I am wearing a white polo shirt. I have never felt so frumpy in my life.

I am sure I have seen women look nice in polo shirts of all colours. Okay, not stunningly glam, but perfectly fine for a normal day.

I look fucking horrendous.

Are there polo shirt do's and don'ts?

Is there any way to rescue the situation, or shall I shove it to the back of the wardrobe and Never Speak Of It Again?

I think having cap sleeves on a polo shirt like some of the ones I've seen in Jack Wills goes a long way to making them a bit more feminine... and undo as many buttons as you can get away with to prove the bolster you're smuggling is actually a bosom :o

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 11:35

Fimbo I know Jack Wills is such a cliche of overpriced clothes for overbite rahs, but their stuff is great.

I have some JW jeans and they are brilliant, and a few tops nicked from dd which fit very well. Plus the stuff washes well and lasts forever.

Buy it online though, don't go in the ghaslty shop (unless it is the cheapo outlet at Bicester)

DiNammic · 20/06/2011 11:36

WHY are you wearing it?

Is it PE?

Fimbo · 20/06/2011 11:43

I looked at the JW t-shirts and thought they were very thin and wouldn't wash well. Maybe I need to let dd have one after all. I wouldn't fit in them.

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 11:50

No, they wash brilliantly. DD still has some which are 3 years old, they look as good as new.

Get thee to Bicester, they are not as ridiculously expensive there. Hollister is also very similar, lasts ages as well, but a lot cheaper than JW.

LouMacca · 20/06/2011 11:54

lol DiNammic Grin

OP only girls who look like the model in your link are going to look good in a polo shirt...........

startail · 20/06/2011 12:08

Quite agree, unless you have a beautiful boyish figure and can walk down the street in riding clothes poloshirts are uniform only.

startail · 20/06/2011 12:10

DH looks nice in them, but he has broad shoulders and no nooks ( by the way where does that come from as slang for boobs, tits , breast etc. I'd never heard it before MN)

startail · 20/06/2011 12:11

Dory norks, said it was weird to meBlush

Fimbo · 20/06/2011 14:09

Thanks Geroff. Maybe need to have a weekend away for a visit to Bicester (any excuse - Grin). We have Hollister, I swear it is getting darker, last time I was in, I came out feeling really unwell.

Fimbo · 20/06/2011 14:10

Oops don't know where that rogue 'f' came from in your name - sorry!

startail · 20/06/2011 14:38

That was meant to be sorry not dorky one day I'll get the autocorrect to work

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 14:41

Oh the bloody 20 watt lightbulbs in Hollister.

You are right, I felt ill when I came out last time I went there, I blame it on all the teenage pheromones hurtling round Grin

AnyFucker · 20/06/2011 14:44

I can't see a fucking thing in Hollister

it smells nice, though Smile

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 15:00

I have to lift the labels to 2 inches in front of my eyes muttering 'how do they expect you to fucking see the prices' whilst dd shoots me beseeching Don't Show Me Up Mum looks.

MonkeyJungleConga · 20/06/2011 15:06

No-one in the world looks nice in a polo-shirt. They are the work of the devil. Have to wear one for work and it looks shite.

NorksAreMessy · 20/06/2011 19:46

If you have or are about to have some type of communion with a horse, you have my permission to wear a polo shirt. That is where the word polo comes from.
Otherwise, please don't.

Even if it is from a cool brand
Even if you have a lovely figure
Even if it is worn ironically

Please, just don't
Thank you

NorksAreMessy · 20/06/2011 19:47

Ditto for real life grown up men wearing rugby shirts. Just make me think of 'Tim-nice-but-dim'

Jonnyfan · 20/06/2011 20:23

Ha, speaking of dark shops, had to feel my way round Abercrombie and Fitch it was so DARK...and LOUD...and Perfumed..

Agree about Polos, t-shirts are even worse on me.

Helltotheno · 20/06/2011 22:28

lol at norksaremessy! Unfortunately I have to wear these monstrosities for one of my sports and I shudder involuntarily when I put it on....
In saying that, I'd say I don't look a total disaster in them, even tho I hate em. Key is nice and tight otherwise they're baggy, frumpy, all that stuff...

fluffles · 20/06/2011 22:32

fitted and navy look ok so and they must be just the right length.

i'm a hour glass with slimmish (relative to hips and boobs) waist and i quite suit them. the v neck and collar gives structure.

having said that, it's a v. casual look. sundays and parks only.

Fimbo · 21/06/2011 10:32

Oops just hunting through my wardrobe and came across a 'seasalt' polo shirt in navy. Just shows how often I ever wear it. I always thought 'seasalt' was quite hip. Then I went to Cornwall on holiday and discovered the shop and how wrong I was. Dh was very childish in that shop that day. Grin

Don't waste money on the dye.

You can wear it ONLY if you are going to do real sport...
...on a horse

Sesalt is just White Stuff that hasn't gone mainstream yet

moondog · 21/06/2011 22:16

This is very funny.
lmao at Getorf
'Don't buy a polo shirt from Joules unless you are 55 and have completely given up.'

I have just brought a frog green one for my nephew but he is a gorgeous strapping tanned 20 year old.

There are many items of clothing that one cannot get away with as one ages if one is to retain a shred of dignity.

Crocs
Denim skirts
Tye dye
T shirts ( I spent all my 20s in t shirts and fuck me,I was such a sight i should have been shot on sight. I am plucking up the courage to wear them this summer only because I will be speniding it in heavy manual
labour on a farm. Even so, I am shaky about it.)
