Patri would have been my pick.

It's always hard to pick just one. Sweden are out, but Kosovare Asllani was incredible. So as long as the Best Player award goes to one of several standout players, I'm not fussed. I'm sure Bonmati would rather have got her mitts on the big glass thingammybob anyway!

Battlers, yes but I am still low-key annoyed with Sarina for the super-late subs in previous matches and today starting a half-fit LJ instead of Kelly, who made a difference immediately. It all worked out in the end but I had to get that off my chest!

Yes I agree that SW was fortunate to get away with so many late subs.

It's not a complete injustice to give it to Aitana. I just thougt there were quite a few better players. She might be the best player over all, but i didnt feel like she had a great tournament. But these are obviously opinions 😀

Tbh, I think the individual awards are a bit pointless - even the Golden Boot.

Obviously, I am completely in favour of the Best Young Player of the Tournament award, since Arsenal's Michelle Agyemang won it! 😁

TizerorFizz · 27/07/2025 23:39

We played an amazing defensive game and Jess Carter greatly improved. Ian Wright did a decent summary on itv though and I think the tweet about England leading in games is spot on. Most people who want to win the World Cup would be worried about this. We have got lucky twice because other teams cannot score penalties.

DH and me are wondering why this is. Why are so many saved? There’s a definite need to improve this element of the game and most teams seem poor. I have a very good idea where the ball is going so the goalkeepers must know. Too many are too low, at a saveable height and telegraphed. Studying Harry Kane might help.

I actually agree. I hate when someone doing a team sport get the "sports moment of the year" award for scoring a goal etc. Usually many people have done somthing good for you to be able to finish. So yeah, I don't like best player for team sports. If we are doing a golden boot then we should do most assists and most balls blocked. Same with the goalie awards. It all depends on your defensive line up.

Maybe they did study Kane. World Cup 2022 version. Well, they at least got it on target 😀

This tournament was an outlier for pk's. Scoring % was 58.5% where as last euros it was 80%. 2017 it was 88%.

If we want to make a gender comparison, in womens tournaments average success rate is 72.99% and in mens it is 70.56%. Harry Kane's success rate is 88%, Georgia Stanways it is 87%. Mariona who missed today has an 85%. So I wouldn't necessarily draw too many conclusions based on this tournament.

@RewisSo that’s 3 years ago. If you watch HK regularly, he’s not missing many! I think overall, men’s goalkeeping is much much stronger and far greater depth. Poor scoring from penalties seems to become an issue when goalkeeping is better. The shots lack power and direction. No top corner shots at all. And HK takes waaay more penalties in a season. He plays more (well did before going to Germany).

It was a joke about HK misisng penalty. My main point was that, I just don't see the necessity to make this about men vs women. HK is a good penalty taker. There are quite a few of those and would be beneficial to look at others. Men and women. Always good to learn in general. But this tournament was on outlier when it came to pks. International or national level so thia isn’t a fundamental problem yet thay needs to fixed.

DuncinToffee · 28/07/2025 08:41

Just stop comparing it to the men's game.

It's only foottball where this is still done

Why can we not talk about one game? It’s not two separate sports! Both are under FA, same rules and same everything!

Clearly our women (all women?) need to improve at taking penalties. I find it interesting that we have improved in so many areas, definitely goalkeeping, and it’s ludicrous to think the women don’t get inspiration from the best men! They are the most skillful at this game. It’s the same game. I always want England to win but it’s foolish to say it’s separate and we cannot learn from men!

If it’s not the same game, why dress like the men, have identical rules, have the same size pitch, have the same length of time on the pitch etc? Tennis doesn’t match exactly and the women are respected. Here, we do compare women's rugby, hockey, and in fact any team game played by each sex separately with identical rules. Football for men can offer a lot to women and learning from the best is never a waste of time. So yes, compare and contrast and it doesn’t make women’s sport less interesting. Just not as skillful.

DuncinToffee · 28/07/2025 09:21

Why dress like the men?

Hopefully this will change as there is evidence that women should play with different footwear, boots designed for females rather than based on male anatomy

DuncinToffee · 28/07/2025 09:34

Same size pitch, there have been plenty of discussion on that.

It would have restricted women's football even more if they had to play on different pitches or with different goals.

Banned for 50 years, only just starting to touch the edges of closing the gap.

I shared a link to the first women's football boot but MNHQ are checking it. Adidas.

That article says Nike has stopped making it. Boo, hiss!

DuncinToffee · 28/07/2025 10:21

Wasn't it Nike who didn't sell the goalkeepers shirt?

Just FYI the contentious link above is a netflix show about Arsenal women...

talks about women's injuries and research about it-

edited to add suspect someone at MNHQ is a Spurs fan 😂for blocking it for so long

MrsMitford3 · 29/07/2025 13:09

Was delighted to see the parade such a big thing-was so worried that it would be underwhelming at mid day on a tuesday.

All my 20 something DC said it's on at their work so they can see it.
It was very moving-admit to welling up watching.

Missed Katie McCabe's energy that we had after WCL final!!!

And Leah Williamson was wearing an Arsenal earring!! 😍
