WATERPROOF bum-covering COATS: I am doing the research so you don't have to...

Can we just have one thread in anticipation of autumn/winter? No, we don't all want a Boden coat because a. they're not properly waterproof and b. EVERY other bugger in the playground has one already. So, I'm after technically sophisticated properly waterproof coats that GO IN AT THE WAIST that are somewhere in between hiker and fashion victim. Inevitably, this means EXPENSIVE usually I'm afraid. Some suggestions below. If you would like to add yours, especially cheaper ones, feel free:

Northface Stella Grace Good good good

Marmot highlander Marmot do some excellent longer waterproof jackets but unfortunately I cannot find lots of stockists in UK

Barbour are doing some nice coats these days [hit view all to see full range]

And even some of their wax jackets are wearable!

Now look here High Fash-hags Creenstone, a dutch company, do some very INTERESTING coats, apparently waterproof and technical... but difficult to find UK stockists or prices: can anyone track 'em down?

That's enough for now. will post more later. Please add suggestions but only ACTUAL waterproof coats please.

I finally got my Jack Wolfskin out in some rain today! It wasn't terribly heavy and I was just doing the daycare run, but the water beaded on the surface and there was no sign of it sinking in. I was easily able to shake it off when I got in. Very glad I bought this one, thanks for all the advice and reviews, ladies!

I bought a Jack Murphy coat (like one of those Aussie drover coats - if that is what they are called). It is said to be waterproof but...I tried it for first time some Thursday ago when it was torrential. I noticed when I took it off I had a damp back and arms.

Not sure if water got in or it was sweat trying to get out. Although the coat has a lining I am wondering if it is a 'boil in the bag' situation. I have tried the coat twice now and still get dampness. My aunt has told me to waterproof it with a spray. It may be because I was nfamiliar with all the stuff on it - like typing up the sleeve holes at the bottom and zipping it right up to my chin - which I did eventually even though I hate that sort of thing.

I dunno really...

I tried on a North Face Artic Parka yesterday. Was at a North Face Outlet, it was reduced to £200. Still far too ££ for me but bloody lovely

That' NOrth face riverdale one is nice because it's smart enough to wear to work or over a dress.

Blacks have some Didriksons. Our local one is small so didn't have them all.

Wore my Target Dry Georgia for the first time today after holding off for a while as I've had it sitting in my wardrobe for a month now debating whether to keep.it or not and now the return date as passed. It feels different from the wax/cotton style parkas I had before...this is more stiff and does have the rustling noise others have mentioned..I think I will keep this for windy/rainy days and maybe get a wax parka for day to day wear.

Can I ask, which shops stock Didriksons (to try on)?

I have answered my question with this North Face coat, but it is too munch money. If only it was £90 cheaper. Next have it in a black-green colourway which I am not a fan of.

Help me!

I am 5'4", size 14, 32F boobs, chunky of bum and thigh.

I need a coat that-

  • Doesn't have a furry hood
  • Has a proper waist, not A shaped or with a crap built in draw string waist
  • Is dark grey or even a deep cool purple or wine colour, black at a push
  • Has silver hardware (no brass or gold).
  • Is medium warmth and showerproof (doesn't have to be 100% waterproof)
  • Has elasticated cuffs

I went into a local shop that sells Joules, Seasalt, Didrikson and Jack Wolfskin and could barely find anything to try on. It all had furry hoods, was shapeless or gold.

I tried on the Didrikson Mary today, it's gorgeous. Very snuggly with long arms, hooray! Just wondering if all the Didrikson coats are so padded and warm though, as I wanted it for walking to work but think i might bake in it. What are the alternatives (still Didrikson, same longer length)?

Can anyone recommend a good coat for gardening?
Would need it to allow me to move around and to cover my bum.
Windproof would be good too.
Have tried a few but nothing right so far.
Thanks...

I'm 5ft6, 16 at the moment (usually large 14) with 34J whoppers due to breastfeeding. I've tried Didriksons Taylor, Seasalt Snowdrop and Fernstar. All wrong.

I've ended up with a Didriksons Angelina in a 42 which fits my hips much better than the Taylor which was too tight and is fine over my boobs.

And it's lovely and toasty without being too hefty. Definitely one to try.

Me too, MyGast - walked to hairdressers in driving rain & gusty winds wearing my Georgia, & was totally dry (above the knee, anyway) & much warmer than I was expecting.

The hood's not perfect for me - when I adjust it so it's not over my eyes it seems to come in closer to my head at the sides - but that's not a major issue. It has flattened my hair, too, but I think the hairdresser had made it look a bit flat anyway!

I've ordered the Jack Wolfskin as well for a second warmer coat, given that the Georgia was such good value. Am hoping it will be a flattering fit & that the absence of a furry hood (I do really love furry hoods as my face is so sensitive to cold winds) won't be too much of a problem.

Well I got to test out my Georgia today thanks to hurricane Gonzales. Stayed dry & toasty warm so I'm happy. Didn't have chance to adjust it exactly but will sort it soon.

Thanks to whoever posted the 15% code for Target Dry - my khaki Georgia arrived today and for £63 I'm really pleased with it. It's not perfect - I'm 5'3" and it's a little long in the sleeves (but being a short arse I'm used to that!) I'm a 12-14 and went for the 14 as I have massive boobs, think the 12 would have been a nicer fit, but keeping the 14 as not sure the 12 would accommodate my 34GG's! I really only something that was waterproof and more stylish than an anorak, as I'll only be wearing it in the rain and for getting muddy with the DC, so this fits the bill perfectly.

Or even wear it with!

If you can get hold of one, Seasalt of Cornwall's Kellifray mac could fit the bill. Haven't felt frumpy in mine. Guess it depends what you where it with:-)

Maple, have you looked at Jack Wolfskin as you are more petite? I found the length of their coats so much better and they are totally waterproof, there are some that have a 3-in-1 option so you can take the warm layer in/out for our changing weather etc. I'm just raising funds and torn between a few of theirs if you see my previous message on here...

just to add in, Sports Direct won't refund you in store either, they told me their policy is only t offer gift cards or you pay the shipping yourself to send it back to the warehouse and then that's the only way to have a proper refund..not worth the hassle from my experience!

Right, I've ordered the Wolfskin Iceguard. I'm a 6-8 but ordered S rather than XS as I want to be able to to fit lots of layers under it if we have another really freezing winter. I will report when I get it (but feel very hopeful following Fruit's good experience)..

I wouldn't touch Sports Direct with a bargepole. They don't reveal when stuff's out of stock on their website either - they grab all your information and send you daily spam, and then you eventually get a not-very-apologetic message saying that the thing you wanted isn't in stock after all. I've had that happen twice.

Shame, Maple- think didrikson for lanky lasses, am loving my Taylor! No Spring chicken, but first time in my adult life I've had a properly-fitting (lomg enough) coat. If i were your height, i'd revel in being able to go up amd down the high street with free choice
