Can we just have one thread in anticipation of autumn/winter? No, we don't all want a Boden coat because a. they're not properly waterproof and b. EVERY other bugger in the playground has one already. So, I'm after technically sophisticated properly waterproof coats that GO IN AT THE WAIST that are somewhere in between hiker and fashion victim. Inevitably, this means EXPENSIVE usually I'm afraid. Some suggestions below. If you would like to add yours, especially cheaper ones, feel free:

Marmot highlander Marmot do some excellent longer waterproof jackets but unfortunately I cannot find lots of stockists in UK

Barbour are doing some nice coats these days [hit view all to see full range]

And even some of their wax jackets are wearable!

Now look here High Fash-hags Creenstone, a dutch company, do some very INTERESTING coats, apparently waterproof and technical... but difficult to find UK stockists or prices: can anyone track 'em down?

Feedback - positives: Very warm, but breathable, so I survived a packed rush hour tube without overheating and fainting! Definitely waterproof! I am a size 16 and got the 42 - i possibly could have got the 40, but like to be able to wear over big jumpers. The hood is huge, but can be adjusted quite a lot, and has a stiff peak, which is fab cos I wear glasses and it helps keep the rain off them.
Lovely big pockets all over the place - the main front outer pockets have reinforced poppers, so are easy to undo and do up with thick gloves on. It has a very practical adjustable 'belt' at the back, so you can pull it in and make sure it's not too sack like! It reaches a fraction above my knees - I am 5'5".

negatives - Quite heavy, and the sleeves are very long - obviously aimed at the Scandi long-limbed market!

all in all I love it to bits - it does exactly what I want and love the colour too. I got it from Laws of Kirkcudbright - ordered online on a Saturday and arrived on Tuesday, and it was £120 - cheaper than elsewhere.

I found one!!! The Marmot Chelsea Coat.. It's a long parker style, fitted, flattering, lightweight, slimline, 650 fill & waterproof! It is soft touch (not crunchy) quilt lined & has a longer fleece inner cuff (ideal for us long limbed ladies for which The North Face fall short) I have just sent back the NF Arctic Parker & skipped out of blacks in my Marmot. One happy (& toasty) bunny!

OMG I loved this thread!! I bought the the insulated Wskefield and normal one think dc2 was about 7/8 months he's 4!! I wore them to death and sold them both last autumn as after dc3 arrived last April needed something smaller at last . Will keep looking for more recommendations!! I 'm now wearing Barbour artic parka for wet/freezing, lightweight fir spring and hooded wax for everything else. Don't need more than 3 coats yet still here I am

Well, you are too bloody late for me! Since last year I have been trying to find a waterproof coat/jacket tht covered my bum. Most had fur collars (not for me-gets my neck sweaty), or made me look like the michelin man. I got one of those Aussie coats in the end, and one of those quilted jackets, unfortunately it has a fur collar but it was only £1 in a charity shop.

Searching google for best waterproofs sent me to this long conversation on mumsnet, where I spent an evening taking in so much info - and today bought my first waterproof jacket since my teens, a Berghaus Goretex. So thank you all for so much wisdom and so many suggestions. Stay dry!

I ordered the merrell ellenwood from amazon and it arrived today, I expected so much from it but it doesn't sit right, looks frumpy on me as the shoulder area is a bit big even though it seems to fit fine elsewhere...I ordered a small and am a size 10...will wait to hear what others suggest as this one is going back

Yazzy, thanks for posting that about the ellenwood. I've been on the verge of buying it for months but couldn't justify the £180 for the teal one on Amazon. Winter has hit with a bang here and I'm freezing, so just ordered this instead. Fingers crossed it's what I want!

Fruit that looks very cosy and warm. I am tempted to order it too, let us know how it is in person once you recieve it. Amazon is good with returns so I am thinking to order two sizes next time.

Will do. The nice computer in Amazon is telling me I'll have it next weds/Thursday. I'm a little concerned that it'll be a bit shapeless, but the choice of down free insulated coats is miserable so I hope it's nice and that the small fits.

I've got that Wolfskin coat!! It's great, I love it. Pockets are fleece lined, hood fully adjustable and I swear with heeled boots, worn undone as I stride through the shops, it looks quite sexy.

I didn't like the Merrell ones, found them stiff and uncomfy. The Wolfskin is soft and v v comfy.

I'm sorely tempted by that Wolfskin one! I had a Merrell the winter before last and didn't like it at all - chafed my neck and was the wrong shape. I gave it to a charity shop in the end. Last winter I got away without having a properly warm, waterproof coat, but I don't suppose we'll have another winter as mild as last year's.

I've just bought the Didriksons Angelina. It's gorgeous (if parkas can be gorgeous). I am looking forward to many early morning dog walks in the cold and rain in my lovely new coat.

It sizes up large so went down from my usual size and it fits well, still with space for a sweater underneath

I have a Didriksons Thelma, which I bought last year. I can't wait to put it on, it's SO good. Lovely and cosy warm (I am the coldest person on the planet) and seriously seriously waterproof. You can take off the furry bit on the hood. Fit is also quite slim / adjustable with a hidden drawstring on the inside, which is good as I am as skinny as a rake.
