The ins and outs of knitted dresses

This is my first ever post in S&B, and I am somewhat terrified by clothes/make up/all that jazz so go easy on me please!

I need something to wear on a night out. I think we can get away with jeans and A Nice Top, but I was thinking about a knitted dress with some patterned tights.

Thing is - I'm very much a scruffy bugger casual person, I wear jeans day to day with t-shirts or the occasional casual shirt. I don't know where to start. I can't even find a Nice Top.

What I want to know is: knitted dresses - what are the rules? Being a fatty size 18 with large breasts, is it stupid to even try one? Should certain shapes stay away from them?
I have to buy online so no scope for trying on in shops.

Help me, wise women!

oh! Here it is - is this price range?

traceybath · 29/11/2010 19:38

OK have just skimmed but has anyone suggested janice with black opaques, shoeboots and a black jacet on top. Nice clutch and away you go.

moosemama · 29/11/2010 19:40

That's it Beautiful, that's just what it does. I reckon you could get away with a really fab pair of boots with it as well. Only downside is that it is a marl fabric rather than something glam, but that's not something that bothers me really.

It does skim, but if you were worried about any stray lumps or bumps, you could possibly invest in some light shapewear.

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 19:40

i like it.
she isnt sure about dresses
think stripes might be a bit too statementy

noddyholder · 29/11/2010 19:40

this with tight jeans and heels?

traceybath · 29/11/2010 19:41

Comes in plain navy too.

Draping is your friend - empire line risks everyone thinking your pregnant in my experience.

Wiki - where are your leopard heels from?

MayorNaze · 29/11/2010 19:41

no no no moosemama that is lady di circa 1980 and wiki you are channelling pat butcher, esp with your large earring thingWink

tracey - i love it. i think i actually want it...but nowhere to wear it :(

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 19:41

traceybath · 29/11/2010 19:42

Oh thats nice Noddy - like it with the pleather leggings but guessing that may be a step too far Smile

And what did you buy in Jane Norman and you know just be careful near any naked flames

BEAUTlFUL · 29/11/2010 19:42

Wiki, I love leopardprint but that top is nasty. She's not going to sit on a bus drinking Aftershock out of a paper bag, randomly shouting "Faaaa coff"

noddyholder · 29/11/2010 19:43

No I really like it though and think i'll look tomorrow.Have leather (fake) leggings like ones in pic

Cyb · 29/11/2010 19:43

wrap dresses are VERY middle aged, they were 'fashionable' when trinny and Suassanh first hit our screens, and how many years was that?

Wiki has linked to some good things here,.LOVE the platform shoes

SHe had HUUUUGE tits too so she knows of what she speaks

MayorNaze · 29/11/2010 19:44

oh noddy that is very good. draping v v forgiving :) amd comfy to boot. no need to worry about the post food/drink belly that WILL appear if you are wearing something tighter Grin

noddyholder · 29/11/2010 19:45

I bought the leggings in JN and a grey and white wrap cardi I was def the scruffiest bird they had ever seen The brighton one is so footballers wives but I liked a few things and the quality is good

moosemama · 29/11/2010 19:45

Oi! Watch who you're calling mumsy - I am mumsy of course, but that's beside the point. Wink

I don't think its particularly Lady Di either, although it is classic. Surely that's the whole point, classic clothes don't go out of style, out of fashion maybe, but never out of style.

Its not glam or glitzy, but it is a very flattering shape, can be worn for day and/or evening and dressed up or down as required.

Cyb · 29/11/2010 19:46

Nodders I like necklines lik ethat until you lean over and the cowl swings down and shows your embonpoint

noddyholder · 29/11/2010 19:46

the bravissimo dress is not for a party though

noddyholder · 29/11/2010 19:47

Ha ha cyb still waiting for my mum to summon me and then I will try and get to see you!me and my big knockers

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 19:48

lol at HUGGGGE

PfftTheMagicDragon · 29/11/2010 19:48

God you lot move fast!

Who linked that drapey Zara top? I quite like that. Prints and loud stripes are too "look at me" for me. Oh it was noddy with the top = that's nice. I could even make some of you sick and get those green shoes with a black top Grin

I did ponder Bravissimo clothes - I am sure that they would flatter my figure, that dress looks fine, but it's not me.

Lol at Wiki's huge tits Grin bet they aren't as big as mine

Look comes in navy too and bargain price.

MayorNaze · 29/11/2010 19:51

well whatever you do please get the green shoes. they are so very lovely

Cyb · 29/11/2010 19:51

oh nodders I will feel so inadequate!

PfftTheMagicDragon · 29/11/2010 19:51

I cannot afford to buy a pair of boots - that is going to add a huge chunk onto the outfit.

Cyb · 29/11/2010 19:52
