The reason I hate debenhams is that the children clothing sizes are awful - all over the place without and consistency, and alot of them are teeny tiny.

Plus Debenhams.com once charged me £3.50 shipping on a pair of childrens socks Angry

BaggedandTagged · 27/01/2011 13:44

Debenhams was a private equity buy out. The management team had previously been very successful with (I think) Homebase, or some similar type of retail business, but the cost cutting model just hasn't worked with Debenhams at all. You cant cut capital expenditure and staff to the wire and expect to compete with (eg) M&S. The place ends up looking like a jumble sale- clothes not put back, tatty fittings etc.

LindaLaHughes · 27/01/2011 13:46

slit your wrists and die, come on that is extreme. It is only a shop for Christ sake and no one is making you go there!

ginmakesitallok · 27/01/2011 13:46

Ours has the only Phase Eight in 50 miles - so I like it [sticks tongue out emoticon]

FooffyShmoofer · 27/01/2011 13:46

icod where do you shop? (if you don't mind me asking).

You have a special kind of hate for Debenhams and after wandering around the town centre aimlessly getting nowhere I need new ideas.

I believe I used the word "soulless" to describe Debenhams to DH who looked like he wanted to curl up and cry whilst rocking in a rail of Maine New England denim.

Heathcliffscathy · 27/01/2011 13:47

oooo interesting back story bagged.

makes sense of it all.

Heathcliffscathy · 27/01/2011 13:49

there is no shop that is ideal for me.

i want somewhere that is like jigsaw used to be before it went superfrump (wtf happened there?)

it doesn't exist...the closest is all saints but i just can't wear the stuff, it's too floaty, asymmetric, etc...doesn't work on me.

FluffyMummy123 · 27/01/2011 13:49

Would it be wrong of me to link to something even more hideous clotheswise?
May I have permission, nobody is eating their lunch I hope?

Francagoestohollywood · 27/01/2011 13:53

Oh the Debenhams in Exeter was rather depressing. Not as depressing as Next though. I still occasionally have nightmares about the Exeterian (???) shopping scene Grin

tethersend · 27/01/2011 13:53

You'll all miss it when it's gone you know.

I fucking love Debenhams.

GORGEOUSX · 27/01/2011 13:55

You're so right icod - The most awful shop where they are overly-concerned about whether or not you deserve a carrier bag.

And yes, full of cloned Mrs. Slocombes who look very disapproving at you when they see that you already have an M & S carrier bag with room left to squeeze another item in. They're more interested in tut-tutting when you say, actually, yes, you would like a Debenhams carrier bag for the toaster you've just given them £50 for.

And lots more disapproval when you politely decline to take out a Debenhams card.

All in all this shop is staffed by disapproving old bags who don't mind in the slightest about discussing trivia with their fellow shop "assistants" whilst you wait in a very long queue, to eventually be told,

"this lady's returning something and it may take some time - perhaps you'd like to go to the only other staffed till on the other side of the shop..... er.... and I hope you don't expect to get a carrier bag."

It's a fucking awful shop staffed by truly awful people.

CatIsSleepy · 27/01/2011 13:55

anyone remember C&A? now there was a depressing shopping experience

gap annoys me because it can be great but sometimes it is just really really dull

Francagoestohollywood · 27/01/2011 13:56

Gap can be uber dull, I agree. Nice jeans though.

mackereltaitai · 27/01/2011 13:56

I think if you spend long enough in debenhams you can usually find something OK. Not much of a slogan, that.

Did they put John Rocha on a 20-year retainer or something?

FooffyShmoofer · 27/01/2011 13:58

Thankyou. I shall peruse those but as you say there is currently NOTHING out there.

I am in a clothing slump.

BaggedandTagged · 27/01/2011 13:58

"anyone remember C&A? now there was a depressing shopping experience"

but they did manage to corner the market for budget ski wear that didnt actually keep you warm or dry

Fimbo · 27/01/2011 13:58

I never ever go in my local one. It's like an expensive branch of Primark.

RIZZ0 · 27/01/2011 13:58

ARSE!
Just realised I have a Maine New England dressing gown Hmm

Fimbo · 27/01/2011 14:00

Oh just remembered my mum used to be a member of their gold club and they had a "lounge" you could use with free tea and coffee (from a machine). We used to take dd in there and feed her.

Fimbo · 27/01/2011 14:02

Still available in the Glasgow store I see:-

Gold Card Lounge and lockers
Gold Card Lounge and lockers
As a Debenhams Gold Cardholder you can take a break from shopping and relax in our comfortable lounges, and use our secure lockers to store your bags while you shop. This exclusive service is available in selected stores only.

RIZZ0 · 27/01/2011 14:02

There are departments in my old local Debenhams where you feel as though you're the first person to get the escalator up that far in many, many years.

Fair play to them in one respect, once bought a top for delivery from the website. It was bobbins (obv), and the wrong colour. They were very nice about it and sent a courier to collect it.

FluffyMummy123 · 27/01/2011 14:03

BHS lighting
secret treasure

AND their swim accessories etc are BARGAINOUS
so if you want a hat/coverup dress skrit affair
is vg

RIZZO I have a jasper Conran dress and a Betty Jackson Black top. No Blush needed surely.

I bet if everyone dug down deep, really deep, really really deep, we have ALL bought something there. At some point?
