Yes, and so unlucky with the brilliant lob onto the cross-bar, too.

Oooh, watching the replays now of Agyemang's goal - I didn't appreciate how technically good it was (think it went through both a defender and the keeper's legs, too). Wonderful composure and placement under pressure in a packed box. Superb!

And how articulate was she in her interview? She will definitely be a pundit once her career is over ( unless the BBC think that she is too well spoken which they might well do).

Edited

That interview was lovely.

Do you think she will be a starter for Arsenal?

I'm not sure as Renee is quite cautious so I think she will come on as a sub.

I'm wondering if we needed to sign Olivia Smith and whether we would have done so after this.

Snowypeaks · 23/07/2025 01:06

Not a lot more to add. Either this means that the trophy has England's name on it, or the Lionesses have used up all their luck.
The Arsenal trio did it again, but SW can't keep leaving it to them to stage a comeback. Changes far too late, kitchen sink stuff. Plan A wasn't working. Italy were dealing with us competently, looking dangerous when they broke and defending like lions. I couldn't stand them as a team last Euros/world cup - I forget which - but I have grown to respect their football and team spirit this time around. Girelli is a fantastic player and their talisman. Her being forced off was huge.

Regarding Olivia Smith, remember she's playing as a winger, whereas Michelle is very much a centre forward. Plus you can never have too many brilliant forwards, I always say!
I still think that the best next step for Michelle would be to go back on loan, even if it's just for half the season. Nikita Parris has left Brighton so that might be a seamless transition. I was even thinking abroad - Italy - would be better for her. She needs to get away from the hype and attention and concentrate on perfecting her already remarkably mature game. Starting matches is essential, coming up against excellent defenders who know every trick.
The worst thing would be to turn her into a supersub, so if Renée Slegers doesn't think MA will realistically compete with Russo for a starting spot, I hope she sends her on loan.

@MustTryHarderAndHarder
Actually, thinking about it, Italy is where Rosa Kafaji needs to go on loan...

Yes, I was wondering about her, she started off so well. But why do you think she and Michelle should go to Italy? It is bc Italian club football is low key or do they need to learn time wasting?

Didn't realise Olivia Smith was a winger.

Snowypeaks · 23/07/2025 12:26

With Michelle, I was thinking about learning from Girelli at Juventus - in particular because she is such a good back-to-goal striker. Italy defended really stoutly - excellent positioning, not just last-ditch heroics. It would help Michelle to test herself against really disciplined back lines and teams who pack the box - this is something AWFC face often - no space in behind. The time-wasting is infuriating but learning how to deal with "dark arts" and knowing how to employ them if necessary is essential. Beth Mead is brilliant at winning free kicks.
For Rosa Kafaji, team structure, ball retention and recovery, using her teammates are areas she has to improve - she has so much raw talent and wizardry but tries to win games on her own and loses the ball way too much. I see Italy as "pound shop Spain" in some ways and Mariona is a great model for Kafaji. A Frauen-Bundesliga club would be good, too, but the standard might be too high for them to break into a top team.
I'm just musing, of course.

You're not wrong about Olivia Smith - she is a striker but is used as a winger.

CrossPurposes · 23/07/2025 12:32

Re time wasting - I don't think many fans were complaining 3 years ago - www.nytimes.com/athletic/3465406/2022/08/01/england-time-wasting-euro-2022/

DuncinToffee · 23/07/2025 12:36

Nobody really complains about time wasting when it's their team, same with drawing fouls, VAR etc.

It's the nature of us fickle fans Grin

@DuncinToffee and @CrossPurposes
Yes, indeed! 😂
And after we scored in extra time the roles were suddenly instantly reversed!

DuncinToffee · 23/07/2025 20:23

Good save AKB

Ooh so close, Spain hit the post

OP posts:
burblish · 23/07/2025 21:23

I don't fancy facing either of these teams in the final: Spain have so much talent all over the pitch and Germany have such steely determination. I would prefer England to face Germany, but getting past AK Berger is no mean feat, as Spain are discovering!

DuncinToffee · 23/07/2025 21:32

Yes, can't call this game.

Spain are great to watch but they are not really hurting Germany.

OP posts:
duc748 · 23/07/2025 21:36

Only a matter of time, surely? Spain are all over them.

DuncinToffee · 23/07/2025 21:41

Nearly Germany

OP posts:
burblish · 23/07/2025 21:41

Oooh, that was so close for Germany - great free kick.

burblish · 23/07/2025 21:50

OMG, what a save from the Spanish keeper! How did Germany not score then?!

DuncinToffee · 23/07/2025 21:51

I thought that one was going in, great save

Good. And they have a day less than us.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 23/07/2025 21:53

Good. And they have a day less than us.

That's exactly what I was thinking! We need all the help we can get against either of these teams! 😆

DuncinToffee · 23/07/2025 22:01

I am not sure if that makes any difference to Germany

OP posts:
burblish · 23/07/2025 22:05

@DuncinToffee I think you're probably right - the way they played full throttle against France for 120 mins with the early sending off was unbelievable. And despite all the knocks they took in that game, they're chasing down everything again today.
