At 5ft6 and a Size 20 can I wear a Maxi Dress?

I need something for two weddings this year. I hate having to 'dress' but it must be done. There isn't one bit of my body I am happy with at the minute but efforts need to be made and I'm prepared to splash out a touch to wear to both occassions. There won't be any of the same guests at the events and I'll make sure, as always, I'm behind the camera!!

I've been lured in by a pretty fecking expensive maxi dress and wondered if it's worth while even trying it.

These are child free weddings so I won't even have my gorgeous and impecibly dressed DC's to hide behind [meep]

why are there no nice seperates? the last time I wore a dress was 8yrs ago when I got married and I would happily never wear one ever again

no MrsCB, the price has been making my eyes water. I'm trying to justify it as £90 per wedding plus a resale on ebay.

I liked the fact it doesn't have the usual band right under the bust which doesn't do my any favours at all

if it "has" to be maxi
what about this fella?

MrsCampbellBlack · 26/03/2011 19:30

Compared to this its a bargain Smile

BibiBelle · 26/03/2011 19:33

it doesn't HAVE to be anything. I'm aware beggars can't be choosers when only f506 and built like a barrel.

I normally end up at weddings in a pair of linen wide legged trousers and a tunc top. I just wanted to look like I meant what I was wearing this time Grin

Rannaldini - it's lovely but it's a halter neck special order with no returns and at that price that's not something I would risk. It also once again has a band right under the bust. Lovely as it is and I love the colour too

I got the huge pants from next - they're a bugger to get on and off (quite comedy to be honest) but worth it for the smooth-ness..... I found the M&S ones torturous!!

BibiBelle please can you get the anna scholz - its stunning and will be a lovely quality and perfect for a posh wedding......

BibiBelle · 26/03/2011 19:35

Lol MrsCB that's true - now I would obviously get that but it only goes up to a 16 and I just can't carry red Wink

right
5ft6 isn't v short and a size 20 isn't that big
47% of the population are a 16 or bigger

often maxis are a crime against fashion on anyone

look here for some more ideas

BooBooGlass · 26/03/2011 19:43

We have this arguement on pretty much every larger lady thread. A size 20 is that big. Just because 50% of people are over size 16, doesn't make it a great choice. When I was a size 20 I was 5 stone overweight. ANd I'm 5 foot 7.

apple99 · 26/03/2011 19:45

I think maxi's can look great on any shape and size if they fit you properly (length, bust, not to voluminous etc). It's just about finding the right one for you.

This one is on my summer wishlist and I am a size 16/18 and 5'8 so no supermodel!!

wubblybubbly · 26/03/2011 19:46

Well that's really helpful BooBoo. Perhaps anyone over a size 14 should just refuse wedding invites?

BibiBelle · 26/03/2011 19:46

BooBooGlass - I'm not on here asking an opinion about my choice to be this size. I'm asking if I will look like a 6 sleeper tent in a maxi dress.

I am fully fecking aware of what height/weight I am thank you and I'm doing something about it after waiting over a year for the medical permission to do so. I know how much I have to loose.

In the meantime I would like to look NICE so am asking for help.

please don't start. people like you are the reason I've barely stepped off my antenatal thread for a year Sad

Rannaldini · 26/03/2011 19:48

not that helpful booboo
point was that there are lots of lovely things out there and that op is far from unusual in size or height

wubblybubbly · 26/03/2011 19:51

Bibi, if you've got good legs, would you not consider showing them off?

MrsCampbellBlack · 26/03/2011 19:51

Bibi - really do ignore it.

Honestly I'm 5ft and a small size 8 and got told repeatedly last year on here that I was delusional if I thought I looked good in a maxi dress.

You know what - I did look good so there Grin

Honestly if it was left to some people we'd all be in a nice tunic in a jolly colour Wink

HotGiggity · 26/03/2011 19:52

What about something like this?

I know the sizing only goes up to an 18, but with a super curvy you might get away with it?

HotGiggity · 26/03/2011 19:54

P.S I'm a size 18 and 5' 7'' and have an animal maxi dress which I love...

Rannaldini · 26/03/2011 20:01

completely off topic but who knew calvin klein did plus sizes?
here

MrsMc82 · 26/03/2011 20:05

Ffs BooBoo let's just keep it a thread about finding BibiBelle a fabulous dress (.....no one ever feels the need to comment if a 5'9" size 8 needs to find something flattering so they? so do BibiBelle the same bloody courtesy)?

Rannaldini · 26/03/2011 20:08

okay
what about this fella
they do a fitting service and this dress is raved about on US sites

MrsMc82 · 26/03/2011 20:17

Love this one Rannaldini...... Are u in the US btw do these sites ship to the uk?

BlooferLady · 26/03/2011 20:18

BooBoo congratulations on your weight loss. However, statistics suggests that more than 90% of people who lose substantial amounts of weight regain it in time. You might like to rein in your smuggery, 'cos that's a hell of a bait for karma.

berri · 26/03/2011 20:22

Really like the chocolate lacy number on the website Rannaldini linked to earlier - looks v flattering.

Rannaldini · 26/03/2011 20:29

I put on loads of weight at one time and the clothes in the uk were so disgusting that I had no choice but look elsewhere
Germany Holland were perfect for me as I was tall and the weight went on all over
It's worth really investigating as different countries seem to cater for different shapes heights etc

I use this site to have anything sent from the us

SkaterGrrrrl · 26/03/2011 20:29

Wear what you like love, and ignore the fashion police. I'm sure you'll look gorgeous.
