The ins and outs of knitted dresses

PfftTheMagicDragon · 29/11/2010 16:46

This is my first ever post in S&B, and I am somewhat terrified by clothes/make up/all that jazz so go easy on me please!

I need something to wear on a night out. I think we can get away with jeans and A Nice Top, but I was thinking about a knitted dress with some patterned tights.

Thing is - I'm very much a scruffy bugger casual person, I wear jeans day to day with t-shirts or the occasional casual shirt. I don't know where to start. I can't even find a Nice Top.

What I want to know is: knitted dresses - what are the rules? Being a fatty size 18 with large breasts, is it stupid to even try one? Should certain shapes stay away from them?
I have to buy online so no scope for trying on in shops.

Help me, wise women!

HONEST the platform ones are fine.
anyway
car to bar

how hot is the venue?

MayorNaze · 29/11/2010 19:03

who can wear wrap dresses then? i have no norks to speak of so always need to put some sort of "feature" necklace on if i wear a wrap dress. plus a v v padded bra :(

flingingflangin · 29/11/2010 19:04

Mayornaze...those are lush shoes! I like the platform sole makes it much easier to walk. OP your legs will be soooo long in those.

MayorNaze · 29/11/2010 19:04

i have to confess that i mince in a gok type manner rather than walk in those shoes Blush

but it is all worth it!

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 19:05

the average boobers
who think theirs are big

flingingflangin · 29/11/2010 19:06

I like a wrAp dress myself sometimes, but for me it's the constant checking that I haven't unwrapped Blush

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 19:06

like a Terrys chocolate orange?

MayorNaze · 29/11/2010 19:07

ha, i must be smarter than the average boober then...Grin

(sorry, brief yogi bear chanelling moment Confused)

flingingflangin · 29/11/2010 19:07

They are shoes that are really comfy...then you wear them sober and realise they are really not..

PfftTheMagicDragon · 29/11/2010 19:08

I need to walk, not mince. We are getting a cab, or I will drive and I will not be pissed so don't have to worry about that. Not sure about venue heat but I hate to be over warm, so would want light weight knit on top that I can keep on.

Yep! All tied in underneath then belt actually untied and flapping open. I has happened to me, at work Blush and I still wake up sweating about it.

IDontLikeDisciples · 29/11/2010 19:12

There's nothing worse than a larger woman in a token 'sparkly top'

ffs, get yourself a well fitting dress and boots and flaunt your figure.

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 19:13

but you wear a dress and boots to work!

noddyholder · 29/11/2010 19:15

I am quite busty and can just about do knitted dress with good cut and v good bra plus girdle effect tights and heels! What abiout black slim trousers and a batwing top with heels and i have found big earrings and no becklaces minimises boobiness.I have those autograph platforms and they are high but comfy if you are ok with heels.

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 19:16

ah NODDY
hello at last.
yes batwing good and forgiving
are your legs good?

noddyholder · 29/11/2010 19:18

hello have not been on s and b much since i went to jane norman too ashamed Grin

TragicallyHip · 29/11/2010 19:19

I think you should wear the purple tunic, slim jeans and a grey boyfriend cardigan.

The peeptoes are lush but if they are too high then maybe have a look for similar style but lower heel

HTH Smile

PfftTheMagicDragon · 29/11/2010 19:26

Thank you, Tragically Hip - I like grey and purple together. I like your overall idea actually.

Hello NOddy Smile

Batwing tops - I have no experience of this. What are they and what are the benefits?

Wiki - nothing is good. I would begrudgingly show off legs (nothing shorter than around the knee) in opaque tights. With the right skirt or dress. But not all down the leg skin tight leggings/jeggings

My worst areas I would say are my upper arms and tummy.

Hi, sounds like we have a similar sort of figure. I really struggle to find things that don't look matronly because of my norks, but I have just been given www.bravissimo.com/products/clothing/dresses-and-skirts/bravissimo/la07-details.aspx?ck=K%2f%2bibL3vZIE%3d this Bravissimo dress]] by my Mum for Christmas and its lovely. AND its purple too! Grin

I love the sleeves on it as well (I hate my arms).

moosemama · 29/11/2010 19:32

Doh! I'll try that link again shall I? Blush

here

MayorNaze · 29/11/2010 19:32

oh you will love batwings if you do not love your upper arms :) is nice and flappy and covering yet not restrictive all at the same time :)

am sure someone much better than me will ping you a link any time now...

MayorNaze · 29/11/2010 19:33

also anything empire line will skim tum :)

moosemama · 29/11/2010 19:35

In my experience, batwing tops tend to 'widen' people who have large chests. But then again, maybe that's just me?

BEAUTlFUL · 29/11/2010 19:35

Now we're talking! That dress you linked to, moosemama, is exactly the type of thing I meant. That's FAB, classic, will give a waist and then just go "La-la-la, I can't see you," over tummy bulges, etc.

WikiFreak · 29/11/2010 19:36

and is mumsy and dull

she isnt going to a PTA meeting.
right this looks hite on screen but i think with some big hoops ( ? me and noddy) and jeans as suggested on the site and the heels you are not only covering your arms but "on trend"
