Is this ok for a wedding?

here

It's a posh wedding in a French chateau, all dayer and on until 3am (gulp) Lots of skeletal immaculate French women, but they wear black at weddings don't they? I thought it looked rather chic.

How would I accessorise?

longislandicetea · 14/04/2011 20:07

Funeral! Sorry Try again :)

GeorgeEliot · 14/04/2011 20:08

i like that dress a lot.

i would wear it with very flashy earrings and very high nude shoes and bag.

cybbo · 14/04/2011 20:08

George speaks sense

ladysybil · 14/04/2011 20:09

my french flatmate was agahast when i showed her my black outfit to be worn at traditional pakistani wedding. that it was trimmed with gold and red didnt matter. she couldnt get over its wrongness
i love the dress though.

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 14/04/2011 20:11

I know Italians tend to wear black to weddings not sure bout French
Not sure about the dress TBH says afternoon tea to me not sure why though

longislandicetea · 14/04/2011 20:11

I love the dress too and george is speaking sense but still think funeral

breadandhoney · 14/04/2011 20:11

Lovely dress. Nothing wrong with wearing black to weddings these days. I wore a black Karen Millen dress not too dissimilar to this to my dad's wedding 2 years ago. I was a little anxious about the colour but there ended up being a few others in black and I was glad I had gone with what I liked.

Go for it.

Jealous of the French chateau wedding!!

headfairy · 14/04/2011 20:15

Problem is that I don't suit very many colours. I tend to look good in either gunmetal or grey, maybe an eau de nil, dark green. Can occasionally get away with the right kind of red. Mostly earthy colours though which aren't terribly summery. I know black isn't either, but I will have already spent two weeks in the south of France so will have a killer tan :o

Killer tan=get away with any colour

Sparkletastic · 14/04/2011 20:23

I immediately thought tres chic for a funeral or work. Also a bit nylon looking. Are you sure you only suit those colours - why do you think so? Eau de nil or red would look lovely with a tan though.

headfairy · 14/04/2011 20:26

sparkletastic, I have tried every colour under the sun. I can't wear anything primary, can't wear yellow at all. Blue only works when I've got a tan (got very yellow skin) and then kind of royal blue really (think of Kate's engagement dress). Otherwise it's sludgy colours really. Browns but no beige, no nude, no cream. Can't do any of them due to sallow skin.

It's silk and cotton so might have to go and cop a feel to see if it's nylony in rl.

stressheaderic · 14/04/2011 20:34

I have a dress v similar to OP's.
Was £12 from Primark.

headfairy · 14/04/2011 20:36

those are nice dresses on mint velvet, but I wish they'd show the flaming dresses on a model, or even just a shop dummy. I can't see where they're likely to fall on the knee. I've got shocking knees, lots of scars from surgery, so ideally I want something knee length, or just below. Also got early 40's wibbles about my upper arms so would like something with a teeny sleeve.

I went to posh French wedding in chateau very many years ago - can remember being quite surprised that people weren't as dressed up as they would be at the equivalent English wedding.

Can't remember if they wore black though.

But if it is going on into the wee small hours I reckon that black is OK.

headfairy · 14/04/2011 20:48

I could borrow some jewellery from my mum, she has Proper Jewels. The type insurance companies make you install a safe in your house for (gifts from clients, she's very lucky!) so perhaps wearing £40k of diamonds will make up for it slightly dressed down :o

What about pink?

tethersegg · 14/04/2011 21:08

Actually, I don't like that pink one as much.

vintageteacups · 14/04/2011 21:10

how about this variation

vintageteacups · 14/04/2011 21:11

If they are French Catholic, then I think it may be more funeral-like and may offend. This is only a thought though - not entirely sure?

lollystix · 14/04/2011 21:15

Have no issue with black at wedding but when I opened the link I immediately thought funeral. It's a nice dress but not chic black - more maudlin black.... Sorry

tethersegg · 14/04/2011 21:26

Grey?
