

BoosMaw · 23/06/2011 23:29

Women's polo shirts galore

x2boys · 24/06/2011 07:12

i,m am now allowed to wear polo shirts instead of tunics at work [i,m anurse] i think a look a lot better in poloshirt then tight restrictive tunic and far more comfortable i would feel a bit daft however if i wore one outside work

orienteerer · 24/06/2011 07:16

I wish to buck the trend here.....I like my polo shirtsShock.
