At 5ft6 and a Size 20 can I wear a Maxi Dress?

I need something for two weddings this year. I hate having to 'dress' but it must be done. There isn't one bit of my body I am happy with at the minute but efforts need to be made and I'm prepared to splash out a touch to wear to both occassions. There won't be any of the same guests at the events and I'll make sure, as always, I'm behind the camera!!

I've been lured in by a pretty fecking expensive maxi dress and wondered if it's worth while even trying it.

These are child free weddings so I won't even have my gorgeous and impecibly dressed DC's to hide behind [meep]

Bibi I have messaged you on fb with a suggestion :) Personally I'm not feeling the Anna Scholtz on you, but it is all about what makes you feel amazing after all.

droves · 26/03/2011 20:44

Regardless of size , any woman will look awful without the right underwear on under her clothes.

You could spend £1000's on an outfit and look like a bag of rags if you dont have properly fitting undies.

I often find the right dress size in slimming shapewear/undies gives that . stuffed sausage look. You dont want the flesh oozing out the big pants look.
Try a size larger in shapewear (not bras), it avoids the escaping muffintop /buttcheek.
Only when you are happy with the fit of the undies should you go outfit shopping.

Then you will find a dress you will love and look beautiful in .

Happy shopping !

wubblybubbly · 26/03/2011 20:52

Bibi, I hope you're okay?

What about this?

If you like the print, I think the style could be really flattering, ruched waist, low neckline for your fab boobs and a few quid cheaper than the Anna Scholtz. The other good thing is, you could also pop into Debenhams and try it on.

BibiBelle · 26/03/2011 20:53

right, kids in bed - time to get back to the online shopping Smile

droves - I agree, I'm not a fan of the sucky in because of a few reasons. I'm normally too hot anyway and those are just sweat inducing. I have such rare nights out these days that when we do have an occassion DH and I will indulge in a drink and an occassional hotel room - looking svelt isn't more important to me that being able to relax with my friends, wonderful other half and going for a pee or quickie depending on the occassion GrinWink The only ones I've used with any success are the bodysuits but then they don't do the boobs any favours either!

Thanks for the message Star, am having a look.

To everyone else, thank you. This is (pathetically) a big thing for me. Both going to these events, we've turned down all other offers recently for various reasons AND stepping off my lovely ante natal thread for the first time in ages. You've all been lovely Smile

yes, sorry wubbly. DH is on late shift so the DC and I were dancing to 'so you think you can dance' before the battle of all 3 of them to bed. Never in a hurry on a Sat night esp when the clocks are going to skip back - they'll be up at 5am at this rate Hmm

ooh I like that one too - not sure our Debehams is up to much though. The have Phase 8 & Coast of course but they stop at an 18 and I would be terrified that someone smaller would be in the same dress as is obligatory for all wedding outfits - monsoon/phase 8/coast !

wubbly that dress is devine ... love it ! Grin, think it would suit blondes, brunettes and redheads . Beautiful ... love the neckline !

droves · 26/03/2011 21:00

Maidenform does good shapewear ... its a bit more flattering than most and breathable , not too tight and comfy.

orienteerer · 26/03/2011 21:06

BibiBelle....clocks "spring forward" (& "fall back") by the way......

wubblybubbly · 26/03/2011 21:06

Shapewear always disappoints me. I think my expectations are too high. If I don't look like Marilyn Monroe I feel I've wasted my cash Grin

Carrotsandcelery · 26/03/2011 21:08

wubbly I looooove that dress. We are shopping tomorrow so I may have to wander in and have a look while dh and the dcs go off to choose a mother's day gift Grin

BibiBelle · 26/03/2011 21:09

LOL good point orienteerer Blush

and for whoever asked about my legs - they are fine too. Great shape and toned HOWEVER I cannot emphasise how white they are - they have not seen the light of day in YEARS. They are beyond white - more like translucent with a hint of blue and I'd need to start varnishing them now so as not to outshine the bride's white gown!

I am a tall size 16 and wore maxi dresses last Summer before I saw photographs of myself. Blush But you may be different.

I always think curvier women look fab in 50s prom style dresses- Is that something you'd consider?

ConstanceFelicity · 26/03/2011 21:14

I have this style of dress and i't very very flattering (surprisingly).

BibiBelle · 26/03/2011 21:18

Constance it's nice but I'm not sure it's right for the weddings iyswim? Love prom dresses. all dresses in general terrify me if I'm honest.

ConstanceFelicity · 26/03/2011 21:21

Yes, I do know what you mean. I am a consummate underdresser :)

BibiBelle · 26/03/2011 21:28

this is pretty but I've had it drummed in to me that I should always have a v neck for more flattering cleavage. I think my bust would just look like a shelf in this

OP posts:
Carrotsandcelery · 26/03/2011 21:35

That is a beautiful dress bibi. I know what you mean about the v neckline but you could create that with the right necklace.

BibiBelle · 26/03/2011 21:35

oh and off the beaten track again ladies - H&M are doing a new larger sized range again over here

wubblybubbly · 26/03/2011 21:37

Bibi, that is gorgeous, very feminine. Why not try it on and see?

This website is great for searching. You can put pretty much anything in the search and filter the results by all sorts of criteria.

Carrots, if you do go in, please report back and let us know what it's like in the flesh.

Carrotsandcelery · 26/03/2011 21:39

If I get access and find it I shall report back - it is hit and miss what they stock up here.

MrsMc82 · 26/03/2011 21:58

LOVE the spotty dress :)

Laughing at the thing about huge shaping pants not being practical for a quickie - Dh and I were at a wedding couple of years ago when we had a quickie in the lull between meal and night do (in our room of course) the huge pants did not go back on after that - just couldnt be arsed wrestling myself back in to them but by that time had a few Wine 's anyway so wasnt that bothered about it :o :o

BibiBelle · 26/03/2011 21:59

Carrotsandcelery we're the same. I'm in the town on Tues so I might pop in. I tend to stick a whack of stuff on the credit card, have it delivered to the house, try it all on. Hate it and take it all back. Saves me the hassle of the changing rooms and assistants Blush

BibiBelle · 26/03/2011 22:00

see MrsMc - I married Irish so we've normally too much wine prior to the meal BlushGrin
