At 5ft6 and a Size 20 can I wear a Maxi Dress?

I need something for two weddings this year. I hate having to 'dress' but it must be done. There isn't one bit of my body I am happy with at the minute but efforts need to be made and I'm prepared to splash out a touch to wear to both occassions. There won't be any of the same guests at the events and I'll make sure, as always, I'm behind the camera!!

I've been lured in by a pretty fecking expensive maxi dress and wondered if it's worth while even trying it.

These are child free weddings so I won't even have my gorgeous and impecibly dressed DC's to hide behind [meep]

That next dress looked fab - very tempted for my nephews 21st dinner... what are the sizing like in Next - M&S generous or smaller?

BibiBelle · 02/04/2011 21:02

I never find them over generous but then I may be kidding myself more often than notBlushGrin

I think this particular dress is quite generous, although I'd love to think it isn't, so please feel free to tell me it comes in really tiny Grin

HippyHippopotamus · 04/04/2011 17:33

wubbly i love that one, well found!

bibi well done with HofF, are we doing a shoe search for you now? Grin

wubblybubbly · 04/04/2011 17:47

Thanks Hippy Smile Even my mum said I looked fantastic and that never happens. She said she didn't recognise me, so a sort of backhanded compliment really Grin

BibiBelle · 04/04/2011 20:15

wubbly - your mother and my father went to the same charm school. I told my dad that I'd bought some dresses and he said he wouldn't recognise me!! Grin [git]

Hips - shoes ahoy!! Although due to the voucher best if from HofF Grin

oh yes, i'm good at opinions Grin

polyhymnia · 06/04/2011 16:09

Bibibelle - sorry if I've missed this, but what did you think of the Anna Scholz dess when it arrived?

BibiBelle · 06/04/2011 16:39

Hi Poly, I didn't post about it, I forgot sorry! In conparison to the Kaliko it was an absolute nothing. For the money it cost I felt the material should have been better quality. I got the impression the minute I moved it would cling in all the wrong places. I didn't hate it, I just wasn't fussed at all.

polyhymnia · 06/04/2011 16:49

Thanks - that's exactly the experience I've had the few times I've tried Anna Scholz. The quality seems not very good for the £££ charged and, though it's supposed to be a specialist plus size retailer, the clothes don't seem very flattering. I thought it was just me.

Hope you're enjoying your Kaliko dress. My Size 8 friend has just bought one of theirs (different style but very nice) for a wedding, but didn't know they did larger sizes until you posted!

BibiBelle · 06/04/2011 17:35

I didn't either! Someone linked it further up, am on my phone so can't check! I got it from house of fraser's who also stock Alexon dresses in larger sizes Smile

I am loving this thread - as a 5ft 7 size 22. Lots of nice dress ideas.

Your dresses are lovely BibiBelle.

Now I am tempted by that Next dress. Need something to cover arms though. Anybody spot anything?

polyhymnia · 06/04/2011 17:51

Yes, I like the khaki Next dress too but would want to cover arms. Think wubblybubbly said she got a shrug to go with it but not sure if she meant at Next too ?
Bibi, did you say you ordered the maxi version of that patterned Asos Curve tea dress on a black background? If so, interested to know what you think as my finger has hovered over that a few times!

wubblybubbly · 06/04/2011 17:58

Buda, I found this shrug from Peacocks for a tenner Shock

It looks really good with the Next dress as it covers the arms but doesn't hide any of the nice frontage. I'd never heard of Peacocks, but after buying my dress I had to pass it to get back to the car, so it would've been rude not to pop in Grin

My Asda dress came yesterday, the £12 Barbara Hulanicki one. I actually do rather like it! The fabric is lovely, nice and heavy and it hangs well. It's probably more an autumn/winter dress tbh, it'll look great with boots, but an absolute bargain all the same.

keepingupwiththejoneses · 06/04/2011 18:20

If your really not feeling the maxi dress thing, how about a jumpsuit this is a great site. I have been buying for a few years, cost and quality is great, with lots of choice.

BibiBelle · 08/04/2011 12:17

Hi Buda (it's dizzydixies - I've namechanged Smile)

I almost found a FAB pair of purple shoes this morning but DH did kindly point out to me that I'd fall off them HmmGrin

wubbly - very Envy re the ASDA dress, it was sold out in my size when I went for a nosey.

keepingupwith - that link took me to 3 pages worth of clothes, but it was another site I'd never seen - thanks!

I've managed to loose 4lbs so far so fingers crossed the stomach won't be quite so horrific when it comes time to go!
