The ins and outs of knitted dresses

This is my first ever post in S&B, and I am somewhat terrified by clothes/make up/all that jazz so go easy on me please!

I need something to wear on a night out. I think we can get away with jeans and A Nice Top, but I was thinking about a knitted dress with some patterned tights.

Thing is - I'm very much a scruffy bugger casual person, I wear jeans day to day with t-shirts or the occasional casual shirt. I don't know where to start. I can't even find a Nice Top.

What I want to know is: knitted dresses - what are the rules? Being a fatty size 18 with large breasts, is it stupid to even try one? Should certain shapes stay away from them?
I have to buy online so no scope for trying on in shops.

Help me, wise women!

Tracybath - makes sense but quite a faff.

WikiFreak · 01/12/2010 16:38

well?

teenyweenytadpole · 01/12/2010 18:28

Can I just say that I have large norks and have tried those vests and I hate them, mine always rolls up and ends up under my bra with my muffin top hanging out. The only way round it is to tuck the vest into my capacious knickers which rather spoils the effect!

ChateauRouge · 01/12/2010 20:22

arf@ lungey bra- keep out of its way folks!

PfftTheMagicDragon · 02/12/2010 13:43

Well I bought the recommended vests - on first wearing I loved it - but tried to get a second wearing out of it and it has been much more prone to rolling up. I think I just need to allow one wear. Also, massive norks don't help, boobage takes up so much of the material, I think that they are shorter on me than they would be on someone else with more normal sized tits.

I do like how smooshed together and firm that I feel though.

I ordered the purple nighty top. I have also made an order for some jeans, nice ones, but they are delayed because of the fracking snow! I was hoping that I would have chance to try everything on properly and then maybe make a last minute dash for the black top, or change my mind altogether and go for something else.

Am taking a trip to Westfield when DH gets back from work tonight.

Agree that knitted dresses can be very unflattering. I'm slim and my black one is very unforgiving indeed tho the padded shoulders help.
Also find they show the crease the top of my tights make very obvious and most unattractive.

SmileyPeeple · 03/12/2010 09:29

I always used to have that problem with knitted or jersey dresses - clinging to that slight bulge at the top of your tights and that slight bulge under your bra - until I discovered Spanx tights.

Opaque tights that come all the way up to you bra line, stay there and smooth out all lines so no bulges at all, and hold your tummy in at the same time.

I love them they make all my dresses look so much better, and I've been wearing dresses all winter since this discovery.

They are expensive but worth it (also keep you nice and warm!) I've washed and wore mine constantly.

ladylush · 03/12/2010 19:07

I find that a slip helps with that thigh/buttock bulge

CDMforever · 04/12/2010 13:01

OOOH! Will look into Spanx, what a fab name!

Smileypeeple · 04/12/2010 13:21

Spanx do a whole range of control pants etc, but it's the tights you wantnfor under winter dresses, as you'd be wearing tights anyway and this get rid of the tights/bra bulge.

Honestly if you a lot of dresses in the winter buy these.

They are pricey £30, but last year one pair lasted me the entire winter with washing and wearing nearly every day.

This year ive bought two pairs.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 09/12/2010 13:59

so with Spanx tights - they go up to your bra?

How good are they at actully staying up?
