The ins and outs of knitted dresses

This is my first ever post in S&B, and I am somewhat terrified by clothes/make up/all that jazz so go easy on me please!

I need something to wear on a night out. I think we can get away with jeans and A Nice Top, but I was thinking about a knitted dress with some patterned tights.

Thing is - I'm very much a scruffy bugger casual person, I wear jeans day to day with t-shirts or the occasional casual shirt. I don't know where to start. I can't even find a Nice Top.

What I want to know is: knitted dresses - what are the rules? Being a fatty size 18 with large breasts, is it stupid to even try one? Should certain shapes stay away from them?
I have to buy online so no scope for trying on in shops.

Help me, wise women!

The problem with wearing tunic tops with bootcut jeans is that you'll look like you're drowning in material -- hooge jeans flip-flopping around your legs, long swingy top billowing out... Tunics look nice when teamed with slim jeans, to balance them.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 29/11/2010 18:52

Beautiful - jersey is the fabric, yes? AM numpty.

I like the idea of a dress, but the thing is, and while I am always reading that you will wear them over and over, I never wear dresses. Ever. I feel so exposed. Which I suppose is why I went towards the knitted dress as it seemed more comfortable, but I didn't bank on the cling factor.

Thank you for your help everyone.

and ffs DONT DO A WRAP DRSS

BEAUTlFUL · 29/11/2010 18:53

Jersey skims if it's cut right! Phase 8 do lovely, lovely jersey dresses, often cut in a lovely flatteing way that gives you a waist but doesn't cling to any gunt. Smile

MayorNaze · 29/11/2010 18:53

i am sure the purple top would work fine over other types of jeans, i am only biased as i only possess skinnies or the complete opposite Grin

and just to totally play devils advocate and answer your OP, i like jersey and knitted dresses. in fact, i love them :)

MayorNaze · 29/11/2010 18:54

i was just about to continue on to say that i have a phase 8 one that is actually almost baggy, so def shop about if, like some paranoid people Wink, you fear cling-age Grin

BEAUTlFUL · 29/11/2010 18:55

Wiki, what would you suggest? A billowing tunic and a long-line cardigan? Sexay!

Size 18 isn't huge - you could look great in a wrap jersey dress. At least it would show off your figure without adding acres of extra material.

I really think hooge boobs in a tunic top will just look like... like... like Jo Brand.

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 18:56

thast why I am your FRIEND
you wont feel comfy if way out of zone
do jeans

ok these type if not slimmer gap jeans

teh sequin vest

NOT those green kermit shoes oyu want some with a platform - they dont feel high at all
these will do fine - boring and plain and oyu will have PLENTY of use out of them

dexter73 · 29/11/2010 18:56

I wear a slip under jersey dresses and then they skim not cling!

ThatVikRinA22 · 29/11/2010 18:56

loved that last phase 8 dress here...but am neither a size 8 nor an 18, which is all they have left.

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 18:57

i think that wrap dresses are dull.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 29/11/2010 18:58

I think we have things wrong. I'm not really wanting to update my whole wardrobe - I am not a wrap dresses woman. I wish that I was tbh. I like jeans and Converse and band t-shirts with a long sleeved top underneath. It's just who I am. I've tried to do the smart thing before, it just feels wrong on me.

I don't know anything about Primark 2008...is that something that people would think it I wore that top? I have to say I prefer the purple DP one.

Mayor - I shall look at GAP for the jeans, can you buy online yet for them? Will rethink the jeans if slim is acceptable.

Don't think I can get away with green shoes and purple top though. Can anyone find some other shoes - not too high, no higher than the green and a cardy?

ooh like the platforms. but in an INTERESTING colour please Hmm

having said that i bought these the other week and they are v v g :)

flingingflangin · 29/11/2010 18:58

Maybe nice dress then, not wrap too booby!! In a kind of splits the boys up and sometimes looks funny!
Yes skinny jeans or straight ones. Bootleg will make you look bulkier, they are for short people and make you look wider all round!! You'll look fab!

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 18:59

i have boobs
anything wrap makes me feel like i have cone tits
i meant these shoes

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 18:59

my most useful shoes are some leopard heels atm
are mary jane but shove the strap inside

they are my stalkwart night out shoes

MayorNaze · 29/11/2010 19:00

no-one except me would think primarni 2008 if you wore stars. and tbh i wouldn't think that if anyone else except me were wearing it Grin

but then you are talking with a person who most certainly would wear green shoes and a purple top Wink

i'm not helping at all am i? Blush

PfftTheMagicDragon · 29/11/2010 19:00

Beautiful, that is my worry with tunics, that my breasts will make things rather matronly.

flingingflangin · 29/11/2010 19:00

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 19:00

MayorNaze · 29/11/2010 19:01

reminds me of being 7 and pretending i had slip on school shoes...

flingingflangin · 29/11/2010 19:02

Wiki love those shoes too! I can feel an outfit coming together...

PfftTheMagicDragon · 29/11/2010 19:02
