Can we just have one thread in anticipation of autumn/winter? No, we don't all want a Boden coat because a. they're not properly waterproof and b. EVERY other bugger in the playground has one already. So, I'm after technically sophisticated properly waterproof coats that GO IN AT THE WAIST that are somewhere in between hiker and fashion victim. Inevitably, this means EXPENSIVE usually I'm afraid. Some suggestions below. If you would like to add yours, especially cheaper ones, feel free:

Marmot highlander Marmot do some excellent longer waterproof jackets but unfortunately I cannot find lots of stockists in UK

Barbour are doing some nice coats these days [hit view all to see full range]

And even some of their wax jackets are wearable!

Now look here High Fash-hags Creenstone, a dutch company, do some very INTERESTING coats, apparently waterproof and technical... but difficult to find UK stockists or prices: can anyone track 'em down?

Ooh Seasalt has loads of lovely coats!

Seasalt does have lots of lovely coats but be careful you don't get burned with the returns charges like I did :/ I've been trawling Jack Wolfskin online today and like a look of a few of theirs - need to brave a trip to Cotswolds in town I think and try some on...

I got a Seasalt Snowdrop coat in turmeric at the weekend and love it! It covers my bum as I'm only 5ft3. Feels really snuggly due to the fluffy lining in the back/hood area and the hood is a good size - fits me even with my hair up on a bun.

This is a mine of information. Thank you all for the top tips. This is the year I WILL finally be warm and dry. Liking the look of the Seasalt and the ever tempting Didriksons.

John Lewis sell Seasalt clothes so I found it very useful to go in there to try some styles on, as I don't want to end up with big return charges as I am very long of arm. I have a Merrell Wakefield (Ellenwood) and the sleeves are just right on that for me but I want a thinner mac for shopping. I am interested in the Target dry coats, does anyone know how they come up in sleeve length.

Im 5 ft 8 and a small 12. I'm lean but quite a broad frame if that makes sense!

I tried the 10 as I heard (some bloggers have said this) they came up large but i felt it looked pinched around shoulders and when I stretched my arms forward to pick something up, they looked short.

Just standing there it looked fine. Id say they were good enough/passable, not a great fit for long arms but wouldn't look odd. I kept the 12 and i have room for a micro weight fleece and a long sleeve jersey top.

Arms fit me better in 12 as I dont fill it out as well as I did in the 10.

The green one is a lovely rich moss green. Not quite forest green and def. not a khaki green. DH jokes that Im "mad fer it" as he thinks it looks like an Oasis singer coat. I love it though.

Thanks deraila, I did wonder also about the size as a lot of the reviews say they come up big, I'm a small 14 with big frame, so looks like my normal size 14 would be right, also in a bit bigger size as you say there is the extra arm space.

They do seem a very reasonable price and have got mainly good reviews, which one did you get, i'm looking at the longer mac type ones as i have got a warm Merrell wakefield and want a thinner mac that looks a bit different from the Merrell one.

deraila - may I ask how the Georgia fits around the hips?

i'm quite broad shoulders and no bust to speak of. 10 or small 12 jeans. Maybe Im triangle shaped, lol!

i found the georgia in a 12 quite generous on hips but i think best for me when I'd be sitting in the car or sitting on a park bench.

You can draw the waist and bottom hem to hug around your butt a bit more.

For my shape, honestly, its not the ultimate fit but the best of what Ive tried so far.

Quire generous on hips = good for this zebra ! I have no bust either, but unfortunately I don't have much in the way of shoulders. Er, yay for pears!

Well, after a lot of dithering about if it would fit, I ordered the Aintree in the blush. SCHOOLGATE15 still worked, thanks deraila. i ordered the 14 because I thought at worse it will be a bit big, which doesn't really matter too much in a raincoat, better than too tight.

Just ordered Targetdry Georgia in Purple Jewel (code worked too so thanks!). Ordered in size 10, will let folks know how it fits. I'm a short arse so will probably be ankle length on me

So my Jack Wolfskin arrived. I'm delighted! It's lovely on and a definite keeper. The colour is fab, the fabric is soft and supple with lovely fleecy lining on the pockets and collar. Pockets are perfectly placed to the front and the length is perfect for a short-arse (5ft2) as it comes just to my knee. Sizing is spot on, EU Sm/UK10 is just right for me. The fit is nicely slim, and the toggles to tighten the waist are hidden in the pockets. The hood is good and big but adjustable on toggles to make sure it stays put. Hood is detatchable but sits well when not in use.

I'm almost looking forward to tomorrow's forecast torrential rain to check it out properly!

Fruit, which Jack Wolfskin is this? I have tried on no less than 10 different waterproof coats in Cotswold Outdoors this morning in record time while small was at preschool! I am in love with a few Jack Wolfskin as they seem to be so flattering to a more petite figure, despite being seriously cosy/ proper weatherproof coats :) Faves are either the Vernon (the 3-in-1 thing is seriously practical for our English climate) or the longer length 5th Avenue (soooo snug!). Just dithering now on adding another option to the mix (the Corner Brook Parka - liking the furry hood!) before making a final decision and flogging a few bits on eBay to justify the increase in winter coat budget ;)
