I used to love Ralf Lauren Safari but now its discontinued.

I like quite heavy and strong perfumes - tell me what I should buy please!

I love Beautiful(estee lauder) been wearing it for years. For going out I wear Magnifeque(Lancome). Both strong and last for ages. Sensuous(estee lauder) is also lovely.

Biscuitscoco · 04/01/2011 22:14

Guerlain Acqua alegoria cherry blossom is lovely

lal123 · 04/01/2011 22:17

voyage de hermes is lovely - unisex fragrance, smells of coriander and ginger to me. Bit pricey though - just bought a bottle think it was about £50 for 35ml

ZacharyQuack · 04/01/2011 22:17

Kai is lovely, as is Calvin Klein Beauty.

aristocat · 04/01/2011 22:23

Diesel Fuel for life here tis gorgeous Smile

AnyFucker · 04/01/2011 22:34

I just couldn't use "kai"

every time I dabbed it I would get a vision of Mr Fucking Rooney

CameronCook · 04/01/2011 22:48

Chanel no 19 - is gorgeous

moccachoccachino · 04/01/2011 22:50

Another vote for Flowerbomb

midori1999 · 04/01/2011 23:11

I wear Flowerbomb. People often ask me what it is and then buy it themselves, so I assume I smell nice when I wear it. It's quite light and fresha nd unsuprisngly floral. It's quite a 'young' perfume in that it's not old ladyish, but also probably not what teenagers would wear.

missmartha · 05/01/2011 00:20

Any of the old Guerlain classics. Apres l'Ondee and Mitsouko are wonderful.

Chanel do great scent too. Take your pick, if it's been around for a long time, it's for a good reason.

hatesponge · 05/01/2011 00:27

Must de Cartier is my favourite.

droves · 05/01/2011 00:33

GUCCI envy is like catpiss gone off ...honestly its rank.

The old gucci (square bottle , brown box) was the nicest by far , smells like ammeretto and sandlewood ..yum.
guccu guilty is nice
flora by gucci is flowery old lady type

for staying power no perfume can beat YSL OPIUM.

CamelToeAndWine · 05/01/2011 00:34

Estee Lauder Sensuous - either the regular one or the new "Sensuous Noir". Both gorgeous.

YSL "Belle D'Opium".

Gucci Guilty.

Agent Provocateur is real "love it or hate it" stuff. It's actually meant to smell like "The morning after", apparently. Either you'll agree, and think it smells musky and sexy, or you'll think it smells of musty old lady's minge.

droves · 05/01/2011 00:35

i thought safari was for blokes ?
ex-h used to wear it.Confused

otchayaniye · 05/01/2011 09:17

Hermes Hermessence Ambre Marguile
Lutens Ambre Sultan, Chergui, Sa Majeste de Rose, A La nuit, Datura Noir, Tubereuse Criminelle
Caron Parfum Sacre, Narcisse Noir, Epices Noir
Chanel No 19 and No 22 and Cuir de Russie
Creed Rose Bulgarie
Lancome Mille et une Rose
Patou Joy
Diorissimo and Diorella
L'Artisan Mure et Musc

RhodaMorgenstern · 05/01/2011 09:33

Heavy-ish, gorgeous and classic scents are Arpege by Lanvin and Paloma Picasso. Both are completely divine but I don't know if available in Boots.

kerstina · 05/01/2011 09:39

Jean paul gaultierre is my favourite. I love Coco too but find it quite heavy .Also love the body shops white musk if you want something cheaper but just as lovely.
I love coconut and vanilla smells anyone know a perfume that smells of these please ?

animula · 05/01/2011 11:33

otchayanine - What is "tubereuse criminelle" like (I've read the reviews but would like your account!)?

I love tuberose generally, and wear Frederick Malle "Carnal Flower". I love CF.

I am drawn to TC but unless there is somewhere offering samples in London that I don't know about, I think I'll have to buy it "blind" (or the olfactory equivalent).

Hence the asking for a review.

otchayaniye · 05/01/2011 12:39

I would gladly send you a sample as it comes in a bell jar and not a spray ? except I have practically none left and it wouldn?t decant. I would love to try Carnal Flower. I have Une Fleur de Cassie but that was so eyewateringly expensive I cannot justify another one.
You could try lesscenteurs.com for a sample (they do them for three pounds) but as it?s a bell jar one it is hard to track down. You may find it in Roja Dove in Harrods (not the main perfume hall but upstairs). There is a website that does decants ? I can?t remember off the top of my head but will post back if I remember.

You can also send off for the Lutens wax sample booklet. It?s free if you write a nice note to:
Les Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido, 142 Galerie de Valois, 25 rue de Valois, 75001 Paris, or by phone: 33 (0) 1 49 27 09 09. You could even ask them for a decant and explain why you want it. They may offer one if you can?t get to Paris.

Have you tried Beyond Love by Kilian? That?s also a soliflore tubereuse and rated as the best by Luca Turin.

As for Tubereuse Criminelle, it starts off with petrol and menthol (tinges of Olbas oil) and as that fades (I like that TCP-ish note anyway) the most beautiful heady soliflore tuberose establishes itself. It?s not gardenia-laden, which so many so-called tuberose perfumes are. It?s cool and quite sharp. Sorry, need to smell it again to get inspiration.

You could buy unseen from ebay when it comes up as if you hate it you?re guaranteed a speedy resale?

lorelilee · 05/01/2011 12:48

OI DROVES - Gucci Envy most certainly does not smell like cat piss - that's my 'evening' smell. It's lovely - bit ferny/citrusy and I think it complements my day perfume of Jo Malone Grapefruit perfectly!

However, my friend has just recently started wearing Tom Ford White Patchouli and it's GORGEOUS.

oldwomanwholivedinashoe · 05/01/2011 19:34

animula · 05/01/2011 20:11

otchayaniye - thank you for the reply.

I have never heard of the Kilian perfume and will definitely go hunting.

I see I now have little map of London marked out for a future quest!

otchayaniye · 05/01/2011 20:34

Well enjoy Animula when you do make it. Roja Dove is amazing. I told my husband I liked Tabac Blond and the poor chap went off to Harrods only to be hushed upstairs to some black basalt vault sectioned off with a red velvet rope to be served by someone who looked like the boy singing 'Tomorrow Belongs to Me' from 'Cabaret' and slunk out several hundred quid poorer.

Les Scenteurs in Belgravia (71 Elizabeth St, off Sloane St) will do free samples not unlimited, I don't think but several. And they will guide you according to your likes. They are knowledgeable.

Selfridges is quite good for rarer perfumes, as is Harrods. Liberty's stocks all the Malle perfumes too.

Send off for the wax sample. Has Tubereuse Criminelle inside as well as about 15 others. Took about a week to arrive. Could ask for the lipstick one (Lutens lipsticks cost about 50-60 quid, I kid you not!) while you're at it.

Also, if you visit Picadilly seek out Ormonde Jayne's store in The Royal Arcade (while you're there try Penhaligons which is in the same bit). Her Ormonde Woman, Orris Noir and white soliflores are amazing.

ENormaSnob · 05/01/2011 20:36
